I have been a loyal fan of ryobi string trimers for years, until my old one broke and I replaced it with this "new" model. This string trimmer cranks out the power... until you raise any dust, then it sputters and dies after a few sessions.
Ryobi has not included any air filter in these trimmers! They feel that their "filter screen" will prevent contaminants from reaching the engine. Unfortunately, they are dead wrong! I suppose if you are only trimming a grass yard they would work fine, but if you are trimming weeds or brush in a field you will raise dust and destroy the engine.
You can fabricate a filter out of a foam filter element they sell for mowers, or you can buy another brand of trimmer. I chose the latter!
No, I do not recommend this product.

I bought one of these and it did not run right, returned it and the second one ran awesome .. In any position i operate it in.. Good power and the line replacement is a breeze compared to the old poulan or homelite this is replacing.. You have to get the oil gas mix ratio right though.. And i also found using the 85mm line works well when you are going to hit things like fence's or concrete. Not quite as brittle as the heavier line they suggest.. overall it is a good trimmer
"Not a Echo but half the price" I also tried a Poulan Pro 33cc model but returned it because it weighed twice as much as this one and trust me it makes a difference.. Have not tried the attachments but plan on getting a cultivator in the future..Hope this is of some help to anyone who reads this..

Purchased this product about 5 years ago. I used it for two seasons and it sat with the same gas in it for three more years. A week ago i primed it and it started right up... any other I've owned took two hours to start with brand new gas. Definitely would recommend this to anyone.

I would not recommend this trimmer to anyone, I would not recommend the curved shat to any consumer either. The trimers ran fine, while they worked. I first bought the curved shaft 5 years ago, it functioned well for two years, then a spark plug went on it, simple problem right? Well following that it broke two more times before summer ended. I had a very similar problem with the straight shat, it ran well, but once it broke once, it was extremely prone to breaking again, if you are buying a trimmer i highly recommend buying an Eccho, it will last longer, and the extra $50 to $100 is well worth it. Hope this helps, thanks

I had high hopes for this trimmer since I own other ryobi products that have served me well. No t this one. First off, it was hard to start. It took many pulls to get it going. I fugured maybe it would get better once it was run for the first time. Once I had it running, I could not get it to idle. It ran at full throttle but would die when I released the trigger. Then, about 5 minutes into the job, it just stopped. I was able to restart it but it would run for only 10 to 15 seconds before stopping again.
I took it back and ended up getting the Ryobi 4 cycle version. It runs great.
No, I do not recommend this product.

i bought this trimmer early august and love it. i had a bolens, and still have a homelite trimmer. the attachment fits nice, im using the fixed spool with 105 string as it says you can on the fixed head. ive cut over a dozen yards and used 1inch of string. thats flipping it to edge as well.
some people complained about starting it, ive had no problems at all. if its warm, half choke and one pump on the primer. i dont squeeze any gas throttle starting any gas equipment, i think it makes it harder to start. i give it gas after it starts.
im a firm beleiver of using your equipment to its potential, not expecting more than its made for. this trimmer exceeds all my expectations, and i recommend it to anyone wanting a great machine at a cheap price.
i recommend it highly as i said, ill be getting attachment in the near future. kudos to home depot staff as well.
Yes, I recommend this product.

I have used this trimmer for one and a half seasons. Although the unit has been temper-mental upon starting from time to time, I have always been able to get it started. My frustration has been with the trimmer line feed. I frequently (every 4 or 5 minutes) have to stop the trimmer to disassemble the trimmer head and re-spool it. I have wasted far to much time using this poorly designed product.
No, I do not recommend this product.

Probebly the worst head design ive used. The string keeps going back into the head and you have to stop and take it apart to feed the string again. I have to do it an average of 5-10 times every time I use it. Its really too bad because it probebly would be a good trimmer otherwise. I plan on getting another trimmer soon, thats how much time I waste on re-feeding the head.
No, I do not recommend this product.

PRODUCT WORKED VERY GOOD FOR ABOUT 2 YEARS THEN PULL CORD WOULD NOT WIND BACK UP. IN ORDER TO FIX THE PRODUCT YOU HAVE TO TAKE COMPLETELY APART AND THE LAST SCREW MUST HAVE BEEN MADE OF LEAD B/C A QUARTER TURN ON IT STRIPED IT OUT. I HAD ALL OF THE ATTACHMENTS FOR IT SO I WAS STUCK WITH IT OR THE 4 STROKE CUBCADET. I WILL LET PEOPLE KNOW HOW THE CC WORKS OUT FOR ME. BUT DON'T WASTE MONEY ON THE RYOBI, SPEND A LITTLE MORE AND GET A BETTER PRODUCT. REDMAX OR STIHL

Won't start right out of box

Bought this trimmer, took it home, mixed up fresh batch of pre-mix using their oil and just purchased gas. Followed starting instructions exactly.Would not fire at all on the full choke mode. Coughed, but wouldn't start when switched to 1/2 choke mode. Could not get it to start at all.
Tried again the next weekend and it would not start then either, following starting instructions explicitly.
I've had 2 strokes all my life (over 40 years) and never had one I could not start at all.
Apparently some of these machines start OK, others won't run at all. I'm taking it back and would strongly advise against buying one.
No, I do not recommend this product.

I should have returned it.... but I got so fed up with fighting this machine, for what seemed like forever, just to start up that I smashed it to bits!! I was worn out before I began my trimming! Not to mention the mind numbing vibrations once I got it started! This is one of the worst investments I've made! I used it maybe 4 times and smashed it on the 5th! My wife thinks I'm crazy.....but it was me or it! I prevailed!!!

I have only used commercial weed trimmers in the past and this is a very good product. I was very skeptical about buying Ryobi but after using this product, I would recommend this to anyone that is looking for a less expensive unit for home. The two things that I would like to see change is the bump head be made with a little better plastic and the spring be recessed into the trimmer spool.
Yes, I recommend this product.

My teenaged daughter and son are the main users of this Ryobi. They both prefer its straight shaft over a curved one. Our trimmer starts up easily and does a thorough job whacking down weeds and grass, but sometimes when it shuts off it can be very hard to start up again. It doesn't do this every time, but often enough to create some frustration. Because its performance is excellent, I would love to give this gas-powered trimmer a higher rating, but the problems with restarting make it an average trimmer at most.
No, I do not recommend this product.

This is the biggest piece of junk I have ever owned. It is hard to string, the string it came with kept breaking off and I had to stop constantly and reset the string. The string bump feed system does not work. I can get it to either constantly feed string until I have over a foot of string hanging out, or set it so that no string comes out at all, even when bumped. So now I am constantly stopping to take the head apart and get more string out of it. It vibrates like crazy when you give it full throttle. Every time I get on the throttle, it is sluggish to respond and acts like it wants to stall. The only positive is that it is easy to start. Which is good because I am always having to stop it to restring it.
No, I do not recommend this product.

I agree with Bill (July 11,2011), he is exactly right. I have had 2 Ryobi trimmers before, each lasted 8 years and this one is just as good. Most of the problems I've read about in these reviews seems to deal with hard starts, especially hot. Sometimes they do, sometimes they don't. If they don't - half choke, 1 shot of primer, and it will fire on the first pull. As long as the starting instruction is followed, you won't ever have any problems. Also remember, the spool cap has LEFT HANDED threads on it , righty loosey. I think one other problem is improperly mixed fuel. This ratio is 50:1. which is 2.6 oz. per gallon and the correct type of 2 cycle oil must be used. Bill is right about the throttle action on this one being different which takes some getting used to. The head tends to dig in, especially in thick grass and scalping is the result, but learning the correct technique is all that's needed. Good machine at a reasonable price, I recommend this trimmer.
Yes, I recommend this product.

I just got this trinner last week and it wips weeds pretty well. I would not use it on tall weeds that have thick stalks, the motor is a little under powered for that.
I weed wacked for about a half an hour stright and used less than half a tank of gas. The gas tank is a little small, I thought that I would burn a tank in that period of time. I was surprised!
This is a good trimmer for home use and for mediun duty.
I also bought the hedge trimmer attachment and it works well with the 26cc power head.
Yes, I recommend this product.

I had a Ryobi previous to this that ran for 10 years and started every time. This model is a piece and I will not be buying their product again. After 1 year I pulled the cord to start it and the re-coil broke. Thus the cord would not rewind to start the motor. Starting it is another issue as it's not solid when you start it after its been warmed up. You kinda have to "guess" which throttle position it has to be in should it ever die on you. I liked Ryobi and maybe their other products are good but dont waste your money on this one.
