Good first chainsaw...

I first purchased the 16" Homelite model. A flimsy metal part that was part of the chain tensioner mechanism broke within 24 hours without ever being touched by me.
Be sure the "tip guard" at the end of the saw is very tightly secured. It seems to me that they come a bit loose from the factory.
To my delight, Home Depot allowed me to exchange it for the 18" and pay the difference for the slightly more expensive 18" model.
I would not consider the 16" model unless you are cutting light limbs or saplings. For an actual tree, the added power and bar size of the 18" is a must.
Plus: The engine starts very reliably.
It's simple to operate and has good safety features.
Minus: Homelite should rethink the location of the chain tension adjustment screw.
You will need to adjust the chain tension a few times as the chain expands both when its new and when it heats up in use.
The position of the screw is awkward.
Proper chain tension is essential to effective cutting.
I highly recommend reading the manual carefully before use, in the interest of safety.
For people new to using gas powered tools, another tip is make sure you don't use gas/oil mix older than a month either from the gas container or in the saw. Gas turns to a varnish like substance in time and will damage any gas powered tool.
If you are done using the saw and will be putting it away for a long period, be sure to run the saw until all the gas is burned off.

i have owned a craftmans saw for years. i receive tjis saw as a gift from my wife.
i have found the saw easier to start and the kick back feature has been some thing i found very useful, the easy adjustment is far better than the one on my old saw, which allowed the chain to jump off, i have not had my chain come off at all, it is lighter and more powerful and i have had less problem with the saw getting hung when cutting. the chain seems to stay sharper longer which i can not explain.

I've only owned this saw for about 2 weeks, and I've already taken down 6 dead trees in the swamp on the property. Quick and easy starting, fast cutting, and lightweight. Nice carrying case, easy adjustments.

This chainsaw was a good price and works well. No problems for the 6 months we've had it.
