"I buy this frig for all of my apartments. I own 180 apartments. This is a wonderful upgrade from the small ones that all my apartments had when we purchased them."

It Was Cheap,
November 1, 2009
By Peasant
from Alexandria, VA
"Like most everyone else, I bought this because it was the cheapest one I could find. While preparing to put my condo on the market, my refrigerator died. Money was already tight - hence selling the condo so I could not afford anything more. I found the same problems everyone else did. The wire shelves are a pain (literally, try not being careful putting a 2 litre soda bottle on the shelf and have it fall on your foot). The lack of a cover on the butter shelf is cheapness at it's worst. That's like he clothing store I heard about once that took off any belts from clothes they were unpacking and sold them separely. I did find one advantage to being ill. I have a chair in the kitchen for when I can't stand anymore and, because the unit is short, that is the only way to see into the refrigerator compartment - either that or stand way back.
Bottom line - it is what it is - an inexpensive refrigerator/freezer. It seems to be doing the job and it fills the hole in the kitchen when potential buyers come through. Frequently, they talk about replacing all of the appliances with stainless steel. Since all the appliances now work, I don't feel too bad about going with a minimum needs appliance prior to selling the condo."

"This came as a new appliance in a home I just purchased. I am giving it away to a friend who has a dead fridge right now and buying something larger and quieter with an ice maker. I would not have chosen this for myself - the only reason I have it is because it came with the house and the previous owner went the cheapest route on 'upgrades'. For a couple hundred more you can get something much nicer. You cant even put a 12 pack of soda on the bottom shelf because then the door won't close!"

Piece of junk,
July 30, 2009
By golfergal
"I bought this for my mother, who lives in an adjacent apartment in my home. THe height and width were perfect, but after 9 months of owning this unit, I am ready to purchase a different one. THe wire shelves are flimsy and although adjustable, they do not allow adjustment that makes any sense for basic foods. In order to store a 1/2 gallon of milk or a 2-liter bottle of soda, the shelves have to be set at a level that allows very little space on the other 2 shelves. And the lower shelf that has a drawer underneath has no "lock-in" ability, so every second time she uses it, it comes off track and the drawer is not usable. ANd the door does not allow enough room to store any of hte larger products, like milk or soda bottles. I am getting something different for her this week."

"July 28th 2009
In this day and age, it's very easy to get nothing for your money....
So, I was quite surprised at the quality and performance of my new in-expensive refrigerator. I am more than happy & pleased with my purchase.
I have two adult children in need of new appliances..I'll send them to HOME Depot!
Thank You!

"No door on butter holder and no shelf in freezer. These are pretty basic items you would expect with any fridge purchase. Wanted a new cheap fridge to tide us over until we could purchase top of the line. Good for the money and with free delivery."

Decent for the price,
July 14, 2009
By kfrat

"I needed a cheap fridge for my new apartment since my landlord didn't supply a fridge so I bought the cheapest I could get. The fridge is a decent, budget friendly fridge. It's not super noisy, but it isn't silent either. The only thing that annoys me is that the dairy compartment door and freezer shelf needs to be bought separately (about $55 for both plus shipping from GE) A la carte for the fridge I guess. All in all, its still cheaper than other alternatives."

Don't buy it,
July 9, 2009
By charmer
from Nashville, TN
"This looks great, but screechingly noisey from the freezer (as others are mentioning) and if my freezer is cold enough to keep ice cream, it freezes food in the refrigerator because the air is directed either up to the freezer or down, and the ONE control (they advertise controls) does not sort out the air flow properly for these areas. Right now I have it on number 5, and the refrigerator portion is fine. It does not always screech, so when a repair man from came to look at it, it was not screaming, and as I was keeping it at a temp only for the refrigerator, all I got was an explanation that it is a lower end appliance and without dual controls, this is what I get as far as controling which direction the air and temp. He said there had not been other complaints about a noisey freezer, so as mine was at that moment more quiet, it was nothing he knew to igo in and try to repair. I wound up buying an extended waranty they offered me, but after once again going to Home Depot and explaining my unhappiness, they are willing to take my refrigerator back and I will choose another one to replace this. If I could fine one that is not a GE, but still in my range of price, I would buy it!"

Good choice,

By DAS09

"Nice price with free delivery. It's the right size for my cottage. Not as quiet as I would like, but for the price I can live with a little noise. I would have liked to have the shelf in the freezer and the butter saver door. But, overall a good purchase."

I like this one,
July 1, 2009
By Foxmobo

"Very nice fridge, lots of room, very nice price. Exterior door is textured witch was a supprise. It does not come with ice maker, the option online is only for the installation cost. Fast professional delivery. The fridge is not silent but its not loud like other claimed. My computer makes more noise than it does. I highly recommend this for a budget fridge. You will not find anything this size quality for this price. And like the other reviewer mentioned it is a GE product."

Good buy,
June 25, 2009
By GaryIam

"It was delivered last week in time. I bought it for my mother's apartment. It's not silent but doesn't make much noise. Very good and simple refrigirator. I didn't find anything better for this price.
You don't have to order icemaker to install this product if you don't need or want one. If you live in apartment chek with your landlord before ordering the icemaker. Very often they do not allow to have it installed.
Be aware that this model does not include any shelfs for the freezer and the door (cover) for dairy compartment (located on the door). It would be nice if they indicate it in the product description.

Everything you need in a Frige,
June 23, 2009
By DomP

"Everything you need in a Frige, just no bells and whistles. I bought two of these for my properties. It's pretty bare-bones. It has holes to support both a freezer shelf and a butter dish cover, but they do not come with it."

Rose by any other name,
June 22, 2009
By Chilled
from Ridgewood, NJ
"Don't let the brand fool you, Americana is made by GE and is basically the same as the equivalent Hotpoint, but less expensive.
This basic model fits our needs: compact on the outside, lots of space on the inside. A no frills basic that does the job efficiently.
One glitch: the reversible door did not close properly when I tried to switch it around. Not sure why and the owners manual was not helpful.

O.K., but noisy,
June 20, 2009
By ptinfairfax
"It is quite noisy. We got it as an extra fridge for our laundry room, but I would not want to have it as a main one in the kitchen. It's operation is quite noisy, we don't have an ice maker installed, so it is not from water, it is just normal operation."

Good but Noisy,

"I purchased this refrigerator about 4 months ago. Works well in terms of cooling and freezing quickly. However, it is relatively noisy at times. These noises are ones I have never heard before. Almost seems possessed at times. If not for the noise, I would highly recommend it."
