This is by far the best trimmer / weed eater I have ever owned. Much more powerfull than other models, and it uses heavier duty line than all the lower end electric ones. Best one on the market, period.

This trimmer cuts through everything with ease. The power is incredible and the two cutting lines work great. I tried the battery operated trimmer and returned it after the batteries lasted ONLY 20 minutes each. The hassle of the cord is offset by the power.

Has good power but, string is always tangling when fed. It also will spit chunks of the string at your shins/ankles. I have several scars to prove it. There is a recall on this thru B&D, which I took advantage of. They send u anew spool, screws, and cover to install. I did this and it still spits.
Yes, I know I could wear long pants, but that's not the issue. Poor design and frustrating to use.

I had nothing but problems with this trimmer. It worked well at first, but not long into it's life the auto feeder started to feed at the slightest cutting resistance. This resulted in running through an entire spool of line in approx. 20 minutes. To keep from wasting line I had to reload just a little at a time.
Later, after about a year of use, the motor suddenly spun freely from the head. Upon inspection I found the infamous melted plastic gear. It was relatively functional yet, so I slipped the belt back on and went back to work, only to have the drive shaft shear off. Perhaps this was a side affect of the bad gear, but either way this was not a well designed piece of equipment and a waste of my money.
No, I do not recommend this product.

Have been happy with the trimmer. Tackled an overgrown yard that we moved into, and it handled it well. The string ran out, but I think its because of the amount of trimming I had to do to get the yard in decent order.

This trimmer is very esay to operate. However, when hold it for a while to complete my job, it is heavyer than I the first time I hold it. Also, with a cord you have to be extra care when you are working.

When the motor started spinning freely I thought the belt must have slipped off or at worst broke. Opened it up to find a melted plastic gear. Turns out you need to purchase a new motor to fix it ($50+shipping). I trashed it. I really wish I had read the reviews.

Same as most everyone here: the plastic gear melted down after 4 uses. Trashed. B and D should be ashamed. HD should not sell this junk. Consumer Reports is wrong. Reviews on this product at Lowes says the same thing. No more Black and Decker for me. Spend the money on quality.

Wish I had read the reviews before buying. Same story as many, Grasshog used lightly for trimming, couldnt have been more than 10times before it stopped spinning.
Took the thing apart to find the pully wheel melted. Thought I could get the pully wheel off only to find its a single piece no way to get it apart.
DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY!!!

After a few use, it stopped spinning, but the engine was working. The plastic pulley ended up melting.
Looked a replacement pulley. The motor and pulley is one piece (you have to get a new motor even if it's just the pulley the problem) costing over $50. Not worth to repair
Read on another site this is a common occurrence.
Black & Decker reputation is no longer what it used to be

used less than 10 times for an average sized yard.
slowly quit spinning the head of the trimmer but the motor ran fine. took it apart to find that there is a plastic pulley and a metal pulley. The plastic pulley ended up melting and ruining the belt.
Looked at the B&D site to get a replacement pulley. They only sell the motor and pulleys as one piece - $60.xx plus the belt and it will probably eat itself again.
Read on another site this is a common occurrence. Wish I would have read the reviews before I wasted my money.

This tool worked great the first few times I used it. After limited use one day I turned it on and the motor started but the rotor didn't spin. I took it apart to find a cheap plastic gear piece had completely melted down and the belt that turns the rotor had nothing to catch on. I then did some research online and found this was a very common occurrence with this Black & Decker product. This has left a very bad taste in my mouth with regards to B&D and I will avoid their products moving forward.

I really liked this trimmer at first, though it did eat line like crazy. My wife was trimming for the second season we have used this and the shaft broke. If you read the reviews you see that this has happened to many people. Turns out my neighbor has the identical trimmer and the identical failure. B&D said they would be happy to replace it BUT when they found out ours were 2 months out of warranty they said they wouldn't do anything. So, we are stuck. I understand warranties, no prob, BUT if you have a clear design flaw you fix it past the warranty. Period. I bought a Ryobi this past weekend. If B&D won't stand by their designs I will not be buying their products.
No, I do not recommend this product.

I recently purchased this Grass Hog to replace a previously owned B & D 14" string trimmer that burned up. That sould have been a sign. This Grass Hog is considerabily heavier than my previous trimmer. As other reviews have stated, the unit eats up trimmer line like it's last supper. When done mowing I have to not only sweep up grass trimmings, but also little green pieces of trim line cut from the unit. The replacement spool is hard to reload new line from bulk spools. Using bulk spools is the only way you can afford to use this trimmer. Buying replacement spools of line would simply break the bank. Replacing this line was so difficult and time consumming that I simply loaded line to only come out one of the holes it the head. This seems to reduce the need to stop and manually refeed line through the head. So much for purchasing a dual line trimmer. Better luck next time B & D.
No, I do not recommend this product.

The auto-feed line function is total garbage. The length constantly varies and is impossible to keep a consistent trim line. Additionally, the spool that is installed with the unit is the only one that functions near-well. As soon as you have to replace it, you will spent countless sessions respooling the line.

I have the BLACK & DECKER Grass Hog XP 14 in. 7.2 amp String Trimmer weed whacker and it worked flawlessly for the first five or six times I used it.
Then, just today, the motor continued to run but the rotor and string didn't. I completely disassembled the the unit and found like so many others that have posted reviews here that the plastic hub, driven by the belt, had melted.
Personally, I find the fact that a gear hub used in the drive train of anything would fail before the belt that drives it is remarkable but that is obviously the case. I also assume that, given the complaints of such an utterly awful design decision, the individual responsible for it is probably working in the Black & Decor mail room.
Anyway, the take home message for anyone who has experienced this problem is that I contacted Black & Decor about it and with absolutely no hesitation they insisted on sending me a replacement unit...no charge, no questions asked. I mentioned that I no longer had the sales receipt...that didn't mater. I was told to cut the electric cord of the unit and send it to them along with a Reference Number that they provided and a replacement unit would be provided, post hast.
Bottom line, they know they failed on an engineering design of this product and they are committed to make it right. The contact at Black&Decor told me this unit has gone through three mods since it's introduction in 2006 as a result of customer feedback.
I'm persuaded Black & Decor just may be a company that is genuinely concerned about quality. And is determined to fix mistakes.
Yes, I recommend this product.

I have other products from B&D that work great. That is why I chose this trimmer. But alas, like other reviewers, I came to find out that after about 10 hours use, yes 10 hours MAX, the drive gear/pulley melted and is now unusable. Replace the part??? $60 and change before shipping cost.... or just about the same as a new unit. Really a shame too, for it worked fine up until it had a "melt down". What would it cost to use metal instead of plastic? If it would have added $20 to the purchase price I would have no problem with paying it. As it is now, I feel that this product was designed to fail. I am not an engineer, but even I could see that this product was doomed to fail after I took it apart. Sorry B&D you have lost a customer here.
No, I do not recommend this product.

Yes, this is tempting as it is powerful and inexpensive. But do yourself a favor, buy a better quality product. Have had mine for a year. Goes through string like crazy, so I bought in bulk and wound myself. Now it doesn't feed anymore. I cut for a few minutes, flip it up uncover the spool and manually feed it out...all cause I wanted to save a few bucks. The job takes me twice as long as it should.
