I liked this trimmer until the drive belt and plastic gearing melted down (belt stripped and melted the teeth on gearing). I have used it about a dozen times, so it can't be normal wear and tear that led to the break down.
Apparently this has happened with other customers (see similar review on this page). Replacing the gearing requires purchase of the entire motor, gears and belt, which costs as much as the entire unit new.

One of the worst products I have ever bought -- let alone worst string trimmer. I used it for less than 2 hours and went through 2 spools of string at $8/spool. This is a waste of a product.

Works great, but mine just started the dreaded line-eating problem. I'll get some more just to confirm what I'm pretty sure is a terminal problem. I went through a spool in just a few minutes! I love electric gear, but this one may be on its way out. I'd avoid it and look elsewhere.

I was very satisfied for a while until it stopped working. Good strong motor, but cheap plastic drive gear.
I took it apart to fix it...UNBELIEVABLE...The drive gear was totally stripped...It is made of PLASTIC...Unable to purchase just the gear, and the drive belt...Either buy another one, or buy the entire motor which is connected to the drive gear...Not much of a choice.....
amen......

Bought this trimmer about 4 years ago and used it about once a year. Most recent use was to eliminate overgrown lilies. Shortly after finishing the spool stopped turning but motor was operational. Opening the case of the trimmer I found B&D uses a belt to transfer power from the motor to the cable. The cable is turned by the belt running on a PLASTIC gear. My gear was fried. Why would anyone transfer power from a 7.2amp motor with plastic? I thought with a 7 amp motor I was buying a fairly heavy duty tool. Not so. Avoid if possible.

i can not tell you what a hunk o' junk this thing is. i paid a lot of $ for it at a big box store thinking it was time to "upgrade" since the motor burned out on my $30 weed wacker.
first off, the "automatic feed" does not work. i would stop every 10', flip it over, pull the cap off & feed a few more inches of string out.
then the motor burned out. honestly, i'm really happy b/c now i can throw this thing away & get something that might last.
which brings me to the final point. i only used this thing for a year, avg 2 times/month at most. so lets be generous & say i used it 24 times. sounds like the gears inside are stripped. probably plastic & just wore down. the motor runs but the strings don't spin.
DO NOT BUY THIS!
i will never buy anything black & decker again.

I had this trimmer for 2 summers, and it worked well during that time, mostly. I can't say I really thought much about it- seemed like an average trimmer to me. The first day out this summer it broke about 5 minutes into the day. A plastic gear in the housing stripped, and in order to replace this $.50 piece I have to replace the entire motor. The motor, a new drive belt, and shipping, is just barely more expensive that buying a new one (and that's from other online parts providers; the parts are even more expensive from B&D itself).
I'm looking forward to purchasing a different model.

The 7.2 AMP motor is plenty strong to quickly strip the plastic main drive gear. Since the main drive gear is integrated in the motor assembly, and cannot be obtained separately from Black and Decker, the cost of repairing the trimmer is about the same as buying a new one. Having to throw the whole thing away because of a $5 plastic gear is ridiculous, so save yourself the frustration and buy something else.

I have owned this trimmer for about 2 yrs. I used it maybe on average twice a month. Usually to edge the lawn after mowing. Occasionally I'll do some heavy weeding with it. I've only replaced the line twice maybe three times. I've used the pre-loaded line and I've rewired it myself. Hint on rewiring: make it tight and then let it stay tight for a day or two. For me if I didn't do this the line would unravel. So I haven't really used it a lot ( I would say) and then the belt inside it broke. It wasn't hard to fix it myself. Just had to find a place where they sell it (there's a local Dewalt/black and decker repair center near me). It was just $3.17. However, while I was there there were two other customers there. And yep, they had the same grass Hog xp. Two different problems. I can't remember exactly what they were but it sounded like a small part, like the push button. So while this trimmer does get the job done, it seems to break down easily. Since this is the only trimmer I've owned, I don't know if others are better, but when this one finally becomes unfixable(or too expensive to fix) I'll be exploring a different brand.
side note: why do they even have a belt? why not just have the cable attached directly to the motor? Oh so they can repair it.
No, I do not recommend this product.

The long flexible drive shaft broke. I replaced the drive shaft and it's broken a second time. I bought this because 1) it's electric, 2) the heavy motor is not at the far end, 3) the cutting end profile is fairly flat, allowing it to get under bushes. However, it keeps breaking. Although the thing is powerful and it does a good job trimming when it is working, it's probably just a two-season-item-and-throw-it-away.
No, I do not recommend this product.

There is plenty of power in this unit, which is the good news. The bad news is the head is horribly designed, impossible to load and at times comes apart while trimming. I do not dispute that some people had good experiences with this trimmer. I did too for a short while. Nonetheless, after loading several times, you will find that the cap that holds the the disk on the head of the unit releases during trimming. Consider yourself lucky if you can find it when that happens. PS, I am very competent with tools, etc. Sadly, this thing is very poorly designed which is why I am on this site looking for a new trimmer. This one is headed to the curb.

Like others have said, I initially liked this product. I have used both gas and corded trimmers over the years. Each have their pros and cons. Though dealing with an extension cord is a pain, I like how an electric trimmer always starts, doesn't leave you smelling like smoke and oil, and is lower in noise, etc.
This guy worked well for awhile - a season or two - and then became practically inoperable. The line stopped advancing properly, yards of line would disappear in seconds, the spool would get tangled, etc.
Today, I went to HD, and bought a new package of line. I went on YouTube, googled, etc, and looked for expert advice. I carefully wound my spool and tried it.
Again, within seconds, I had to stop, and rewind my line. This continued all afternoon. At first I was angry, and then the situation became almost comical. I wondered if any of my neighbors looking on - wondering when I would finally crack.
I didn't crack. I completed the front yard a few feet at a time - stopping and rewinding as I went. I then calmly walked over to the already full trashcan, and smashed it into the remaining spaces and gaps.
I hate this thing. Buy something better, or "invest" in a gas one.
No, I do not recommend this product.

Don't waste your money. Mine did not last a year. Eats up line faster than any trimmer I have ever used. Jams up constantly even if you purchase the pricey pre-rolled spools. When it doesn't jam up, it releases too much line that snaps off and whips you in the leg. Hands down the worst lawn care product I have ever purchased.

The String trimmer has plenty of power, not so badly balanced and does a nice job edging and trimming the yard. It is able to go through the thickest grass in a couple easy passes and does not bog down.
The problem with it is the auto spool line feeder. It feeds the line constantly until the feedeer is empty. Not sure why they don't have the bump and go or 3rd party people have not jumped on this yet, but I use a whole spool to go around my house once (2 story 3 bedroom, nothing large).
The concept of autospool is okay, but I would prefer to make the decission to replace the line. My prior B&D was under powered but did not have the appetite for line as this one does. And like another reviewer mentioned, I have a couple nice cuts from large pieces of string being trown out, so wear heavy boots and long pants.
If they could fix the string issue, great trimmer that is not gas dependent.
Yes, I recommend this product.

This trimmer cuts through everything with ease. The power is incredible and the two cutting lines work great. I tried the battery operated trimmer and returned it after the batteries lasted ONLY 20 minutes each. The hassle of the cord is offset by the power.

Has good power but, string is always tangling when fed. It also will spit chunks of the string at your shins/ankles. I have several scars to prove it. There is a recall on this thru B&D, which I took advantage of. They send u anew spool, screws, and cover to install. I did this and it still spits.
Yes, I know I could wear long pants, but that's not the issue. Poor design and frustrating to use.
