Broke after 18 months

This microwave came with my new house. After 18 months (6 months after the warranty expired), it started giving me trouble. It stops cooking and the display lights up all of the segments. Sometimes, I have to unplug and plug it back in to get it to work. I had to re-start it 3 times to get it to heat for 1 minute.
I talked to an former Maytag/Whirlpool engineer who told me it probably needs a new control board. These parts list for $180. You can buy a new microwave for that!
I guess I'm buying a new microwave, and not this model. Its not reliable.
