"I'm cooling a 2nd story 500sqf studio with cathedral ceilings and a west facing sliding glass door. These are difficult conditions for any air conditioner and a window unit was not an option. I bought this LG a year ago and have put at least 500 hours on the unit.
The last couple days have been in the 100s with 30%+ humidity. Bottom-line is this: this unit will give you about a 20 degree relief from what's going on outside in a large room (to a point - read below.) Today was 105 (low of 74 at night) and after running the unit all day, the temperature in the room never went over 82. This is excellent performance for the circumstances.
I live in the NW and most of the summer is not terribly humid. However, when it is, you will have to remove water from the A/C every 4-6 hours. The process for removing water is not good. There is a small spout on the back about a half inch off the ground. There is an included hose, but this isn't helpful. I use a deep baking sheet and dump that into a pot to transport to the sink. To get all the water out, I have to tilt the unit on a side and in the direction of the tray. It's not very convenient. I probably wouldn't recommend this unit for those in a really humid area, as you'd spend a lot of time removing water. However, if you live in a place that has only a few humid days or you live in the SW, this is not problematic.
I have a lot of positive things to say about this A/C. It is very nice looking, as far as these things go. It's shiny, has nice lines, and the buttons are functional and unobtrusive. It couldn't be easier to install. It has an on timer, oscillates up and down, and can act as a fan and/or dehumidifier. Finally, the compressor is quiet. The fan is loud on high, but this is not a problem for me. On low, you're not going to find a quieter air conditioner.
My only problem is with the water removal. I will live with this defect.
Okay, so here is an interesting thing. When the outside temperature begins to match the inside temperature, when in the 70s outside, the unit stops cooling at the same rate. For example, at the moment it is 76 outside, but I can't get the inside under 75. This is very strange. I think it may have something to do with the dew point, but it's unclear.
I would recommend this unit to anyone who understands what you're buying. In fact, I am on the site right now to buy one for my mother. You probably will not be disappointed."
