Atticat Loose Fill Blowing Insulation

This product, with the insulation blowing machine, provides the consumer with the means to quickly and easily insulate their attics. A job can usually be completed in less than 4 hours from start to finish. There's very little mess, since the product expands inside the machine and produces very little dust. This product doesn't settle, so it keeps it's energy saving R-value over time.

WHEN I STARTED THINKING ABOUT ADDING MORE
INSULATION IN MY ATTIC,I DREADED THINKING ABOUT
HOW HARD IT WAS GOING TO BE TO ROLL OUT BATTS
OF INSULATION. THAT'S PROBABLY WHY I NEVER DID
IT. I STARTED RESEARCHING OTHER WAYS AND
LOOKED INTO BLOWN-IN INSULATION. THEN I CAME
ACROSS ATTICAT DO IT YOURSELF WITH FREE
MACHINE RENTAL WHEN YOU BUY 10 BAGS OF INSULATION. I JUST DIDN'T BELIEVE HOW EASY THIS
WAS. I CUT THE BALES IN HALF THE NIGHT BEFORE
AND WITH MY WIFE LOADING THE MACHINE AND ME
IN THE ATTIC, WE BLEW IN 19 BAGS IN UNDER 4 HOURS. MY ATTIC WENT FROM R-19 TO R-44.
I WOULD RECOMMEND THIS TO ANYONE WHO IS
THINKING ABOUT ADDING INSULATION TO THEIR HOME.
DON'T EVEN THINK THAT YOU CAN'T DO IT,BECAUSE
IT WAS SOOO EASY.
Yes, I recommend this product.

My wife fed the blower and I stayed in the attic. Took way longer than we expected. Years ago I worked for a company that blew in cellulose insulation, the machine was 3 times faster, the Arctic Cat blower took 6 hours to blow in 17 bags. Over 10% of the product blew out of the machine onto the ground, we had to move the machine into my box trailer so we wouldn't cover our neighbors property with insulation. Once in the trailer My wife would scoop the insulation that blew out of the machine and put it back in when the product got low enough in the machine. The Home Depot Store is over an hour away one way and we had the last machine they had to send out so we just dealt with the poor running machine. I did however like the insulation better than the cellulose insulation and was surprised at how it did not itch like normal fiberglass insulation.
Yes, I recommend this product.

It only took 2 hours to blow in 22 bundles. That significantly increased the R-value in my 1960 sq. ft. attic. Probably the easiest DIY project I've done, only wish I had done it sooner.

This was the easiest DIY job I have ever done. Can't believe I have not insulated earlier. I purchased the soffit vent channels a week earlier and prepped my attic for the new insulation.
Using the formulas online and on the bag. I figured it would take 25 bags for my 1500 square foot space. I planned on going to an r-49 as was the high end of the suggested for my area. I ended up taking 11 bags back.
It took my son (17 years old) and me about 2 hours to complete the job. We cut several of the bags in half the night before then just cut as needed.
I can't stress how easy this was. We did it early (March) before it got too hot and started at about 9am.
We noticed a big difference in the house immediately. Our a/c doesn't take long to cool the house now and it holds temp much longer than before. My wife actually complained that it was too cold one afternoon.
I plan on getting back the money I spent during the first summer alone everything else will just be gravy.
Don't put it off and you get to clean all of he junk out of your attic.
Yes, I recommend this product.

This is the best way to do attic insulation, super fast and easy.. and not much clean up.. the secret is to have your attic prep ahead of time (every thing move out of the way) .
The machine is user friendly, and works real well.
2000 square foot house, 9 bags of product , 2 people, done in 1 hour 30 mins including clean up ! My kind of DYI project !

My girlfriend and I installed 16 bales of Atticat insulation in our home in November 2011. It took about 2.5 hours and increased our attic from R-30 to R-60 (960 sq ft). At the same time, we had our 23 year old furnace replaced with a new 80% efficient one (couldn't justify the additional cost for the 90+% furnaces, since our home is so small). The Atticat machine worked great and this stuff doesn't itch. I was pleasantly surprised. Since then, I've received 2 months of gas bills since the installation and after compensating for temperature variations from last year, it looks like we're using 35-40% fewer therms per month than last year. I was hoping for 30%, so I'm thrilled with the results. This is a great project for the novice DIYer!

I did a lot of research before adding insulation to my house. I went to Home Depot and they had some out on a shelf. I have delt with a lot of insulation being a satellite dish installer, so I know that I didn't want to blow something in that was going to make me itch and have a lot of dust. I grabbed a handful of the insulation and to my surprise it was like a cotton ball, no itching or dust. I blew it in with the machine provided and it was an absolute pleasure. It was actually fun, the machine performed flawlessly, no dust, no itching. It took about 1.5 hours to do 1000sqft. That includes cleanup and a break in the middle for water. The machine was about as loud as a shop vac and the on/off control on the hose was awesome. My girlfriend loaded the bails while I blew the insulation in. It was super easy and you can tell a difference almost immediately in the house. Top notch product all the way around.
Yes, I recommend this product.

My wife and I recently elected to do this upgrade to our house, and this could not have been simpler or easier.
I was very impressed by the machine. Although you can get the blower for free if you buy 10 or more bags, you can also rent the machine for like $75 a day. When you rent the machine, you can also get the insurance on it, and given how expensive this machine is, it's not worth saving $75 on the project by avoiding the rental fee. Do yourself a favor - rent the machine, buy the insurance.
The machine itself is both *BIG* and *HEAVY*. It breaks into two parts, but unless you have a very big car or a pickup truck, you will not be able to move this in a standard vehicle. Because of the weight of the bottom piece, I highly recommend that at least two of you pick it up. The other issue is the hoses. These things are *BIG* and they are *INFLEXIBLE*. In fact, it's like wrestling an anaconda to put them back in the trash cans they come in.
You will also need a roll of tape to tape the two pieces together. Packing tape works, but I recommend you use duct tape (NOT DUCK tape! Unless you plan on taping some ducks together).
The remote was awesome. While I was navigating around in the attic, I could stop the machine while repositioning instead of screaming at my wife to turn it off or turn it on.
Some others have also recommended you get a broom handle to tape the hose to. We used a window washing pole and some panduits to hold the hose at the end of the pole. Had I not done this, there is no way I could have gotten the entire attic done (1000 + square foot house - not huge) but the joists made it very hard to move around.
The insulation doesn't blow around like cellulose nor is it irritating like regular fiberglass batts. That said, you should wear at least a paper mask while blowing this as well as eye protection. Head protection is also recommended given the spaces you are working in.
I had guessed that we would need 15 bags to do the job, and we used a total of 8! I was AMAZED at the coverage of this stuff.
All in all, even with renting a van, paying for the machine rental and the insulation, the total job was around $400 all told. A local insulation company wanted to charge us nearly $1200 for this job.
I wish we had done this sooner - it's an excellent, cheap upgrade that will pay you back for years and years to come.
Yes, I recommend this product.

I had to do a 'confined space' job last August, for a business, where none of their guys would even go into the narrow space I had to wiggle into (about 14" x 21") and then into the 35 ft long by 23" clear space from top of ceiling joist to bottom of roof rafter. SO, the remote on/off and the hose for the AttiCat machine did wonderfully. I did have a 'spotter' down a floor and outside the space...'just in case'..! The power to absolutely fill the vertical cavities, and the power to blow it over 10 ft away where even I could not reach, made the job fast and done well. Would use it again in a heartbeat. Notice, I could NOT have done the job with the old 'cellulose' machine.
Yes, I recommend this product.

This combination makes for a fast installation. The machine worked very well at breaking up the bail and delivering a steady flow of the insulation. I would have really liked some kind of way to control the flow at hose end. Besides that gripe, it was a smooth install with this system.

We just bought a 44-year-old house from the original owner. Well cared for, great hardwood floors, just what we were looking for. Well, with one exception -- it only had about 4" of insulation and given our winters that was not nearly enough. I watched the 10 minute AttiCat video on Youtube -- highly recommended. We spent a couple of hours the day before prepping the attic -- protecting soffit vents and can lighting. Put the blower in the garage and ran the hose up three flights of stairs to the attic. This is a great system. Three of us blew in 13 bags of AttiCat in a little more than two hours. So now we're ready for winter. Bring it on, you white stuff. You're no match for pink!

The daughters’ townhouse needed some improvement over the half baked insulating job from the original developer. The attic is somewhat a nightmare with vaulted ceilings, 25” truss roof framing, secondary sheathing as pseudo support and some very inaccessible areas. More time was actually spent planning how to maneuver through the trusses, laying 2X’s as a walkway and testing the egress paths.
Scaling the floor plan, the insulation conversion chart on the bags was truly accurate. The machine worked great with the only downside as mention was the loading. We quartered the bundles to get them into the machine and set up a loading assembly line prior to starting. The side mount cutter wouldn’t do the job; the daughter unfortunately had to be the loader. The insulation occasionally needed some assistance into the hopper, 5 gallon paint stirring sticks helped. The townhouse attic space only has 1 access point from the garage. The two lengths of hose were able to make the entire run through the truss rafters and the hose mounted remote control made controlling and maintaining a gap between the roof to ceiling easy and efficient. Adapting a painting extension stick to the hose solved the hard to reach area issue and those narrow cavities were filled without blocking any ventilation or short changing the area.
Yes, I recommend this product.

I was surprised by the claim of expansion seemed to be correct, however trying to get the product from the machine to the attic was horrible. It took us over an hour to get just one bag through the machine and up to the attic, multiply that by 10 bags. If you are going to use this product DO NOT go by what they state for timing. The problem lies with the machine. The insulation is packed so tight in the bags, even adding only 1/2 a bag as directed. The hopper gets clogged after about 2 minutes of running the product. The tips of the augers just arent strong enough to break the insulation up. You have to stop the machine, unplug it, then break the insulation up with your hands, which is a messy, wasteful time consuming thing to do. With no exageration, you have to stop the machine after about 2 minutes, and break the insulation up again, before it will run through the hose. Once you do get it running it works good, until 2 minutes later. While overall I think the product is good, they need to go back to the drawing board and re-design the augers. All I can say is i'm glad you only have to iinsulate your attic once.
No, I do not recommend this product.

After giving the attic a good look over, I decided I needed more insulation. When they built the house, the missed some places. I watched the videos of this on YouTube, and it looked simple so I decided to do it myself with the help of my wife. I was concerned because my wife has back problems. I picked up the machine and insulation in the afternoon. Prior to this, I redid the soffit vents. Early the next morning I cut all the bales of insulation in half as the directions state and put them all on a table outside to make it easy on my wife. The hose on the machine is 100 ft. long, so I went through my garage access and was able to reach all the way to the back of the attic. This was extremely nice because I didn't have to move the machine into the house to get the far corners of the attic. The hose also has on/off controls so I was able to control everything. That made it extremely nice. The insulation blew in very easily with no dust, etc. It's easy to control and get insulation where you want it. If I ever have to do it again, I'll definitely use the AttiCat system. I would recommend watching the YouTube video from Owens Corning so that you can see ahead of time how everything works.
Yes, I recommend this product.

After reading all the reviews, I knew the girlfriend and I could handle this project ourselves. Her 650sf attic had some lousy 18yr-old cellulose and the upstairs was cold in winter and hot in summer. I'd worked for an insulation company one summer so I knew fiberglass was the way to go. I called the store to see if we could reserve the machine (no) and how long the machine rental was for (24 hours), so we went the night before to pick up the 10 bags to get the machine rental for free. Heads up: there is a $250 deposit that you'll get back when you return the machine.
I set her up outside, stacked the split-in-half bags, and gave it a go. We could not have had a better experience. The hour meter on the machine was 3.7 after we had used it for an hour, so we were lucky to get new equipment. The directions on the bags were more than enough to know what to do.
Our tips:
Duct tape: you need it to attach the broomstick to the end of the hose.
5' paint roller pole: I didn't have a spare broomstick.
Dropcloth: we had to access the attic through a 2'x3' hatch, and I managed to blow a lot of insulation down over the ladder and onto the floor.
Extension cord: the machine calls for a 14ga cord, which HD did not provide.
Flashlight. Even if you have a lightbulb in the attic, you'll still want to move around and see into the corners.
Safety: Dust mask, goggles, rubber gloves, long sleeves.
The insulation blew in thicker than advertised... we were shooting for R49 and we got almost to R60. It was very low mess, and no dust. The machine was as otherwise reviewed: quiet as a vacuum. Our remote worked fine. Very pleased with the whole operation, can't wait to see next month's power bill.
Yes, I recommend this product.

I blew 27 bags in my attic, raising the insulation factor to R-49. It was easy and took about four hours with very little clean up. I could tell a diffrence it made overnight, the furnace didn't come on all night!! I know this insulation is going to save us money in our utility bills. Needed to insulate a wall for sound proofing a nursery. After receiving a qoute just to sound proof room was $700-$900...No brainer. Decided to purchase 15 bales and add some insulation in the attic at the same time. Couple of hours work, noticeable reduction in sound coming through wall, and noticeable difference in thermostat. Recommended this as an easy home project to all my friends.
