Microwave woes,

"I was okay with the microwave for getting it cheap. But you get what you pay for. This microwave was powerful and easy to install, but didn't offer the ease of use my previous microwave provided.
The worst part is that the microwave was very sensitive to steam from boiling water on the stove. After the main 1 year warrenty expired, the microwave started having problems with steam. Once exposed, it would start coming on, then shutting off on its own. It would then act like it had blown a fuse, and just died. After a while, it would come back on. It would repeat this 3 or 4 times before it behaved. This went on for the next year. Now, after having it for 2 years, it won't stop this cycle. We have to unplug it when not in use. I'm shopping for another microwave, and Magic Chef is off my list."

"the microwave is ok. its is very noisy. the light on the inside flickers all the time. and not to mention we had the microwave for no more than 45 days and the glass plate on the inside broke the first time we cooked popcorn on it. so dont try cooking popcorn in it if you dont want to have to locate another glass plate for it!"

"I purchased this microwave in July 2009 and had it professionally installed. It was quickly tested after the installation and ran like a charm.... That was until I decided to use it to cook. After 1:58 the power went out on this device. I checked the circuit breaker and it was still on.
I had an electrician come and check out the unit. He performed several test and was surprised that the microwave would shut off after 1:58 but the breaker was still on. He also noticed a faint oder when using this machine.
I am not happy with this product and wouldn't recommend it to others."

"I purchased one of these on 6/26/2009 and learned the hard way about ignoring the readily available reviews on this site. Upon opening the box, I noticed that this is a nice looking unit, for the price. Hardware, templates and everything else necessary for installation were included in the box and things seemed to be in order until I sat the oven on the counter and turned it on. Within a minute of being plugged in and turned on, the microwave began smoking and making a grating sound which seems to be coming from the top of the unit. Needless to say, this piece of garbage is going back to HD today. I'm only giving it a single-star rating because that is as low as I can go."

"Several of the buttons don't work, such as popcorn and baked potato. Time cook works OK. Notice many complaints about sound of fan, but not that bad. After using it for awhile, the thin film covering the buttons is beginning to pucker and blister and will soon be coming off. Realize it is a low end product due to price, but think it should perform better than it does and have a better quality control panel. However, removal and installation was excellent and was well pleased with the crew."

Microwave not working,

"I bought this exact microwave 1 year ago and it has just stopped working completely for no reason. i tried unplugging and replugging but it has not worked now in weeks. None of the buttons work on it at all not even the clock buttons works. It only shows the wrong time when plugged in. I am very disappointed as the last microwave I had my mom gave me and it worked for more than 30 years before having to buy this one. I was shocked that it only last a year and will never buy this brand again."

"Bought this from HD 10 months ago. Poor quality, already dead with normal use. Fan very loud when it worked, but that's what failed. would not reccomend if you are planning to have it for any length of time."

"Purchased this Black Friday in 07' have had it installed one year and 3 months. It's GARBAGE!!!!! Worked ok for a year now it just goes on automatically with nothing in it. I now keep it unplugged until I need it because I don't trust it during the day when I am at work. Read a blog with about 400 reviews on this particular microwave and was amazed with how many had the same exact complaint!! From what I have read no help from Magic Chef. My fault for not reading Consumer Reports to find the best microwave, or at least not one that needs to be replaced every year. Please don't buy unless you want to waste your money!!!!"

"I'm shoppong for a new one and am leaving my first product review. Got this one a year ago and after 8 months if we boiled anything under it (with fan on) the buttons would stop working until we unplugged it and let it dry out for awhile. over the last few months drying it out stopped curing the problem, So fine microwave just don't put it above your stove."

Great Microwave for the Price,

"I bought this microwave the Black Friday before last (BF07) for $70 (after MIR) and I finally installed the unit today. At first it really loud but it turned out to be an issue with the venting. I installed using the vertical outside venting (not the standard recirculation) option but the metal flap on the venting which was supposed to open wasn't so I lowered the microwave and bent the venting so it opened correctly and it made a huge difference in the fan noise. If I run into any issues I will update the my review but so far so good."

Microwave Does the Job,

"I bought this Magic Chef microwave at Home Depot to replace a countertop microwave that died (another Magic Chef that lasted 20 years). Installation was straight-forward and took me about 3 hours (which includes adding the plug in the cabinet and removing the range hood). The noise doesn't seem to be any worse than my neighbor's over the range microwave. The cooking speed is good, turntable nice, has spacious interior. Some of the pre set setting buttons for beverages, popcorn etc may not be accurate - I generally just put in my own time for each occasion. My only problem has been trying to microwave popcorn in the bags. The oven seems to overheat and it shuts down completely. After about 10 minutes, the power comes on again and I reset the clock. Don't know what that's about but I have to contact Magic Chef support to find out (hence the reason for 4 stars instead of 5). Good value for the money - best model and price for an over the counter microwave."

"We installed this MW before Christmas and have no problem with the noise at all. Before we had a $ 549.-- MV and it was much louder. All our guests loved it and nobody thought it to being loud.
We appreciate the fan going on automatically - good for airing out the kitchen and getting rid of odors from food."

"I had no issues at all with the sound like some other people have said. I think it is very quiet actually. Maybe the other reviers had the vent fan on or bad units?? My parents have a roper which is much louder so I was surprised after hearing how quiet this unit was. Seems to work good so far but I have not used it much since I just installed it today. Looks great and saves room no reason for me to give it less then 5 stars at this price range."

"This microwave is poorly designed!! Designed to have the exhaust fan come on whenever you use the microwave. Manual states it will come on whenever it gets hot from your range or appliances being used under it. However, it comes on all the time and is very loud! You are also not able to turn the fan off and it can run up to an hour after use! Just heating a cup of water caused the fan to run for 30min after use. Do not buy this microwave--I will be packing it up and returning mine after one days use!"

"After reading reviews about noise from this microwave I ran it on my tool bench. The noise was no greater than my 25 year GE that I was replacing. I installed it myself and it looks and runs great. Noise is not a problem.
The only problem that I have is I don't know how to apply for the $30 rebate that was advertised 11/27/08.

"this microwave is very noisy. I installed it, couldn't stand the loud noise, uninstalled it and returned it. I would not recommend this model unless you have a very large kitchen and don't mind extra noise. It otherwise works fine."
