Customer reviews for 6+ Gal. 6-Year 1500W 120 Volt Point-of-Use Mini Electric Water Heater

6+ Gal. 6-Year 1500W 120 Volt Point-of-Use Mini Electric Water Heater

Installing an Ariston electric mini-tank water heater under the sink puts hot water right where you need it at the point-of-use. Lightweight and compact this heater is available in three space-saving sizes: 2.5, 4, and 6+ gallons. These heaters are aesthetic on the outside, glass-lined on the inside, and offer superior insulation for higher efficiency.

I will recap first then give the long version.
A. This is not a simple "plug and play" honey-do project.
B. National Code requires proper electrical connection and plumbing.
C. Maintenance is required for ALL water heaters.
The details:
1. It is best to install the unit where it can be serviced easily (not under the sink unless you are a contortionist), because you will need to inspect the anode annually. Higher water mineral content may require inspections more often. In a large unit, the anode can be up to 29" long and last for many years. It isn't physically possible for this small unit to have a long anode, so it will wear sooner. This is not a defect, just physics.
2. For the full capacity of 6+ gallons, orient the unit so the hot/cold pipe holes are on the right side. Install the 3/4" brass stop plug between them and the Temperature/Pressure relief valve on top with thread paste, not tape, and wait a day for it to set. Be sure to twist the T/P valve so that the female threaded part (outlet) faces the direction you will be installing the rigid overflow pipe, which must be full size (3/4") and must exit the dwelling according to National code. Code also requires a drain pan under the unit. You can make one out of a cat litter pan (X Large: 22.5"L x 16.7"W x 6.7"H ) - it fits right in it.
3. I installed a couple 3/4 male by 3/8 C brass adapters in the pipe holes using thread paste and connected two 3/8 C by 3/8 C hot water rated (red) flexible supply lines to them. The cold water line (input) comes from a shutoff valve connected to the house water pipe. The hot one connects to the bathroom sink (and a tee to the shower line).
4. The electrical requirement of this unit and CODE demands a DEDICATED 20amp 12 gauge wire circuit, properly grounded. Merely plugging this into a 15amp 14 gauge wire circuit will seem to work, but it may overload the line dangerously and under power the element. That means tepid, not hot water or tripped circuit breakers and the risk of fire from overheated connections. Do not use an extension cord.
5. There is an internal thermostat that can be lowered or raised to desired effect. It was preset at the factory at or near sea level. The altitude of your installation will affect the temperature you experience out of the box and you may have to adjust it.
6. The recovery rate directly relates to the temperature of the water coming in. In the winter, that temperature may be near freezing and the recovery rate will be longer. With 38 degree water, mine took 1 hour and 15 minutes to fully recover (the red light goes off). In summer, with higher input water temperatures, it will recover much faster. The unit is self insulated and the water stays hot for a long time between uses without consuming power. Yes, I use it for showers too. 7 to 10 minutes or more using a shut off on the shower head.
pros: hot water on demand, compact, pleasing exterior, quiet, reliable, shipping was super fast to my door.
cons: thermostat is not easy to get to, but you may only have to adjust it once. Requires proper installation, which can add half again to the cost. Worth every penny though. The anode (#570241) required for maintenance is not available locally.
Pros: Reliable, Easy to Install, Good Instructions, No Leaks, hot water on demand, pleasing form factor, shipped fast to my door
Cons: anode not available locally, themostat access not convenient
Yes, I recommend this product.

We replaced the worn-out water heater in our fifth wheel with this unit, it was a breeze to install, provides plenty of hot water for our needs and for its price compared to a replacement propane/electric RV water heater this was actually a no-brainer.
Now of course we lost our propane ability to heat water but since our unit is set up year-round as a quasi-Park model it was not an issue.
All I had to do was remove the old one, I put a cap on the main propane line and slid this unit right into the same area and plugged it into the same switch that provided AC power to the original one.
Works like a dream and would definitely recommend as a replacement if you don't require propane.
Pros: Reliable, Easy to Install, Good Instructions, No Leaks
Yes, I recommend this product.

Unit corroded out after only 5 years. Bosch would not cover it under warranty because the anode was not changed yearly. I have a whole house that has lasted 18 years without an anode change. It suggests quality of parts is poor.Very disappointed in the product and support.
Pros: Easy to Install
Cons: Leaks
No, I do not recommend this product.

Needed a water heater to use while my boiler was shut down. I didnt want to spend alot of money. This heater works great. Use a restrictor in your shower heads and you get a decent length shower. Great for washing dishes and short use. About 20 minute recovery. Serves its purpose.
Pros: Easy to Install
Yes, I recommend this product.

I bought this heater to use in my camp which is used mostly in the winter for snowmobiling. With no drain in heater it means I will need to disconnect both hot and cold connection and take the heater to the sink to drain water out. There is no
heat in camp when nobody is there. I would not recommend this heater for my situation. If heater doesn't need draining
it will work fine.
Pros: Easy to Install, Good Instructions
Cons: no drain
No, I do not recommend this product.

I had used a 4-gal Ariston Mini Electric Water Heater (the actual capacity is 3.85 gal), and it lasted about 5.5 years.
This 6+ gal one has over 7 gal capacity, which is good. But I have two problems with it. The first problem is that the plug came with the water heater (to plug one of the outlets for relief valve) could not stop water leak, doesn't matter how tied. I had to try many times with water seal tapes, but still there is dripping. You can imagine, it was quite mess everytime I had to take it out and re-apply the white tape. At the end I had to give up. The other problem is that the temperature cannot be adjusted. I want the water temperature just a little bit higher.
Pros: Easy to Install
Cons: Leaks, cannot adjust temperature
No, I do not recommend this product.

You have to read the fine print to know that the warranty is voided if you do not change the electrode periodically. To change the electrode you have to empty the installed heater. But there is no drain hole or tap provided at the bottom of this unit. To drain the water you have to dismantle the plumbing lines, (good luck if it is plumbed with solid pipes or you have to work in a tight space), then carry this heater full of water, open the middle part where the electrode is located and let the water out, That's quite a laborious task and that is why this heater got one star.
Pros: Easy to Install
No, I do not recommend this product.

I bought this for my travel trailer that I am now living full time in. I am a senior citizen and found it quite easy to handle and install. However, even though the water gets "warm" enough for showering; it is not HOT water. I turned thermostat completely up and the temperture would NOT burn anyone. But is sufficient. I expected more for the cost!
Pros: Easy to Install
Cons: not hot enough
No, I do not recommend this product.

The unit arrived in perfect condition, installation was very easy. I only needed to buy a few hoses from the local Home Depot to hook it into my plumbing. The water volume capacity is higher (7 gal) than labeled on the box or web if you follow the installation manual and install it on its side. The unit's internal insulation seems very good because I do not see the unit turning on to keep the water hot, it only seems to turn on after we run the hot water and deplete it's content. So I think this unit will save me money in the long run because I am using less hot water from my main house heater. Overall I am very happy with this unit.
Yes, I recommend this product.

Needed new Water Heater for my 5th wheel. Love this compact unit that works on 110 using only 12.5 amps. I had to install an electrical outlet but no problem as electricity was already available to the area. Now I don't have to worry about propane and complications with that. This has super fast recovery and great heat. Two people can easily take a shower or one and doing dishes at the same time. No remodeling as the unit fit in the space perfectly. It also should be easy to winterize and drain.
Yes, I recommend this product.

Easy to install if you're handy. This our second Ariston, a previous 2.5 gal. model did have a leak problem a few years back as discussed in other reviews, but replaced with another and has done well. This 6 gal. unit supplies our master bath and shower> installed in crawl space below and went from over 90 seconds waiting to about 12 seconds to get hot water. Plan on buying the 2x 3/4" water heater hose package with compression fittings [25 bucks] if you're plumbing other than under the sink. Also consider/plan where the water will go if it does leak.
Very efficient as its only supplementing the larger gas heater that supplies the Ariston. Would get 5 stars but the temp adjustment is under a plastic panel, which looks like you just pry off, but actually has a small retaining screw hidden in a recess. Should be better marked as I've broken this on both units. No big deal as it still works just fine but could be better designed/marked for those of us that don't read the directions. Home Depot sent quickly and have no complaints. It's a Bosch [German] Brand but is "Made in CHINA" if that makes a difference to you.
Yes, I recommend this product.

Woked excellent as a replacement for a 40 gal electric heater that bit the dust. Way cheaper and gives us plenty of hot water for our office (two public restroom sinks). No more giant water heater taking up space in the utility closet and the water is plenty hot enough after running through 20+ft of pipe to each sink. I'd buy another one without hesitation.

The one I received was slightly different from the one pictured on the site. This is my second unit. My first lasted 5 years until it sprung a leak. But for cost and the relative ease of installation, I think it's worth it. I use it in my home for kitchen, bath and laundry hot water supply.
