8MP Camera with 12x Image Stabilized Optical Zoom and 2.5 in. Vari-angle LCD

The ultra-powerful 12x optical zoom on the PowerShot S5 IS means you'll get the shot you want with no compromise, yet that's only the beginning of what makes this camera so exciting. The S5 IS is loaded with many of Canon's latest advanced technologies including the DIGIC III Image Processor, so both still images and movies are rendered with fine detail and luminous clarity. And now ambitious photographers have even greater creative latitude thanks to an included hot shoe adapter that allows you to attach Canon Speedlite EX Series external flashes.

First, I'm stepping up to the S series, A series is still a good back up p/s camera. First of all, It's a Canon and since I'm most familiar with it's layout, menu navigation, software, etc., I can't justify getting used to another line.
Between Sony's DSC-H9 and the S5IS it's a toss up but the winner will probably go to what the buyer has been familiar with-no obvious reasons to switch to Canon except maybe the Li-ion battery in the Sony now (welcome to Canon).
The stereo sound is a plus in the Canon. mmm, maybe next time there will be a remote bluetooth mic.
but the dedicated video button is noteable.
Canon optics aren't bad- Only miss here is probably the limited wide-angle capability without the attachment. wide angle or telephoto is the main priority you are d-slr bound.
In the few days I have had this so far-I have been shooting almost exclusively looking through the EVF. I think this will provide the best power economy. The improvement in the LCD is under-rated: 2.5 inches is perfect and resolution improvement makes looking at the movies you just recorded (in stereo sound) like a camcorder.
Bottom line: Canon or Sony, okay to go with what you know but with the limitations of the CCD in non-slr cameras the optic differences matter less than the camera feel, EVF, navigation, product support, software. for me, Canon has advantages over Sony in that regard-I'm glad I'm already familiar with Canon.
Yes, I recommend this product.
