Tankless Hot Water Heater

In May of 2009 my 15 year old electric hot water heater died and I needed a replacement quick. I went to the Depot and purchased the Rheem 7.4 unit for about $1000 plus the $300 vent kit. I installed it in about 4 hours this included re-routing the pipes and electric. I also purchased the parts needed to run this off my gas grill propane tank while I waited for a propane tank to be delivered. This thing is amazing! We can take two showers and run the dishwasher and never run out of hot water.
I had an issue with this unit not turning on about a month ago and the people from Rheem sent a tech out to replaced a bad board for no charge. It would turn on if you unplugged it but if it sat it gave an error message on the remote.
My electric bill went down between $90 and $100 a month and the propane bill is no more than $30 per month. So this will pay for itself in about 3.5 years.
I would suggest this unit to anyone who is interested in saving money.

I recently purchased the Rheem Eco Sense LP tankless water heater for high altitude. Like most people, I didn't know anything about them. Let me tell you, I will never install a conventional water heater in my home again.
One feature that really appeals to me is the instant on. You open a hot water tap, and it turns on. I live in a canyon with a lot of wind and It's really nice to be able to come home without having to worry about relighting the pilot lite.
The installation was relatively easy also. I already had a LP gas water heater, so I only had to reroute the hot, cold and pressure relief valve lines to fit. The LP gas line was a simple matter of installing a slightly longer flex line.
There was a lot of confusion about the vent system. Relax. I bought the vent kit. It's a good way to go if you need to revent through a side wall or the roof. I didn't so I returned it. The unit has a standard 4" exhaust pipe. I went to the local hardware store and bought 2 single wall 90's and a vent pipe adaptor. It's tied right back into the old roof vent.
Then, I did the man thing and turned on a shower and 2 bath tubs and the same time. Plenty of hot water for the wife and kids and I. I also put my hand on the vent pipe to check for heat loss. I can hold my hand on it with the unit running. I'd say that's pretty efficient.
One thing to think about though, when the unit is running, it sounds kind of like a dryer running but not quite as loud. Ours is in the furnace room, so it's not an issue.
As a professional who has installed a lot of water heaters over the years, I am very impressed with this unit.

No, I do not recommend this product.
Never worked properly after hours of problem solving, having the propane company come out and adjust the propane, It errors continually, and its sparatic about when it works and when it doesn;t... DON"T BUY IT!

I have been using this water heater for approximately 2 yrs. with no problems. I have another building I want to replace the conventional water heater and am going to buy another of the same model tankless water heater.
Pros: Reliable, Easy to Install, No Leaks
Cons: in the summer hard to get the water cool enough

I have spent countless hours on the phone on tech support, replaced the circuit board twice, now the flow switch. . . it worked well for about 4 months. Buy another brand. These people don't deserve your business.
