Guardian 10K Generator Review

I purchased and installed a Guardian 10K generator at my home about a month ago. Now, if the power would just go out I could boast that this thing is great !! I look forward to every storm warning now with a great anticipation.
I purchased this unit online and had it delivered to my home. Online ordering was painless and the delivery was trouble free - no damage to unit. Keep in mind that it weighs about 400 lbs so it is shipped freight by truck so it takes a few days.
The wiring was not too bad - but my breaker box was on the other side of the house so the 30 ft "pigtail" that comes with the unit had to be extended - no big deal but you need a junction box and more wire (make sure it is rated properly and is the right kind for running through conduit) . The Nat Gas line involved some trenching and some special hardware (not for beginners and not sold at Home Depot) but the local plumbing store had it all. If you don't include running back and forth to the hardware store 20 times I'd say the install time was about two days.
I tested the unit by switching off the main circuit breaker and the unit fired right up and powered the 10 circuits chosen on the transfer switch. Everything worked great and no lights were flickering, the internet and computers that are hooked up worked fine as well.
So the unit works as advertised (keep in mind though that the generator is only 9 kW on natural gas... 10K on propone only). Also, before purchasing this unit, make sure that 10 emergency circuits are enough - it was for me (well pump, furnace, fridge, freezer, some lights, microwave, my big fish tank, etc). For an entry level generator this unit is great.
The only downside I didn't plan on was a gas meter upgrade. When the generator is running full tilt, your home's nat gas consumption could exceed your meter's capacity and require a larger meter/regulator from the gas company. An extra $700 solved that problem and the gas company upgraded the meter. With all that extra gas capacity I think I'll run a gas line to the grill next !!!

I have been a Virgin Islander for 53 years and living with power outages has just been a way of life. We purchased this whole house 10K propane generator and are thrilled with the quality of life it has provided.
It automatically maintains and tests itself weekly and within 60 seconds of the power going off, we are fully back on line. What luxury. We could not recommend this more highly are and in the throws of purchasing another one right now for our rental houses.
We live on St John and Home Depot dropped in off right in our front yard. Great service and delivery with a smile.
Pros: Durable, Easy to Use, All In One, Sturdy, Strong, surprisingly quiet, great value for the money

WE RECENTLY HAD A 10000 WATT GENERATOR INSTALLED. THE ELECTRICIAN TESTED IT AND EVERTHING WORKED GREAT. I AM A HANDICAPPED PERSON WHO NEEDS TO HAVE CONSTANT POWER FOR MY MEDICAL EQUIPMENT AND MY MOTHER WHO LIVES WITH US IS 94 AND ALSO NEEDS HER EQUIPMENT CONSTANTLY. THIS PAST YEAR, THE POWER WAS OUT FOR 29 HRS. AND THE YEAR BEFORE 36 HRS. BOTH OF US WERE READY TO GO TO THE EMERGENCY ROOM JUST TO GET WARM. WE NOW HAVE PEACE OF MIND THE NIGHTS OF STAYING AWAKE DURING STORMS ARE A THING OF THE PAST.

Bottom line: Buy this one.
I bought a house in New Hampshire in 2007, where the power goes out once a month and did some serious research. I have two circuits for the 220v well pump and 8 for everything else and it's great. Never failed. Only upkeep is an oil change and maintenance kit once a year ($24 total). It's a do-it-yourself job. Remember that anything smaller than this will be a one cylinder unit and anything larger will take more propane and you'll have to start worrying about coolant (this is air cooled). Figure on $800-$1k for professional installation. Make sure your installer pours a concrete pad and places the exhaust away from the building. Mine is just outside my home office and I can run it with my window open and still talk on the phone. Don't even think about running an electric range or electric dryer on this. Sucks up about a gallon an hour when running (still cheaper than a hotel room)
Just a great unit!
