This Attic ladder was delivered quickly and was easy to install. The styrofoam had to be glued to the steps, but no big deal. I love the lightweight ladder and gas cylinders.

This unit is a much needed update over the 10+ year old unit I had. It is much sturdier and smoother than the old one. Installation was fairly smooth but is DEFINITELY at least a two person job. Given the price, this unit is a great value.

The instructions were somewhat ambiguous as the installation did not go as well it could have. Squaring up the door was difficult after the nails were in. The door is too thin, as the 1/4" plywood is lightweight and lacks substance and the insulation is too little. However, the aluminum ladder is lightweight and appears to be sturdy and safe.
Yes, I recommend this product.

This ladder is only 6 weeks old and has already broken. The cylinder which is suppose to help with easier opening and closing has already broken under the pressure of less than 150 lbs. I agree with other buyer, if installation wasn't an additional cost or problem, I would have these stairs ripped out tomorrow. I guess I will wait for a month or so due to expense. Don't be the next victim. BEWARE!

this attic door is NOT USER FRIENDLY and its construction (altho rated for 350lbs) is NOT AS SOLID as i would have liked. i could not test the quality until after it was installed and i am definately UNHAPPY . if instalation cost was not a factor, i would have it uninstalled and id search for something of better quality! in conclusion, I am NOT HAPPY with this purchase...

I was able to install the ladder my self with out to much difficulty. Put 2X4 support strips at both ends of the opening to hold the ladder in the up while you square it, then bolt it in.
I like the hydraulic closing mechanism, it operates smoother and safer then a spring system. However,it remains to be seen if it will last as long as the old ladder I replaced, almost 35 years. My guess is that I will have to replace the hydraulic cylinder.
Yes, I recommend this product.

Great attic stairs for the money. I am very pleased with the sturdy stairs. Its just like going up a step ladder. You should have at least 2 people to install product. Installation is not for someone without any skills in construction. My only problem was with getting the legs cut to the right length. I was confused with the directions on how to measure for the proper amount to cut off. I did finally get it right. Also I used a little glue to secure the insulation on the door which I see where of people complain about it., No big deal. Love my pull down attic door. Gary

I searched quite a few attic ladders and this one was the only model with gas cylinders, which was a must for me. I was replacing an old, rotted, 1950's spring-powered attic ladder and did not want to go with springs again. I took the advice of the reviews here and tossed the nails. I picked up 3 inch, 1/4 diameter lag screws and washers (12 of them). Pre-drilled holes in the marks according to the instructions and power-drove the lag screws into place. I used 4 nails in the pivot plates (2 on each side) since the lag screws wouldn't fit there. This gave the ladder much better stability. Especially, considering the old ladder was supported with just 4 simple nails.
I had to install a 1x4 along each side of my frame to make the ladder fit snug. I had my wife assist with lifting the ladder up towards the attic, while I pulled on the temporary straps to lift and slide it into place. It's relatively light, especially compared to the old heavy wooden ladder. Once slid in, we made sure it was centered then screwed down the temporary straps, locking it into place. Next came the lag screws and a little insulation stuffed around the frame. Cut a miter border around the door (that was the hardest part!). Painted the outside, job done.
One tip, get a partner. Also, use short screws for the temporary straps. Mine were too long and extended out past the wood frame. I thought I would get to remove them when I took out the temporary straps after installing the ladder, but then realized the temporary straps are meant to be left there. Once installed, you can't get the screws out. I ended up having to saw them off. I also cut off the temporary straps for aesthetics.
My only complaint is the bolts on the boots were stripped. I had to buy replacements. Otherwise, straight-forward install, sturdy ladder, nice gas pistons.
Yes, I recommend this product.

The Instructions are vague, the plywood door cover is very cheap and in our case defective. While this is a cosmetic issue it is important for the over all appearance of the ladder. If installed properly the ladder seems to work smoothly. Not easily installed by a beginner. For optimum performance an occasional drop of oil on the hinges work wonders.

This is a well-designed, well-built ladder that was relatively easy to install as a replacement ladder of the same dimensions. It's a two-person job (whomever is doing it themselves must have some special equipment) with one above and one below the ladder to position it into place. The metal straps are quite helpful for temporary positioning. We bought this model for its aluminum steps and gas cylinder retraction. The insulation is a joke as mentioned elsewhere - you probably want to glue it down to the backing to keep from tripping on it. Once the ladder is installed and cut to the proper size (you need a power saw for this) it fits perfectly at 1-inch intervals. Why other models cost twice as much I do not know - we're very happy with the product.
Yes, I recommend this product.

The ladder seems to be adequate, but we were disappointed with the quality of the door, the door frame and insulation. The plywood door couldn't be any thinner and still be called wood. The insulation is pretty much a wasted effort. We would recommend it with reservations, Good ladder. Sub-par door & trim.

performs well--cosmetic issues

The ladder works great--no complaints at all on its function. However, be aware that there are a dozen or so bolt heads on the bottom (exposed part) of the door, so you won't get a perfectly flat surface there. In addition, the door arrived with a scratch down the middle. There was no damage on the box, so it's clear it left the factory that way. It's not a huge issue for us, since we'll be painting and can fill it in, but it is an annoying defect and may make a difference for other customers.
