Bought this item to replace about 15 doors for a customer and shaved about 4 hours off my time in getting them installed. This thing worked well and was very accurate. Hinges appeared factory when cut and came with everything you need. I did 15 doors with it this past week and the only issue I found was that toward the last couple doors the router bit began to dull. Overall quality of this thing is great though. Well worth a place in your tool box if you do a lot of doors.

I tried a nail-on kit from another manufacturer and was pleased with the hinge fit but didn't like the wobble or the nail mounting holes. I liked the clamping feature on the Ryobi and decided to try it. The radius is wrong and the cut is wider than the hinge, leaving you with having to wood putty the gaps and sand (and repaint). The Ryobi now moves on to Craig's List.

Cons: match of cut and hinge

This puppy works like a charm. Replaced all the doors in my house and had to cut in all the hinge plates. This gadget made the process fast and easy. Highly recommend.

After trying porter cable's door jig version, I decided to give the Ryobi's door hinge jig a try. I used it on two 1-1/2" thick oak doors and I am somewhat satisfied. I like the fact that the jig comes with a clamp which allows you to easily lock the jig in place. I used this jig to make mortises for 3-1/2" hinges. Because the router bit's guide is slightly larger in diameter than that of the actual bit, the length of the initial mortise was 1/16" too small. I had to unlock the jig, move it by 1/16" (in this case, to the left), reclamp it, and use the router again to finish the mortise. Overall, however, I am content to use this jig again.

It is made for retro-fitting doors to existing door jambs, so not having the ability to cut jamb side (as another reviewer complained about) is not a big deal in this day and age of pre-hung doors.
First off, the design is good. Adjust to a variety of hinges, clamps and unclamps quickly, and not a bad cut. However, it is not the most stable and could use more rigidness because the jig moves a bit when you put pressure on the router. It would be nice to have more clamps to secure it to the door better. I bought it in a pinch because I needed a jig that day. All in all it is not bad and does the job but it will not last for long term. My guess is that after cutting 30-50 doors, it will need to be replaced. I am gonna try to find a more solid one that lasts longer.

Cons: Not Durable, not stable

I had to return this template because it is not capable of cutting the JAMB side. It will allow you to cut the DOOR side of hinge. Don't ask me why, I don't know. I went with the Porter Cable template that does do both for about the same price. Don't think its available here. So, unless you are only planning on cutting slabs, this tool is about useless.

If you own a router don't even think of using a chisel . Was able to hang 10 doors in one day and each looked great. Comes with the router bit and has built in depth gauge , easy and fast.

I am a professional finish carpenter, and have been for...........too long. I have always cut hinge mortises with a sharp utility knife and a razor sharp chisel. I tried the Ryobi hinge template, on the recommendation of a friend. I works so well, I am embarassed to say that it does a much better job than I can do the old fashioned way. And, probably 20 times faster. If you install doors, get this tool.
Pros: Easy to Use, Accurate, great price
Cons: not as sturdy as it should be

I bought the Ryobi Door Hinge Template to do a pantry door. It is easy to use and worked very well. For the occasional project, it is perfect. Doing doors for an entire house might be a stretch however. I would buy the template again.

I bought the Ryobi product since a competing product did not work that well. The Ryobi product uses a screw-down clamp pad that extends along the length of the device and that bears against the face (front or back) of the door uniformly to secure the device in place. That makes it far, far easier and quicker to move the template from one mortisse to the next, and it keeps the device properly alinged so that the hinges ultimately line up properly. The adjustment mechanism that allows you to use the device for different sized hinges is integral to the device (in contrast to inserts); thus, there is no risk of depth variation from cut to cut due to inserts not staying flush with frame. Further still, the Ryobi template has a pair of "wells" formed in the side of the frame that you can use to set the router bit depth to make cuts for relatively thin hinges or relatively thick hinges, although the instructions leave a little to be desired in regard to how thick thin hinges are and how thick thick hinges are. All in all, very satisfied with teh product.

I read a few negative reviews on this item but bought it anyway to try it out.....JUST BUY IT! I finished 4 doors in about 30 minutes with measuring for the hinges and everything. Were the corners precise and exactly flush for every hinge? No, however they were darn close enough that this item was money well spent. I have done the outline and chisel thing before and I can say this item beats it every day of the week. Not crazy about the all plastic construction but it was sturdy, the vise was tight and did not move and the router bit that was provided was very sharp and cut extremely well. Like another reviewer added if you are a perfectionist and need everything to match up perfectly enjoy the chisel but if a little gap doesn't bother you....

I would normally but ANY OTHER BRAND before Ryobi due to past experiences, however I needed a hinge jig and this was the only one in stock. I liked the clamp-style attachment. This means I don't have to mar my door with nails or screws. The jig worked perfectly. The 4" x 4" hinges with 5/8" radius fit exactly. This jig works with square, 1/4", and 5/8" radius corners. It even comes with a router bit.
I agree with other reviewers that this jig is not infinitly adjustable, however it will work with most standard hinge sizes. It was quicker and easier than building an MDF template for hinge mortising.

I read the negative reviews but decided to try it today and installed four doors and it worked great. I installed 5/8" hings and there was a small gap but is barely noticeable.

It depends on the type of door you're preparing. But for standard interior doors 80" x 24"-34", forget it. The material is too flimsy for the work. Its big selling point is that you can clamp it into place rather than nail it, but I was able to hand-clamp a Craftsman template using the old door and a 2x4, and achieved the same result.

This template is for doors only, it will not work on the jamb. The radius corner hinges don't fit very good. We had to modify the template to get the right back spacing for the doors we were working on. I've used better templates.

Purchased and just returned. The resulting 5/8" radius cut left gaps between mortise and hinge in the corners. Very ugly. Perhaps the included bit needed differnet bearing but certainly does not work as advertised on the box or instructions. Thought maybe I had bad hinges, tried differnet hinge, same result. Don't know if the 1/4" radius cut works better
