This light is just okay. It has good color, but illuminates downward. I got these for use in a downward installed vanity
fixture, and it illuminated the counter top fine, but not the overall room. The other 40W EcoSmart LED bulbs are better, but are too bright (5000K).
No, I do not recommend this product.

I give it four stars instead of five because it could be a wee bit brighter, but it's pretty hard to find a better value. I really like the tone of the light you get from these + you can't complain about how little electricity they use. In my opinion, it represents a genuine option for replacing a 40W incandescent or a 13W CFL.

I would compare what I've experienced in order to show my deductions.
The first LED bulb I owned was a Lights of America device, still sold at Wallyworld. That first bulb emitted light only in ONE hemisphere (no light emitted toward the base of the bulb - very pronounced shadowing when that bulb is used in a common table lamp). That first light had approximately 12 LEDs, all were clearly visible through unfrosted (clear) glass. I could easily see multiple shadows when that first lamp was in use. That first lamp emitted a blueish light that was quite off putting.
Now, for my second LED lamp... the second LED bulb I purchased was this one. Several advantages make this bulb a much better experience. Light color is much more like the incandescent lighting we grew up with. Light is emitted very nicely towards the base of this second bulb and thus you wont have huge shadows under the table lamp. This second LED lamp 'glass' envelope (the bulb outer shape) is very close to traditional incandescent and is internally frosted, so there is only one diffused shadow, which is very similar to the common incandescent lamp.
This second LED lamp represents what I would have expected for a first effort at consumer grade solid state illumination.
My ratings
Plus side:
Essentially instantaneous to reach full brightness (incandescents are essentially instantaneous as are all LEDs nearly instantaneous, but CFLs are NOT instantaneous to reach full brightness - ever seen the CFL display a reddish/purplish glow?
Good light dispersion (much more like an incandescent lamp).
Appropriate color (much more like the incandescent lamp).
Appropriate bulb shape (like the incandescent lamp).
More reasonable cost (compared to other LED lamps, this is about half the cost of competing lamps).
Minus side:
Still a high cost. Incandescent lamps are still selling for well under a dollar, meaning that based on lamp purchase price, I'd expect this lamp to outlast at LEAST 25 (more like 50) incandescent lamps. I cannot determine if this or any LED lamp will live longer than even one incandescent lamp, since I've only owned this lamp for a month. I have 10 year old incandescent lamps still in active use, and my first CFL lamp lived only 33 days, so that bitter experience is still in mind and still applies to LED lamps - both are electronic ballasted designs, the electronics are the weakest link.
Uncertainties:
Temperatures. Incandescent lamps will produce light when they are turned on at -40 Fahrenheit. Most CFLs refuse to light up when temperatures drop to about +10 Fahrenheit, with very few examples of CFLs that light up at no lower than -5 Fahrenheit. Will LEDs light up and operate properly at temperatures common to New England seasonal outdoor temperatures? By 'operate properly' i mean they are to operate exactly like incandescent lamps - with no degraded longevity, no issues lighting at all temperatures I walk around in, and no loss of light output when cold. My garage is unheated so any lamps need to work inside there all year 'round; I see LED versions of floodlights, my same temperature issue applies there. This is important to me in considering the LED to be a proper replacement for incandescent lamps that I currently use. I already have 2 CFLs in unheated areas, so I cannot change to LED lamps if they do not work where I put incandescent lamps, that is a mandatory condition. Keep that in context, please.
Contentions. Not sure if Engineer made it known in his post, but there are some federal restrictions over radio frequency interference from consumer devices, we could only hope that these lamps have been designed and maybe even tested to be in accordance with FCC radiated emissions (and there are conducted emissions too, but I'm not sure if there are specified limitations specifically for electronic ballasted LED lamps). Maybe this model LED lamp is not in compliance with those regulations ... it wouldn't be the first time products sold in the USA were not within FCC guidelines. Still, if your OTHER devices are suffering from radio interference by being close to these lamps, you should separate the sensitive devices from these lamps (square law for radiated emissions).
Most modern appliances state the FCC interference allowance in the appliance user manuals. Yes, Engineer might have specific issues, but the rest of us need to know how deal with the issues.
Yes, I recommend this product.

I bought 1 today and tried it out. Was back later on and bought 3 more. 9 watts thats a 40 watt equivalent. But in my opinion I don't mind them in place of a 60, they are pretty bright in most fixtures. If you want to save some money on your electric bill these will pay for themselves fast.

I highly recommend. I get no buzzing or RF interference as others have reported. The light has a good color, not too white, not too yellow. I have there in a 4" recesssed light housing. Using it it with a Luron maestro MIR-600THW-WH and the bulbs dim nicely.

This bulb was great, we used it in a lamp on a timer in our Den. I replaced the normal 40w Incandescent with this bulb in the fall, and it has blown out already!! I unfortunately don't have my HD receipt.
I have contacted the vendor directly, I'm not sure what they're going to do. ...HD advertises 46 years :/ ...$19 every 6 months isn't going to cut it!

Just a heads up. I try to use CFL and LED where I can. I was burning out the CFL in my Chamberlain garage door opener most likely due to cold temps and the constant on/off of the motion sensor. Last week I bought two Ecosmart ECS 19s' and installed them. I liked that they used 14 Watts each and were instantly bright unlike the CFL.
Shortly after this, my wife started complaining that she couldn't get the garage door to close and that the remote key pad didn't work well either. The hard wire control by the door to the house never had a problem. I looked at replacing the batteries in the door remotes and replaced the battery in the keypad remote. Every thing worked. (The lights in the garage were out, so there was no interference.) Later I walked through the garage, the motion sensor turned on the lights and neither the keypad or door remote would work. I realized the only thing that had changed recently was the lightbulbs. I got out my ladder, pulled out the bulbs and everything works like it should.
I don't know if this is common among LED bulbs or just this brand, but there are alot of wireless items out there. How many people would think that a lightbulb would make there remote, garage door opener or any other remote controlled item fail. I plan on using the bulbs in the house but I question what effect they may have on computer wireless, cordless phone, tv remote etc...
No, I do not recommend this product.

this is rated as a 40w replacement, but I find it more comparable to a 60W it works well in an overhead fixture facing down, has a rather focused light. It might not work as well in a lamp or situation requiring more diffused light

This is a great early-generation consumer-grade LED bulb. I purchased 2 to test out in comparison to the CFLs I currently buy, and they came through with flying colors. The acquisition cost is still too high for me to replace all my CFLs, but the light output beats comparable CFLs and incandescents easily. This is rated as a 40w equivalent, but I would compare them to 60 or 100 watt bulbs in terms of visible light. I like the low cost to run, and that I don't have to wait for them to warm up. I look forward to the price of these coming down, as I really like everything except the purchase price.
Yes, I recommend this product.

Bought one 1/04/12 and I use about 8 hours a day and it is still going. I use it as a desk lamp and it is plenty bright. After it was brought to my attention through the reviews yes it causes RFI on an AM radio. I will try in a garage door opener soon. I believe energy saving lights should be used more than 3 hours a day as they recommend for better savings.
Pros: Easy Installation, looks like 40 watts to me.

I do not recommend this (or other) LED bulbs until the quality comes up and price goes down. I bought one of these bulbs for around $10 to use on our back porch because our climate is too cold for using CFLs outdoors (that is, if you are going to be switching them on and off). This bulb was supposed to last "23 years", but it died in one week.
Do the math on LEDs vs CFL. If your application is indoors, without a dimmer switch, it makes absolutely NO economic sense to be running LED bulbs when a CFL will work. CFLs are a fraction of the cost, and I consistantly get 5 years out of them. On the other hand, I've had a number of expensive LEDs fail -- most within a week or two of purchase.
Consider the costs -- with a 60W equivalent CFL you use only one to two more watts than a 60W equiv LED. Yet the CFL costs a fraction of the LEDs. I know some folks almost get religious with their zeal to be "green", but many of us are discovering that MONEY is a resource too!
Pros: Easy to Use
Cons: Burns Out
No, I do not recommend this product.

I ordered these bulbs because I wanted to pass inspection without having to get the florescent bulbs. I also heard that my company might be in this bulb and my design might be in the chip that is in the bulb (it's not). This bulb dims white, not yellow, like incandescent. It's brighter than a 40 watt bulb. I've only used one of the bulbs so far since the remodel is not complete. But the bulb works, so far, with my Lutron IR dimmer with 3 other incandescent bulbs. I'm happy with the bulb. My only complaint, not fault of the bulb, CARRY THE BULB IN STORES!!!!! so I don't have to pay shipping.

I like the bulbs that work. I wish they came in higher equivalent wattage ratings, but 40 Watt equivalent is OK for a lot of things. Overall I like the color temperature.
I don't like the fact that they are frequently no in stock at my local store.
I am a little concerned about how long the bulbs will last. I have purchased 20 in the last 3 months, and of those 14 have been in service for over 1 month. 18 work without problem, at least so far, but of the 1st 14 I purchased one produces a prominent buzz when it is on, and 1 other has completely failed. That means 2 of the 1st 14 bulbs have problems, which I think is a poor result.
Yes, I recommend this product.

At first I bought 1 bulb thinking that it wouldn't be very bright, and it only cost 18 bucks, so that would be a lesson learned. I took it home and put it in the hallway ceiling light. It was as bright, but a softer light than the CFL that i replaced. I went back that day and bought 3 more. Every payday, I bought 3 and now I only have 3 more bulbs to replace and my whole house is LED, my electric bill so far is down 62 dollars a month. would I recommend this to my family and friends? YES

This is the best general purpose, Edison-base LED bulb I have yet encountered. The lumen output is great. My Kill-A-Watt flickered between 6 and 7 watts, lower than spec'ed. It really is an appropriate replacement for a 40 watt bulb - we had two 40 watt incandescents in a bathroom, and the light output of these was entirely reasonable. Cooler spectrum, yes, and the output is biased away from the base, but they would work fine.
EXCEPT - apparently these put out enough electromagnetic noise they killed reception (over-the-air via antenna) of our local FOX affiliate. It certainly was not all channels, and most of you probably have cable or satellite, but it could be an issue for some. Sooooooooo disappointed!
Yes, I recommend this product.
