30 Amp 10 Circuit Manual Transfer Switch Kit

This 10-circuit, 30 Amp manual transfer switch kit includes everything needed to make a professional transfer switch installation (indoors) in a home, office or small business. It is completely pre-wired and designed for fast installation. The transfer switch enables the electrical system of the building to accept the power of a portable generator to run up to ten single-pole circuits or six single-pole circuits and two 20A double pole circuits. It allows you to power electrical appliances, devices and lighting during a power outage. This transfer switch is completely code compliant and keeps the generator power isolated from the utility power at all times.

I purchased this item for use with a large 7500 watt portable generator. This kit came with the 10 circuit transfer switch, a 30 amp cord, the 30 amp power inlet box & an instilation CD (which I didn't even need because the paper instructions were crisp & clear!). All you need is a little of planning ahead of time. Planning out which circuits you will need, calculating the wattage and calling your electrical inspector as to find out if you will need conduit for the 10-3 from the switch to the inlet box outside (which was needed for me). Don't forget your electrical duct conduit seal!
All the branches of red and black wires were labeled VERY clearly...A thru J. Can't go wrong.
I did, however, encounter a small problem which required somewhat quick thinking. I used a 1" KO at the bottom of my panel and fed the plethera of red, black, white & green wires thru. My 200 amp panel breakers were all at the TOP of my panel and the red transfer switch wires were not long enough to reach them. Luckily I had 10 new breakers on hand, so I just pulled the old ones and put the new breakers at the bottom of the pannel so that the red transfer wires could all reach the proper breakers. After that, A-J went quickly.
The 10-3 wire in conduit was easy to run thru any of the 3 available KO's to any of the 4 KO's on the power inlet box mounted outside. Duct seal, conduit and exterior screws completed the install.
Afterall, I am very satisified with the product. I am also glad that I got this 10 circuit item vs the 6 circuit one. 3 various lighting circuits, furnace, sump pump, 2 TV circuits, internet and 2 refrigerators. Took the handle ties off so the two 20amp double poles are now two single poles. Had no use for double pole circuits in my case.
As for the item itself...the metal box was not damaged; wires were not frayed at all; nothing bent; overall very sturdy product. I am not an electrician so install, testing & clean-up took roughly 5 hours...and I took my time.
Next hurricane/superstorm I will be ready, thanks to Reliance!
Pros: Easy to Use, All In One, Sturdy, Durable, Long-Lasting, good shipping protection. two boxes & cushoning.
Yes, I recommend this product.

The transfer switch is very solid and weighty. The construction seems very good and they didn't skimp. The lengths of the wires were good, I had to cut most of them down to size and none were too short. The written instructions are very easy to understand which is a rarity these days. The included DVD was excellent, it showed every step involved in the installation. The video should spend a little more time on the dangers of working in an open electrical panel even when the main breaker is off, you can kill yourself instantly if you make the wrong mistake. You can find this video on the company's website if you want to see what in involved before buying it.
With this transfer switch you cannot change the circuit breakers. You get six single pole 15 amp and four single pole 20 amp circuits. You can connect two of the 20 amp or two of the 15 amp switches if you want to power a double pole circuit. If the six 15A and four 20A circuits fit the needs of the circuits that you want to power then this switch is good for you. If you need more or less of the 15A or 20A circuits then you should get a different transfer switch that allows you to customize the breakers. Also keep in mind that the 30A rating on this transfer switch does not mean that there is a 30A circuit in the switch. It just means that the transfer switch can handle 7500 watts of power (if your generator has a 30A outlet then it will work with this switch).
The watt meters in this switch are very small and are hard to read. It will give you a general idea of the power consumption but I don't think they are very precise. Their most important function is to tell you if you are balancing the power load on each side of the switch (circuits A-E are on the left side and F-J are on the right). If you really want to know how much power your appliances are consuming, get a handheld watt meter. If you use the handheld watt meter around your house before you buy a generator it will give you a good idea of how much power you need and it will help you get the right size generator.
The 10ft. Cord was too short for my needs since my power inlet box is close to some windows. I ordered a longer one. If your inlet box isn't near a door or window then 10 feet might be fine but I would guess that most people would want a longer length of cord. I would have paid more for a kit that came with a longer one. Keep security in mind also, you might want to have you generator near something that you can lock it to so it doesn't disappear when you need it most and what you lock it to might not be next to the inlet box.
You will need to buy some 10AWG or 8AWG building wire to attach the transfer switch to the inlet box. 10AWG wire is orange, 8AWG is black. You need to buy 4 fasteners (wood screws or masonry) to attach the transfer switch to the wall and 3 fasteners to attach the inlet box to the outside of your home. You also need 2 wire clamps, one to attach the building wire to the knockout in the transfer switch and another for the knockout in the inlet box. You will probably also need some clamps to attach the building wire to the walls and/or ceilings when running it from the transfer switch to the inlet. Depending on your municipality and where you run the building wire, you may also need conduit.
Overall this is a very good transfer switch. I could have ordered it from an online-only store and not paid tax but I didn't want to ship it back if there was a problem. By ordering it online from Home Depot I knew I could return it to my local store. The online price at Home Depot was very competitive anyway. Home Depot delivered it quickly despite being backordered. Installation was very easy and my transfer switch works. I am very satisfied with the purchasing experience and the product. When the next power outage hits, the party is at my house.
Pros: Easy to Use, All In One, Sturdy, fast delivery
Cons: can't swap 15a and 20a circuits
Yes, I recommend this product.

So it turns out I had to wait a while (like a good majority of you, after Sandy) to get a hold of this device. I ordered a 10-circuit kit (for a 8000W generator) and a transfer switch by itself for a 10kW unit. First I mounted the unit on a plywood panel (relatively easy to do) and then I did all the wiring myself. I have never done any electrical installation myself, so that being said, the accompanying installation info, and the DVD was a great help. Also, there are other detailed installation videos on YouTube which can be referred to. A few pics of the 8000W unit installation is included herein. After installation, I had an electrician look at the installation and certified that it was done correctly.
I highly recommend this product for the quality, and price.
Pros: Easy to Use, first timers can do this, detailed info in installation

The transfer switch was an easy project that takes a couple hours to install and some labor to pull wire to the included outdoor generator plug. I ordered the flush mount kit. The instructions were wrong. It calls for a 10x17 hole in the wall. 10 inches is too wide. I had to make a shim to get the thing installed. Cut your hole no wider than 9 inches. Wires were long enough but since I powered two boxes I could have used a bit more in a couple instances. I think we are ready for spring.
Pros: Easy to Use, All In One
Cons: flush mount kit instructions wrong
Yes, I recommend this product.

Fairly easy to install if you're handy. I wouldn't describe it as "fast" though. There are obviously alot of wires to manage with 10 circuits. As well as conduit and wire for the remote inlet. I would estimate it took me 5 hours which included time running 50ft of conduit, pulling supply wire, figuring out which circuits I wanted to supply from the generator, connecting all of those circuits, and filing 1/8" off my panel's front cover to accomodate the metallic inlet conduit.
Yes, I recommend this product.

After purchasing my house the first thing I did was to setup my electrical system in case of power outages. I got estimates from local electricians and it was between $900 and $1100. After reading several other reviews stating how easy it was to install I decided to purchase it and give it a try.
The most important part is the planning, I took the time to out through each circuit to determine the load (the supplied work sheet helps with this) then created an excel spreadsheet that stated each circuit number on the main pannel to the circuit letter on the transfer switch along with the load and location. Using tape I then assigned each letter to the actuall circuit.
Once that was done, making the connections was quick and easy. Took less than an hour, and I checked each wire 2 or more times to be safe. I was quickly able to test the generator on the system and it worked flawlessly.
This weekend SANDY came roaring in and I was able to setup the generator in just minutes and waited it out knowing my family would be safe.
Pros: Easy to Use, Sturdy
Yes, I recommend this product.

Nice setup and easy to install with pretty much everything you need for the complete installation. The one fault is that you'll find some leads are too short to reach some breakers, so have some extra wire for splicing, you'll probably need it.

After reading reviews on the Reliance transfer switch and some of the competitor's products, I decided to purchase the Reliance transfer switch, and I was not disappointed.
I liked the fact that this was a kit that has everything you need. The only exception is the building wire to run between the transfer switch and the power inlet box. In my case, the breaker box is located in the rear of my garage, so I needed about 30 feet of cable to wire up the power inlet box where the generator gets plugged in.
Documentation was excellent. In addition to printed documentation, there is also a very helpful video that is both on DVD as well as online.
I did have a question, and found the Tech Support folks at Reliance to be extremely knowledgeable. They promptly answered the phone, understood the issue, and offered helpful guidance.
One extra is that the transfer switch comes equipped for six 15A circuits and four 20A circuits. I wanted to use seven 15A circuits and three 20A circuits...one call to Customer Service, and they sent me an additional 15A breaker that I could do an even exchange for the 20A breaker.
My only comment is that the transfer switch is surface mount, and I have a recessed breaker box. It was not clear how to route the conduit between the boxes in this configuration. I was able to get a solution from Tech Support, but perhaps this can be added to the documentation.
I would definitely recommend this product for anyone who has a portable generator for their home. This is SO much better than tripping over extension cords running through the hallways.
Pros: All In One, complete kit, good installation instructions
Yes, I recommend this product.

I installed this after hurricane Irene last year, when sandy came this year, I plugged the cable into the generator and the receptacle, flipped a few switches and lit up the whole house while others maxed out their extension cords and generator outlets mine was just plug and play. I found other places had rediculously high prices while home depot was the cheapest. Reasonably simple to install prob from 1-5 for difficulty with 5 being the most difficult, I'd rate it at 2 for difficulty
Pros: All In One
Cons: the included 10' cable should be longer

I purchased this outstanding transfer switch from Home Depot (online) because HD had the lowest price and it was in stock and ready to ship! Shipping took just three days to my address!!- superb!
What's in the box:
You will receive a pre-wired 10 circuit transfer switch with a long enough pig-tail to mount it next to your existing control center (breaker panel), a 10ft 30amp extension cord for your 120/240 volt generator outlet, 4 red wire connectors and 10 yellow wire connectors, a demonstrative DVD and a printed installation and operating instructions manual. You'll also find a 30amp remote inlet box to mount inside or outside your home and a 20amp adaptor plug to use for generators up to 5000 watts. The transfer switch includes two watt meters so you can monitor your watt usage per side to ensure equal power balance.
What else will I need for installation:
You will need a length of 10 gauge building wire (4 wires total w/ground) long enough to run from your remote inlet box location to your transfer switch, and possibly conduit to run the building wire through (depending on your local code).
What tools will I need:
You will need a drill with small boring bits or hole saw (if you're mounting your remote inlet box outside), masonry drill bits and screws (if mounting your transfer switch and or inlet box on concrete or masonry walls), wire cutters, wire strippers or utility knife, hammer, phillips and standard screw drivers (depending on mounting screws), white tape to write on (identifying desired circuits), circuit tester, flashlight, plastic wall anchors and screws (if you're mounting your switch or inlet box on drywall). You may also wish to have a tube of caulk and caulking gun handy if you're mounting your inlet box outside. Caulking around the hole you drilled in your exterior wall to run your wire through before you mount your inlet box will help keep the weather and bugs out.
How long will installation take:
This depends on your abilities. It took me a little over an hour from start to finish with testing the system. I have electrical experience, but anyone with even basic electrical knowledge can do this installation. Worst case scenario; set aside about three to four hours for installation including circuit mapping.
Note: mapping is simply a method of determining which circuits you want to run and how to best balance them for optimal and equal power (load) between the two sides of your transfer switch.
How difficult is the installation:
On a scale of one to ten, I would say about a three or four. The instructions and included demonstrative DVD video are straight forward and easy to comprehend. The wires from the transfer switch are all well marked and legible. The most difficult part is determining what circuits are vital to you during a power outage as you only have ten to divvy up. Once you read the instructions, you will see that the installation will be about as simple and fool-proof as you can get.
How does this transfer switch work (for the layman):
Here is an example of just one typically wired transfer circuit: A circuit that runs your refrigerator is supplied power by a breaker in your main panel. A wire comes off that breaker, feeds through the wall to the outlet that you plug your refrigerator into. When you use this transfer switch, you will remove the black wire from the refrigerator's supply breaker in your main panel and replace it with one of the marked red wires from the transfer switch panel. Then, tie the black wire you just removed from that breaker to the similarly marked black wire from the transfer switch (if you put a red wire marked "A" from the transfer switch into the refrigerator's breaker, you will connect the wire you removed from that breaker to the black wire also marked "A" from the transfer switch). When you are running power off of the grid, the breaker on your transfer switch will be switched to the "line" position, meaning, your transfer switch is merely acting like a bridge, allowing the grid power to pass from the breaker in your main panel, through the transfer switch, and into the circuit that feeds your refrigerator. In a power outage, you will plug your generator into the transfer switch via the 120/240 volt extension cord and start it up (allow it to warm up for a minute or two). You will then go to your transfer switch panel and move the circuit breaker that feeds your refrigerator from the "line" position to the "Gen" position. When you do this, you are disconnecting the line between your main panel's breaker and the transfer switch, which breaks the circuit to your refrigerator. At the same time, you are simultaneously connecting the line from your generator through your transfer switch to your refrigerator, completing the circuit and restoring power. The transfer switch, when running off your generator, blocks the passage of electricity to your main panel by simply bypassing it... This is why you DO NOT have to shut off any breakers in your main panel, including the MAIN breaker. This makes running your home off of your generator not only safe for you, your appliances and your generator in eliminating any accidental overloading of circuits, but it also protects any linemen who may be working on the power lines from possible electrocution from YOUR generator due to backfeeding.
What can I run with this transfer switch:
This is dependent on the output of your generator. In my situation, I have a 5500/6500 watt max portable generator that easily runs a refrigerator, small chest freezer, gas stove/oven with digital readout, well pump, furnace, ½ hp garage door opener, washing machine, computer network and internet, televisions, cable boxes and almost all of our low watt lighting. Bare in mind that these items must be divided up equally, based on wattage consumption, between the two sides of the transfer switch and that it is very unlikely that these items will ever be operating all at once.
How do I know, and what do I do when the power comes back on:
Leaving a light turned on and plugged into an outlet that is not fed through the transfer switch is the best notification method of main power restoration that I have found (even if you have to run an extension cord from the dead outlet and put the light in your bedroom at night). When that one light comes on, you'll know you can go to your transfer switch panel and move all the switches from "Gen" back to "Line", turn off the generator, unplug the extension cord and put everything away - and wait for the next outage. It's that simple! Just a flip of a few switches on your transfer panel and you're back on the grid. No need to even open the main panel's door.
Obvious info:
Though it's wise to have a flashlight handy during installation, the instructions tell you to power down your main panel by shutting off the MAIN breaker before removing the cover, and from then on, you'll need a flashlight to work by... Well, not necessarily. Obviously, you have a generator - right? Why not use it to power a work light to brighten your circuit panel and work area? That's what I did, and it worked perfectly. It will also power your plug-in drill if you do not have a cordless one.
One final note:
Owning this transfer switch to power your home in an outage can result in unexpected guests if you're the only home in your neighborhood with power. This can be a good thing or a bad thing, depending on how you look at it! In a power outage, we have been known to have as many as eight to ten guests seeking lights, televisions and working toilets (we all have well pumps and septic tanks). We consider this a good thing as it turns a power outage into a party!! :)
I highly recommend this top quality transfer switch from Reliance Controls and sold by Home Depot (online) for price, ease of installation, and the peace-of-mind it gives you during any power outage.
Yes, I recommend this product.

I had an electrician install this for me while he was upgrading my electric service from 100amp to 200 amp. This kit comes with an outdoor power connector which would be a bit of work to install if lacking such experience. However, I would only recommend using an outdoor power connector. By installing the power connector on the inside, will need to find a way of connecting the generator power cord to the switch. An open window might have to be used. The actual wiring of the transfer switch breakers to the service panel is very easy. I would recommend this device to anyone. I am so happy I do not have to use extension cords anymore.
Yes, I recommend this product.

This manual transfer switch kit comes with everything you need to get set up and going. The directions are clear and easy to follow and guide you through the process from planning to installing to operating. The quality of the workmanship and the materials is outstanding. All you need is confidence in your ability to follow directions. Tech support is available and helpful.
Some suggestions for do-it-yourselfers like me:
1. If you need to drill through concrete blocks to install the power inlet, long masonry drill bits are the way to go. Buy one.
2. When removing the "knockout" in the service panel to attach the feed from the transfer switch, the wrong size knockout came out (too big). Not to worry- there is a "donut" available to fill the space and securely attach the connector to the service panel.
Yes, I recommend this product.

Overall, the video was helpful along with some reading online. Note that you lose the gfci function of your circuits when running the switch. It does says this in the manual. However, you will still have power to them. I got concerned when I first tested it out and the afci breakers tripped. However, you will still get power from the generator. Now, I have a good backup option to power my home essentials. As a reference, I paired mine with a Northern Tool Powerhouse 9000 generator and had no issues running all 10 circuits. Microwave, lights, garage door openers, central heat, fridge and freezer. It seemed to max out at 5KW.
Pros: Sturdy, Strong, Long-Lasting
Cons: no ability for gfci
Yes, I recommend this product.

This is a heavy duty state of the art product and is well thought out for the home installer. The internal wiring are all marked to the correct corresponding transfer switches for flawless hookup. Here are some of my issues I'll share in hopes it assists someone else.
1. This takes two people to install to minimize frustration. The box itself is heavy and you will need someone else holding it up while you size up the conduit length to your electrical panel. Also, another person is helpful in drilling the holes for mounting, etc.
2. Watch the installation DVD at least twice, so you know exactly how everything works. It is simple and easy, but you MUST follow the instructions exactly. I watched the DVD once and then read the manual once. On the day of installation, I watched the DVD again and read the manual again, and this prevented memory loss and a smooth operation.
3. The actual wiring of the switch to your chosen panel breakers is very simple and easy. However, the hard part is the installation itself of the physical components depending on your particular layout. I.e., my power panel is inset between two garage beams and is small, it was hard to work inside of it because there are a lot of wires and jumpers with this kit.
4. Pre-planing is essential. Take the time to assess your genny load and figure out what circuits you want on what side of the load. Write all of this out. Believe me, write it down as a guideline to yourself. Mark the circuits you will be tapping into prior to removing the panel cover so you know exactly what circuits to work with. The manual has some load examples and wattage charts to use as guidelines.
5. You will need to buy 10/3 gauge contraction wire with ground to connect the transfer switch to the power inlet box supplied with this kit. Home Depot has this wire in 15' and more pre-packaged units for about $25.
6. I bought some extra (large accommodating) wire nuts that came in handy when tapping some of these larger wires together.
I am not an electrician, but I am comfortable turning off my main power supply, and removing the front panel of my electrical panel, and removing wires connecting my circuit breakers. This project took me about 2.5 hours taking my time with the assistance of my wife. I hooked up the genny to the power outlet box and everything fired up and worked like a champ the first time out. Again, pre-plan your project.
Hook-up: I have a 220 well pump on the switches double pole 20 amp switch, I made the other double pole 20 amp switch into two single poles, which run my refrigerator and kitchen microwave, I used the remaining 15 amp single poles to run an office receptacles, lights, etc., and run bathroom lights and TV with DVD connected to wall receptacles. I used 8 out of the 10 transfer switches and left two as spares for future use if needed. I use a 7500/9500 Champion genny to power this with ease.
Yes, I recommend this product.

This unit is a very reliable way of isolating your generator from your electric company service. In an outage, they state that there is no way to backfeed the main service to hurt anyone.
Pros: Easy to Use, All In One, Good Size & Weight
Cons: switches not heavy duty
Yes, I recommend this product.
