I did a bit of research before buying this one and am glad I did. I had the store assemble it for me, so no issues there. The pan that separates the flame from the cooking surface makes it easy to clean and gives it the ability to add wood chips for smoking. The coated cast iron grates cook evenly and makes nice grill marks. My first attempt at 1 inch thick veal chops made me look like an Iron Chef. This model is much better than the one that replaces it, so, get one while they are still available. Oh, and invest in a cover. You are going to want to keep this one a while.

This is the first "real" grill that I've ever owned, and I'm very happy with my purchase. It seems very well built, and cooks food amazingly. I've slow-smoked pulled pork to perfection, and seared a 3" filet to an amazing medium rare that's restaurant quality. The drawer space is very convenient, and I love having the light under the hood. All in all, I couldn't be happier with this purchase.

To my surprise was the size of the box it came in. Unpacking it wasn't a problem except for all the boxes.
After putting the grill together which was 3 and a half hours later I noticed on the instruction booklet a statement that assmbly time should be about 30 minutes. My wife and I got a good laugh out of this. One of the problems that was time consuming was putting the self-tapping screw in their proper place. Don't know how many times times I cursed putting these screws in.
We do have a question about cleaning the stainless steel, on the edge near the grill plates we got some burnt grease or something like it that is caked on pretty good. What product would you recommend to remove this?
We are satisfied with the way this grill cooks everything.
Yes, I recommend this product.

this grill was my second purchase. My first purchase was a Master grill that. I used that grill one time and took it back because it was horrible. I saw the reviews on this grill and bought it. I cooked 6 2in thick steaks and man let me tell you it cooked all 6 in 10 min to perfection. I am talking medium rare Beautiful pink inside the meat. The grill marks were even and looked great with no burn marks on the meat. clean up was a breeze with the self cleaning on this Grill. I Grill alot and this grill beat every expectation. Everyone needs this grill it will make you a matster cook on the grill love it.

I have no issues with the quality of the grill outside a drawer that is a little sticky.
I was new to infrared grills. As many people have noted, there are not flare ups and it is difficult to burn food. People say the element gets really hot, but this has not been my experience compared to direct gas flame. The element takes a really long time to preheat--15-20 minutes at least. If you want to do a quick burger, this is a real hassle. It is also impossible (in my hands at least) to get a charred exterior. If you do not care for that seared flavor, this grill actually does a very good job of heating up without drying out meat. If I would need a new grill I would get direct flame, but everyone else in my family prefers this, so I suppose it comes down to personal taste.
The side burner is great, and a good way to avoid heating up the house in the summer when the AC is running.
Yes, I recommend this product.

I compared this grill with the commercial version of the Charbroil sold at other retailors and found the HD Red (This version is sold exclusively at Home Depot) to be a better built, higher end grill. I purchased online for instore pickup and it was ready as soon as I arrived. You will need two people to load/unload the box. Assembly was fairly easy with a book of pictures and no words. It took me about 2.5 hours to complete. Someone with smaller hands would have been able to cut at least 30 minutes off that time frame. The book also failed to mention that when you place the fire box down to make sure you have the ignitor wires in place. I had to start over there as well.
Overall this is a well built grill. The stand itself is the only negative to construction as this is not stainless steel but instead painted metal. I can see how some users have had rust problems, but think if you rountinely inspect the stand you can do preventative maintenance here and avoid any problems. The fire box, drawers, door and side trays are all stainless and well built. The burners have a lifetime warranty and the grates are quite solid. I think they may be manufactured by Vermont Castings but they do not advertise that. Overall I would say it is a solid construction.
Cooking on the grill is a lot of fun. The grill heats up quickly and gets very hot. I love the sizzle when the meat hits the grate and the as the juices hit the trough. The flavor of everything I have cooked has been excellent. I have not had a single flare up (even with marinades) and when the juice hits the trough it is incenerated adding a nice smoke flavor to the meat much like charcoal. When you are done cleanup is very fast and easy. I spend about two -three minutes post burnoff with a brush on grates and troughs and then dump the ash. About every three to four times I reseason the grill and it only takes an additional couple of minutes prior to heating the grill.
My only negatives are the following: The stand should have been stainless throughout for durability. I guess they had to save somewhere for the price, but I would have paid a little extra if this was an option. The warming tray is stationary. While this doesn't bother me since I don't use that tray, I can see how some folks would want it to move with the lid. It is very easy to add/remove if you don't use it often. Finally, when your LP tank is low on gas and pressure drops, the burners loose pressure and it doesn't get up to high temperatures. My previous grill would cook full steam and then shut off when the tank was out. Either the Red drops off when pressure is low or it gets the last of your gas out of the tank on low burn. I don't know which, but if you cut off two burners the other two get higher temps, so there is a workaround.
Overall I am very pleased with the quality of construction and cooking for such a well priced grill.
Yes, I recommend this product.

Still $299 in the store. Easy to put together and other reviews are accurate insofar as the time it takes, about 4 hrs. One minor little gripe - The knobs are slanted in such a way that it makes you think that the low end of the knob is the pointer. It isn't, it's the high end. But at second glance you notice that the high end points to the OFF position. Strongly recommend that you follow first burn in instructions by using Canola or Peanut Oil to coat the U's inside and out and burn at the "clean" or "sear" setting until the smoke subsides. Doing this every now and then will prevent rusting and corrosion. Once together it's pretty much a solid unit, not flimsy as in some reviews. Just bought a new one, gave the old one to my Son.
Yes, I recommend this product.

After ordering this grill while it was on sale in the off-season for $299, it arrived at my house very quickly. The box was huge and weighed 200 pounds. Once I dug in, I quickly saw why the grill weighed so much, the construction of this thing is very sturdy and durable steel, not like those cheapo grills that have 1/16" thick sheetmetal construction. After completing the fairly simple construction of it, it stood solid as a rock in all its shining glory. This is my first shot at an infrared grill, but after a few cookouts on it, I believe I have the method down and the meat and veggies on it seem to keep their flavor and juiciness quite a bit more that open flame grills. If you are looking for a great product, look no further. I love the stainless steel and the fact that it has two storage drawers is a major plus!
Yes, I recommend this product.

I bought this grill on sale at my local Home Depot for $299 without having done ANY research on it, this is not something i do, ever. But for this size grill with any type of stainless and any type of closed flame cooking system, it is an absolute STEAL at $299. After having used it for a month (grilling 2-4 times per week) i would pay the current price of $500...
PROS:
1. Looks nice, looks expensive= Makes the neighbors jealous without breaking the bank
2. Very large cooking area with NO cold spots, very even cooking on all surfaces=good for entertaining
3. "Infrared" cooking system is legit, i have grilled everything from a 25lb pot roast to filet min yong, to 3" thick rib eye steaks, to frozen pizza.. The temperature control is amazing, no open flames=no loss of juiciness, you have to try it to believe it. I have owned many different types of grills, including a Big Green Egg, this is my favorite cooking system to date, no question about it. Not to mention it keeps 99% of the food you are cooking off of the stainless burners, they will last MUCH longer this way.
4. Uses less gas than previous grills ive owned.. Char Broil claims it to be more efficient, and i believe it, i expected the tank to be gone by now with how much i have grilled. My gauge is saying the 20lb tank is still a little over a quarter full.
5. Stainless construction, looks nice, lasts longer.. As noted in other reviews the whole grill is not made of stainless, this should be expected for any grill under $500, or in my case, under $300. That being said, if you take good care of it and keep it covered/stored indoors, i see it lasting a long time.
6. Solid warranty for a budget grill, seems like they stand behind their products.. I spoke with a rep on the phone about some concerns, mostly regarding the U-shaped trays rusting out, which seems to be the most common complaint with this grill. The rep told me to call on the first sign of rust and they would gladly send me a new set no questions asked within the first year. I figure i will just contact them either way before the end of the first year to have an extra set around. When i called in i spoke to a real person within 1 minute. At this point i have no fears about the customer service. That being said, i clean and season the trays with peanut oil each time i use it, no sign of rust or flaking of the black coating at this point.
7. This is sort of part of the cooking system, but i find that this grill cooks FAST. When i give it a full 15 minute warmup it maxes out the thermometer.. My secondary thermometer that i set right on the cooking grates has read as high as 850*F, wonderful for searing steaks or flash cooking other thick pieces of meat. Obviously there are situations where fast cooking is not desired, but when you want to grill up a steak or thick burger quick, this grill can do it with the best of them.
CONS:
1. I bought an assembled floor model that had never been on the floor.. that being said, i looked at the assembly instructions, does not look like much fun. Alot of other reviewers say it is alot of work and i believe it. Ask your local home depot for an assembled model if that is not something you want to do, from what they told me, they are always willing to sell assembled models at no extra charge.
2. Construction is not super heavy. Do not expect a Webber quality grill here (this grill would be well over $1000 if it was a Webber). The stainless is light and the chassis has some flex to it, some of the stainless has gotten a hot/smoky looking haze to it, and it does not come off with my normal light cleaning methods. To me it adds character, to others it may be offensive.. That being said, i do still believe it will hold up great with proper care.
3. For some reason i find that meat sticks to the cooking grates more than other grills i have used.. maybe its because the grill gets so hot, im not sure. But i find myself needing to baste most cuts with peanut oil (not a bad idea anyway) to keep them from getting very struck to the grates. Maybe i clean the grates too much, if i let some gunk build up on them i suppose not as much would stick.
Overall i love this grill, i suppose time will tell about its durability and longevity, if i find these areas to be an issue i will update this review within the next year or two. If i even get 4 years out of it i will be happy considering the $299 price tag i paid, though i expect to get more.

I have had the previous model of this (with auto-clean feature)for 18 months. I live miles from the salt water, am not on a waterfront property, and have no other serious rust problems with this grill. I use it often and clean the troughs frequently of ash and such.
I love all sorts of things about this grill, but it's a pricey item in the long run. My "troughs" (which emit the infrared heat) are both rusted through and NOT covered by warranty. It will cost me about One Hundred bucks to replace them. To some this may seem reasonable, but to me it is a material or design failure. I went ahead and replaced them - or at least ordered them so I can use it again and they are backordered - this once, then I shop for another brand. Wonder why they'd be backordered, as the forums at CharBroil contain many references to this issue. VERY disappointed. Seems designs to last the length of the warranty!
No, I do not recommend this product.

The grill will take some time to assemble. However the grill is very good for the price. The cooking features are excellent. The home depot by my house had it at years end close out for 299.00( not a bad deal). I'm looking foward to many years of service from this grill as I have in the past with other Charbroil products.

This grill cooks differently than any other I've encountered. Steaks, burgers & chicken turn out juicy and tender. It does not char or dry out meats like a typical grill. I converted mine to natural gas, so my one complaint is that it takes awhile to heat up. Cleaning is not fun - but guess that's the same as any other grill.

Fantastic grill, despite challenging assembly

I'm no stranger to assembling grills and all manner of other items needing assembly, but I found the assembly of this grill quite challenging. I initially scoffed at the 3 1/2 to 4 hour assembly time that others reported -- but, indeed, it took me 3 1/2 hours to put the thing together (primarily by myself, but with a helper to put the grill onto the stand). Read all helpful hints that others have posted in regards to grill assembly -- particularly the one that advises to release the ignition wires before placing the grill on the stand.
That stated, the grill is fantastic at cooking all manner of things -- from vegetables to meat to fish -- and it took no time to learn the nuances of grilling with the infrared cooking. I absolutely recommend this grill -- but buy one already assembled if you possibly can.
