I am not one for writing reviews but this toilet deserves a review. After years of having toilets that plug at even the slightest amount of toilet paper or "you know what", I finally have a toilet that flushes. I don't remember as a child ever having problems with toilets. I think they were made better then. I think it's a bit silly that they advertise this toilet to flush a bucket of golf balls, however, it is ultimately what hooked me into buying it. We are amazed at the flushing ability and love the slow closing lid. We have had this toilet for about a month and have not had any problems.

I'm a plumber and have purchased two Champion toilets. The first was converted from the older Champion to the Champion 4 mechanism. The second was purchased as a Champion 4 from HD. You cannot clog this toilet! Unlike air assisted toilets from other manufacturers, this toilet is very, very quiet. The flushing mechanism, combined with the industry's largest trap flush hard and fast without waking anyone up. However, there are 3 downsides to this toilet. First, all American Standard toilets have 2 problems: There is blue mold release that needs to be wiped off from the bottom of the tank before you bolt it on, or your tank will sweat and the blue will drip on your tile/floor and is impossible to get out. Second, bolting up the tank is tricky. American Standard toilets have a gasket that will not crush down to make the tank completely solid and wobble free. After about 6 months, you can tighten the bolts a little more and cinch it up better. However, be careful not to overtighten and end up with cracked porcelein. The last downside is the fact that this is a proprietary flushing mechanism, so parts aren't readily available at your local HD. I believe they have the main silicone gasket in stock, and the only other replacement part you'd need is a generic o-ring at the top. But, if something more major broke, you'll have to order parts from somewhere else. Most toilets use generic flapper designs and can easily be completely replaced. Not this one, but the flushing mechanism is what makes this toilet so special. I bet you can flush an entire dirty diaper with this toilet and not clog it! Also, the porcelein casting is high quality. Quality just oozes from this product. My only complaint about the quality is that the standard Champion 4 has a rather cheap flush handle. Other styles of this toilet have a better made flush handle.

Skeptical at first but bought it anyway. Am so very happy. Installation was super easy since tank parts are pre-installed. It is very, very quite when it flushes and removes waste super fast. Tank refill is barely audible. The self closing seat is really neat. Plan to buy more for our 3 1/2 BR home.

A Home Depot (HD) employee, a manager and myself opened five boxed American Standard Toilets and found all of them had NO glazing around the rim and about a half inch down the side of the bowl! So be sure to check the rim for glazing before you buy. I returned mine. If you can't see under the rim you can still check it by running your fingers under the rim. If it is smooth then it is glazed. If it feels rough then it is not glazed and will stain easily and be hard to clean. Also, if not glazed then little cracks are exposed between the rim and the bowl - very unsanitary.
The Champion 4 is a great toilet if you can find a good one. I could not. What a shame American Standard has such poor quality control. HD has the Kohler Cimarron. It is a very good non-clogging alternative. It has a fast powerful flush because the tank system supports a large siphon jet. The siphon jet is a 1.25 inches diameter opening opposite the trap-way entrance at the bottom of the bowl. It is not as large as the Champ 4 siphon jet but much larger than most other toilet jets.

Following the provided directions for the requirement to have physical contact between the bowl and the tank is hard to do for one person. It will take two people to install the tank correctly. The plastic tools provided will work ok for the installation of the toilet seat but not for the tank. The tools are fine to start the nuts on the bolts provided for the tank; however, you will finish the job with a deep socket or waterpump plyers to "grab" the plastic nut drivers to continue tightening the bolts. To help the installation of the tank one person will need to push down on the tank top to help compress the seal while another person tightens the nuts--from side to side until contact is made front to rear of the tank to the bowl . It can be done- once physical contact is made tank to bowl front and rear stop tighting. Concerning the floor mounting bolts, the bolts provided are "undersized" in diameter by about a sixteen inch or so compared to those in aftermarket kits. Except for the seat, the same may be true concerning the bolts for the tank. If aftermarket bolts are used the plastic nut drivers cannot be used because the nuts will be oversized. Once correctly installed the toilet works great --I give it a score of 10 out of 10.

Looked at the Am Standard Champion 3 and similar Koehler, but based on Home Depot specialist Jesus in south Overland Park store, went for the slightly higher priced Champion 4 as I was told that the bowl has a special polish finish to help avoid spotting. I had HD contractor install since I had never done this job before and at that time there was a special installation price. Having watched, think I could easily handle any future such replacements; no tools necessary, all finger tight fittings Right height is excellent, not too high. Toilet is highly efficient, and quiet on refill. The dampened closing seat is nice, but not very thick (don't stand on it) Had problem in that the refill valve leaked slowly into the toilet after tank was full (drip, drip and slight filling sound), but installer returned day after I called and replaced the entire fill-valve tower with exact same part. Very pleased with performance and service. Highly recommended toilet.

i purchased 2 of these after reading the very helpfull reviews and tips. yes the seat is a bit cheap. so i purchased one i liked in the same aisle at the store. also the leaking issue i can understand but i used a socket wrench to tighten the bolts that hold the tank to the bowl and have had no problems, no leaks, and it really sped up the installation(the tool it comes with is worthless). And as far as the flush power is concerned, just played with the adjustment to get the water level to the best setting to provide the optimal flush. these were all tips from other reviewers, thanks!!!!

I replaced an old unit with this Champion 4. I also replaced the closet ringer as the old ringer came out when I pulled out the old.
Instructions were clear, and 'no tools' installation worked surprisingly well. The caps are tall enough that it is not necessary to cut the bolts off-- I was not looking forward to using a hacksaw there.
It flushes well, and the tank refills in just 12 seconds.

Purchased and installed 4 of these toilets in two of my houses. Easy to assemble, good build quality. Awesome flush never have to flush twice to clear the bowl of waste. I've looked into this toilet several times in the past two years read reviews on different websites and there were complaints about leaks from the seal or gasket between the water tank and lower portion of the toilet. Haven't had any issues with the 4 I purchased and installed. I'm thinking either a bad assembly on the homeowners part. Also this toilet will flush pretty much a whole roll of toilet paper. Tested this myself.

Purchased in store from HD to replace an older model toilet. Had really no problem installing the bottom (bowl) per instructions and using the supplied wax ring. Problem was with installing the tank. The expect you to use the flimsy supplied plastic tools to tighten the tank down to the bowl on the rubber gasket. The problem is, the gasket is a bit too thick. I followed the instructions to the letter (and using common sense), going back and forth from one side to another, and only able to get it down to where it had about 1/8" gap. The instructions say to get it to where the tank is touching the bowl back and front on both sides. To get it even close I had to switch over to a long socket and wratchet going ever so slowly. I ended up leaving about 1/16" on one side and not quite touching on the other. All looked okay until after 3 days a tiny bit of water seeping from the center union at the gasket. The support line said it needs to touch back and front on both sides and that the tank had to be perfectly level. I told them. I left the slight gap for fear of cracking the tank, but nontheless followed their instructions, loosening one end and re-tightening another. Right when I just about got it barely touching on the 1/32" gap side--crack. yep, tank cracked. I knew it. The people that are giving good ratings are just lucky with the mfg and the parts they got. And granted the toilet seems to flush quite well. But a 2 piece with a poor fitting tank -- you are just asking for problems down the line. Our old circa late 70's toilet had *3* bolts and rubber washers and the tank was actually meant to ride on those + the center gasket, and it lasted well over 30 years with no issue. The cheesy plastic wrenches are about only good for installing the toilet seat and that's it. Bad tank design. you never have ceramic or china touching each other. Re-design the tank/bowl union and you'll really have a champion here. Fortunately HD let me return the toilet (had not been used of course except to flush test it for leaks, which the bowl did not leak, just the tank due to poor design and mfg/qc). kudos to hd, but AS needs to rethink the tank design and how it sits on this toilet and/or get better qc!

We like pretty much everything about the toilets. We got two to replace the 40-plus-year-old toilets while our flooring was being replaced.
Installation went well. My only complaint is how awkward it is to reach the bolts when installing the seat. Need to be a bit of a contortionist. Also, I found that it helped to use a little liquid hand soap to adhere the plastic washer to the nut embedded in the installation handle so it wouldn't fall off while nearly blindly groping for the seat bolts.
Also, forgot that the toilet was higher than the old one, so had to make an unplanned run to the store for a longer supply line.
I'd recommend that you get a good quarter-turn valve so that while you are swapping out the toilets you can replace the old-fashioned seat valve that inevitably wears out and can't be turned off. The quarter-turn valve was recommended as more reliable in long term.
Speaking of higher toilet, that takes a bit of getting used to.
I feel good about the water we're saving. And the slow-close seat is a nice touch.

If you have someone in the family who cloggs the toliet on a regular basis this is the toliet for you! We werent sure about this but I was tired of unclogging the toliet twice a week. So after easy installation our cronic clogger tried it and...I LOVE THIS TOLIET!

I seriously love this toilet! Fantastic flushing action, not too loud, economical, and looks good too!. I was thinking about replacing my old toilet for years but just avoided it. Finally, after a guest overflowed the old toilet, I knew I couldn't put it off any more. I debated between a couple of brands and finally followed the advice of a popular consumer magazine and went with the Champion 4. I have not had a single problem in the year I have owned this toilet and I really do smile a bit every time I flush it. Best purchase of 2011. Just a note, I went with the Right Height and elongated bowl and both worked out well. Excellent buy!

Happy with this toilet's design, right height, and performance! No more plunger. Feels like sitting on a throne. No need to flush all the way. Had this toilet installed by my brother who is no plumber, and it took him about 40 minutes to accomplish the task. As mentioned by some reviewers, the water leakage was there, and let my brother know right away to remedy the problem. In the meantime I took the mop and placed it next to the toilet so that the mop would absorb the water leaking. After about three days, my brother told me he was going to come to my house to fix the toilet. I informed him the water leakage was no longer there, that the toilet probably needed a few days to settled in. Best toilet ever!

I've had this toilet for almost a year and it has not ever given me a moments problem. It flushes each and every time no matter how much toilet paper or whatever is in it. I remember my other toilet that got stuffed every time. This is a miracle and I love it strange as that sounds. Only thing I don't like is the handle but I guess in time I will get another.. It's to small and plastic feeling.

I was tired of my wife yelling "Honey, the toilet is clogged." I was a little nervous after reading some of the reviews on the Champion 4 but my main concern was buying a toilet that won't clog. I installed this in under an hour with no problems. The tank is solid, no leaks, and flushes like a champ. The wax ring that came with it worked just fine. I plan on buying another one soon to replace my other problem toilet.

I replaced a 20 year-old, 3.5 gal. standard toilet with this one and I love it. I installed it in a 2nd story bath, it is a bit heavy, but taking it up in two pieces, makes it much easier.
I'm 6'5" with bad knees, the extra height makes it much more comfortable to get on and off of. I was having to use a plumbers helper 3-4 times per week with the old toilet, and haven't had to use it once in the month this toilet has been installed.
The Champion 4 flushes clean and quiet. The tank refills rapidly (although could be a matter of water pressure, and valve opening from the source waterline).
Other reviews I read mentioned that the plastic seat supplied with the toilet wasn't the best, so I purchased an upgraded wooden seat when I purchased the toilet. However, I first tried the plastic seat for 2 weeks, and decided I could live with it since it would be more sanitary seat for cleaning. So I returned the wooden seat, un-opened.
A few reviews I read (not sure it it was on this site or not) mentioned a problem with gap between back of toilet and wall. The standard rough-in for toilets is 12 inches, but there is a 10 inch rough-in for tight spaces (so you would need a special toilet to fit it), and there is also a 16 inch rough-in. It sounds to me like they purchased a toilet meant for the standard 12 inch rough-in and unknowingly put it on a 16 inch rough-in pipe. Or they could have purchased a toilet meant for the 10 inch tight spaces rough-in and put it on the standard 12 inch rough-in.
American Standard is a division of Eljer, and one of the leading suppliers of bath fixtures. Can't go wrong with them on quality.
For those complaints about the toilet being damaged right out of the box, well, it is porcelain, and it can break, and while inconvenient for buyer, it should have been replaced free of charge, and the buyer shouldn't base their entire review of the working of the toilet, because of accidental damage.
I highly recommend this toilet!

We bought this toilet in February to replace an old one, and I had our plumber come out to make sure it was installed correctly. All was fine for four months.
Last week we noticed it leaking on one side. Had the plumber come back out this morning, and he found that the flush valve gasket was bad. Replacement parts = $19.00, labor = $100.00. I called American Standard to ask for reimbursement of some part of the cost under their warranty. They told me that I should have called them first before letting the plumber replace the part. So .. that means I would have had to pay the plumber twice. I'm disappointed - hoping it was just a fluke that this part failed so quickly after purchase.

My son and I installed in this toilet with only the tools supplied with the toilet and did it in less than 20 minutes. It works great, the easiest toilet I have ever installed. Love the toilet seat and the flushing power, no clogs, quiet. Love the height of the toilet. Very happy that after quick installation there were no leaks.
