Solar Power Roof Attic Ventilator in Weathered Grey Color with Roof-Mounted Solar Panel

The Ventamatic Solar Powered Roof Attic Ventilator with an 18 volt DC Motor has no energy costs, as there is no wiring to the AC main power source. The fan comes with a galvanized steel flange and weathered grey powder-coated steel dome. It has a 12.6 watt multi-Crystal panel which mounts on the roof adjacent to the ventilator.

The product had no defects and worked once installed. The installation instructions on the HD website and those coming with the unit are different leading to confusion over sealing the unit on the roof. I'm a do-it-yourself person and was initially intimidated by the instructions, but guessed my way around them. Otherwise, the product is good and allows for a ventilation system without running a 110V line into my attic. Fan is VERY quiet and does not need direct sunlight to operate.
Pros: Sturdy
Cons: not to be installed by a novice

I bought this product to ventilate my Palo Alto, CA garage which often gets very hot under summer sun.
First the PLUSSES: 1. Fan and solar panel were easy to install on my sloped, composition-shingle roof, 2. Detached solar panel can be mounted up to about 25' away with included wiring, 3. Fan operation is mostly quiet, 4. Fan is highly efficient and air movement is significant when panel is in direct sun and generating maximum current.
The MINUSES: 1. Fan motor makes a whistling noise during early morning hours when there is some, but not quite enough, sunlight to turn the rotor, 2. No thermal switch is included (for the price, I think it should be; this would automatically stop the fan from running when temps are cool so that heat is not ventilated away from the house during winter), 3 Screws that are provided for mounting the solar panel are not long enough to fully penetrate roof shingles and grip sub-roofing, 4, No sealant or weather stripping is provided to prevent roof leakage under fan flange or around solar panel wire hole.
On the whole, this is a good product and I am considering buying a second one for my attic.
Pros: Easy to Use, Easy to Install, Easy to Work With, Good Size & Weight, Economical

It's been about a month since I had the Ventamatic Solar Powered Roof vent fan installed and I can say that I've noticed the difference it has made upstairs. Runs extremely quiet, you don't know that it is operating.
Pros: Nice Design, Energy Efficient, good value
Cons: can't think of any at this time!

This solar fan is a great idea. On a scale of 1 to 10 I would rate the performance a 5. Solar powered devices rely on an optimum exposure angle to the sun to perform at their best. When pointed directly at the sun I would rate this fan a 7 compared to a 120 volt ac fan rated at a 10. Problem is it can't always be pointed to maximize its performance. So there is a compromise, the advantage for this solar fan is the power is free. Depending on where you live a 120v attic fan may cost you $15-30 or more a month to operate. I pointed the solar panel directly at the sun when it's about 2-3 pm this is shortly before peak temperatures. This angle keeps the fan running strong late in the afternoon when outside and inside temps are at their highest. The fan will run whenever there is light, although barely when the light is indirect or overcast. You may need different screws to attach the mounting brackets to the solar panel frame (they are too small in diameter). Also if you don't have a south facing roof slope with unobstructed solar exposure you will need to make some supports to tilt the panel toward the sun. I used (2) 12" threaded rods with 8-32 threads and a package of 8-32 nuts plus 2 flat 2" metal braces that I bent into a kind of "z" shape. The "z" braces screw to the roof giving a raised contact with the threaded rod which attaches to the solar panel braces and the "z" braces with (2) 8-32 nuts at each end for adjustability.
Pros: Easy to Use, Performs Well, Quiet, appears to be high quality, cheap to operate, good value
Cons: wrong mounting screws, no brackets to tilt solar panel, higher initial cost

Excellent product however screw holes in bracket were not correct size for the screws provided. We bought new screws to fit the holes.

Minor complaint, it should include an adjustable bracket to set panel at the correct angle for your latitude. Our roof pitch is too low, so I fabricated an adjustable bracket to correct the orientation.
