I bought this after having no power for 4 cold days during hurricane Sandy. It appears to have the updated fuel tank venting with the red fuel filter and I've run it for about 3 hours so far with no stalling. The engine starts on the first pull hot or cold. I was drawn to the Yamaha engine as I ride Japanese sportbikes and trust the quality. I have a 3000 sq ft house and had an electrician set up backfeeding the box with an interlock. I turned on our central (gas) heat, fridge, 46" TV, 1000 watt microwave, laptop and many 100 watt lights and it hummed along making clean consistent power. The oil that came with the unit poured out like molasses so instead I used some 5W-30 synthetic I had. The build quality is excellent, it's relatively quiet, easy to move around and the volt/amp/hertz/hour combo meter is great. Seems all the bad reviews are due to the fuel tanking venting issue and with that resolved now I think this is the best unit on the market for the money.
Yes, I recommend this product.

I scored this generator the Sunday night before Hurricane Sandy hit us here at the Jersey Shore. I put it together moments after the power went out. It has been running all of the critical circuits in our home including the kitchen appliances - fridge, freezer, gas stove and oven controls, coffee pot, microwave, toaster oven, TV, some lights, gas furnace controls, well pump. Can't imagine what else we could ask of this generator. Life would be miserable without it after 5 days without power. It has consumed between 1/2 to 3/4 gallons per hour of gas. Best $700 I ever spent!
Pros: Lots of Features, Easy to Use, Clear Instructions, Nice Design
Yes, I recommend this product.

I had researched almost all generators in the market, and decided on this one because of the clean power it generates and the price point. Having a Yamaha engine helps too. This is a heavy unit. The display on this unit shows volts, hours used, watts and frequency. This display in itself is found in higher priced generator units. The watt meter is only for the 120v outlets. The frequency dropped a bit as new loads were added, but stabilized very quickly for each new load. The throttle can be adjusted to bring it close to 60 hz if needed for any load. I am not sure if I like the zero gravity frame as it is difficult to balance on an uneven surface. But it is easier than lifting a 190 lb generator on one side and pushing. The noise is comparable to any alternator generator running at 3600 rpm. A fuel gauge on the gas tank will be good to have, but I can always open the gas cap to see how much is left. I did not have the gas cap issue yet, but I have not run it for a long time. The 120v outlets are GFCI protected, and needed reset to get power to it. This is like the GFCI outlets in our home kitchen or bath. The 120/240v L14-30R outlet is what I plan to use, and luckily this one is not GFCI protected. Some higher end generators come with GFCI protection for the 120/240v outlet due to OSHA regulations, and that is a problem if using a generator interlock kit on the sub panel for the generator hookup. Ridgid should have provided a small funnel with slanted base to pour the engine oil like other competing products come with.
Pros: Lots of Features, Stylish, Nice Design, Easy Installation
Cons: Too Heavy, no fuel gauge, no oil filler funnel provided
Yes, I recommend this product.

More than ample power for all of the essentials in the house... plus a/c units at night. Easy set up. Not as loud as some others in the market, but not quiet by any means. The hand truck style portability make it easy to transport from here to there. A natural gas / propane conversion kit is also available for this engine (MZ300) through US carburetion. I converted to natural and it runs even better.
Pros: Easy to Use, Nice Design, Easy Installation

Had a generator prior to Sandy and this was my back up unit. Had to run power for 10 days and thank god I had this unit because my old unit when on the fritz. This took over without a glitch. In fact it worked better than my old unit and was very quiet. Love the features like the on board wattage usage. As we brought on zones within our house we could tell the power consumption. Also bouhgt it due to having a Yamaha Engine which is known for durability. Thumbs up to the Home Depot great unit for the price.

I live in Brentwood MD where we have been hit quite badly with all the storms in the area... I have lost power five different occasions for up to days at a time. After storms came through wednesday and thursday after 11pm last week, causing me to lose power, I became depserate for at a minimum to have my AC still running in the house. I heard that a few people had returned this model of generator to the Home Depot on Rhode Isand Ave and I went to see if I could find a deal. Sure enough, there were several there for ~$520. I grabbed one immediately, got the necessary 12 gage power cords and took it home. I then started reading these reviews and it made me nervous I had bought a faulty generator. Yes, when I started it up it did stall, several times. Yes, some of the outlets didn't work. However, if anyone knows how these generators are supposed to work, they would realise that it is stalling because the gas cap isn't venting properly creating a vaccuum in the gas tank and causing the engine to suffocate, or stall. I turned the cap so it was half screwed in and the generator magically didn't stall. From reading other reviews, it seems the company already knows about this issue and will send you a new gas cap. The second issue, the outlets. If an outlet doesn't work on this generator, you can't just repeatedly hit the reset button and expect it to work. You have to turn off power to whatever you have it hooked to, unplug the appliance, and then reset the outlets, plug back in the appliance, turn on the power to the appliance and the outlet will work. Two of the outlets weren't working when I started the generator, it took a minute to reset them properly and now I have a perfectly running generator. Everyone who thinks this product is faulty and gave it a really low rating and review should really make sure they have read the directions and understand how to use something like this before they claim its faultly and return it. However, for those of you who did just that, thank you from me because I bought your unit and saved myself $200.
Yes, I recommend this product.

I'm giving high marks, primarily because of the easy set-up and features of the machine and test run, prior to storm. The storm was not severe enough to cause power outage. The motor started with only a half-pull and the controls appear to very good, e.g. shows how many hours machine has run. I hope I'm not premature in giving this machine a good rating. My son has some experience with portable generators and said he thought this was a very good selection.

I bought this a few weeks before Sandy after a tornado watch in my area. I hadn't opened it because I was considering returning it for something more powerful. After checking and rechecking the wattage of the things I wanted to power, I was convinced this should cut it.
The day before the storm, I finally took it out of the box, fueled it up and tested it. It made me nervous at first. It needed to start and stop a few times (on its own) to 'break in' before it finally ran. The clouds were looming overheard... and I feared it might not work at all! But it did.
We lost power at night, and the sump pumps in our basement needed power. This generator handled it so well. For the first couple of days after the storm, we ran it from around noon until 10pm. I was powering my fridge, sump pumps, some lamps, 46" flatrscreen TV and bluray player. It was really interesting to see just how LITTLE wattage things consumed! The sump pumps would kick in and the wattage jumped to around 2,000. But just for the moment. The fridge- a large GE with ice maker and water filer- runs under 200 watts. It has run steadily and without issue.
My brother just purchased a Honda generator that outputs 3000 watts- and he spent $2,500. I'm really not sure how that's possible. This little guy has been rocking for us.
Our next step is to have a transfer switch installed for effortless power to our heating system and other items as well.
LOVE this generator.

Hurricane Sandy provided a good test of the generators abbility. It starts easily and runs smoothly. It runs for 11- 12 hours on a tank of gas, roughly 1/2 gallon per hour. It's power seems very clean and our computers run without incident when using the generator. Capable and steady with moderate engine noise.
Pros: Easy to Use, Nice Design

I got this generator as a replacement from Home depot for a defective Husky model. I recently had to run the unit for 3 days after losing power during Hurricane Sandy. Mine must have the newer style gas cap because I never had a problem. I back feed my entire house, and turn off everything 240 in my panel. It worked flawlessly, very clean power. We had lights every where we needed them, 2 freezers and the refrigerator, 2 fish tanks all working and the microwave when ever we needed it, as well as multiple TV's. No voltage drops, no issues what so ever. It did shut off one time due to low oil. I think I left it a little low from the original fill.
The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because it doesn't have a gas gauge, never had a generator that didn't, even the cheapest ones. I didn't like having to go outside in the blowing rain and open the gas cap to see how much was left.
Pros: Easy to Use, clean power
Cons: no gas gauge
Yes, I recommend this product.

I bought this in the aftermath of hurricane Sandy. The generator pretty much powers our entire home with the exception of the dryer. All our lights, televisions and appliances run smoothly with this generator. The only thing I find troublesome is startinig it. Whenever we try to start it, the cord is extremely hard to pull. One of us has to practically stand on it. When we pull the cord, it will lift the entire generator rather that unwind from the coil.
Pros: Clear Instructions, Nice Design
Cons: extremely hard to pull start

Remembering Hurricane Irene last year I did not want to get caught without power with the threat of hurricane season increasing this year. I was hesitant on purchasing due to the low reviews but with more better reviews than bad I decided to take a chance. The unit was packaged very well and is heavy but assembly of the wheels and front mounts was easy. My wife complained about a strong odor of tar or petroluim in the garage but that is from the fresh paint, new motor, and wheels. I added the supplied oil and 1/2 gallon of gas. The unit started on the second pull and it ran very smooth. I tested it on my refirgerator, leaf blower vac, edger, shop vac, and a fan which all ran flawlessly. Not all at the same time though. The unit ran for about 1 hour on the 1/2 gallon of gas before it started to shut down by running out of gas with the fuel cap fully closed. I made sure to add gas stabilizer to the fuel. You wont run the gas totally dry from the tank when it shuts down. There may be about 1/4 cup gas left in the tank. My neighbor stopped by to check it out and he was surprised how the generator ran more quiet than a running lawnmower. The noise isnt much to worry about. My only concern is that the gas cap isnt vented. I contacted Ridgid to see if they can send me a new one just to be on the safe side. Otherwise it is a very solid unit, runs smooth, and all outlets work.. Be sure to read ALL directions before using the generator. There can be a small thing missed that may prevent the outlets not to work such as setting the GFCIs, or resetting the breakers. The display is a plus also which shows you the hours used, watts being used, and herts .. Otherwise I am very happy with the generator but need to run the generator a few more time to really break it in and test it. It may also be a good idea to change the oil after the first few hours of operation to get out any small metal shavings or other unwanted items that may be in the oil during break in period .
Pros: Easy to Use, Clear Instructions, Nice Design, peace of mind if ever lost power., home depot standing behind their products, clear fuel filter attached
Cons: none so far, fuel cap possibly not vented, smell of petrolium or tar (new item), ridgid need a better product registration format.
Yes, I recommend this product.

- Bought it for emergency usage only.
- Put oil and gas in, first pull , it started very nicely, expected from a Yamaha engine.
- Hit all resets on the panel including those of the GFCIs, plugged a light in all outlets (excluding the 240V) to make sure all have power. All good.
- Used a voltage meter to make sure things the voltages look Ok. All good.
- Ran it for 45 mins to make sure no mysterious "gas cap" issue. All good.
- An excellent unit overall in price and performance.

I bought this generator 2 months ago and used it with Sandy for the first time. It worked well for the first 4 hours, but after I moved away from a window it started to choke, I had to open the gas cap and then it worked again. I read some other reviews about this and that is how I found out about opening the gas cap a little. I let it run with the gas cap not completely closed and did well. I contacted Ridgid and the claim the gas tank has a vent and should not choke and the denied having sent gas cap replacements and state there is no need for one because it does not choke, but my guess the representaive who talked to me nevere used it....IT DOES CHOKE.
Pros: Easy Installation, good value for the price
Cons: Too Heavy, too loud, chokes
Yes, I recommend this product.

I bought this thing during the July 2012 DC storm that left me without power for 14 days. I have quite literally run this generator 22 hours a day for 2 weeks. It's awesome and I don't know what I'd do without it.
Two tips: First, to the person below that said he plugged everything in, but got no power. That's because the generator comes with 3 GFCI power recepticals (plugs), which contain fuse-breakers for your protections (like the square breakers in your bathroom). These ALWAYS come from the factory-testing toggled-off, and you must hit the "RESET" button on front upon initial operation.
Second, to the person that boiled their gas, you cannot keep a generator in an enclosed unconditioned room, with merely two box fans to circulate cooling air. You mentioned that you had a fan blowing on the unit, and an exhaust fan in the shed, but where was the intake fan to bring cool air into the shed? My unit did auto-shutoff twice in my first day of operation, while it was sitting out in direct sunlight. I set a box fan blowing against it, which was sufficient even in record 100 degree outside heat.
Excellent unit, highly recommend.
Pros: Easy to Use, Nice Design, Easy Installation
Yes, I recommend this product.

It took 10 minutes to bolt on the wheels and add oil and gas. (BTW, adding the oil is slow and drippy unless you prop up the side of the unit. This lets the oil flow in easier.) Literally the first pull of the cord and it started up. I could not be more impressed. I had my wife and 13-year-old son each start it to ensure they could; one pull each. Then my 12-year-old daughter tried -- all of 80 lbs. -- with the same result. Even more impressive. Everything looks very solid and well assembled, and noise is slightly less than the very old 5500 watt Generac it is replacing. I will take other reviewers advice and call Ridgid for a replacement gas cap.

This is a nice generator with problem gas cap. The gas cap is not vented causing gas starvation after 15 minutes causing stalling. They have redesigned the cap, but you must call to get the new one. Until then, you cannot tighten it so air can enter the tank. A cheap fix that should not have been overlooked.

Bought the unit when the power went out from a snow storm in northern Michigan. The unit was easy to get up and running, filled with the oil that came with the unit and filled it with gas. Half a pull got this baby up and running, and put the power back on. It had no problems keeping up with a well pump, furnace, fridge , and lights. Good buy at a good price. Ran everything on a tank of gas for over 12 hrs straight.

I bought this a few weeks ago and have been testing it out this weekend. We lose power alot in my neighborhood, and I have a bunch of fish tanks so I need to have a backup plan in place.
I ran the genny for an hour yesterday with no load, just to see if I'd have the stall out problem others have experienced and it ran fine. I'm running it today at a bit under half load, which is about what I'll run it at during an outage. It's been running for 2 hours now with no problems at all. I've got 1 large and 3 small fish tanks (filters, heaters and lights), a lamp, a stereo, and a 1500w portable heater hooked up and it's coming in at just under 1900 watts. The only other thing I really need to run during an outage is my fridge, and that should be no problem. I plan to run a window a/c unit instead of the heater in the summer and there should be plenty of power for it even with the surge an a/c produces. I'd much rather have to powerful a machine than one not powerful enough.
One thing people should note about this generator is that the instructions say it should be grounded. Since I know an electrician I went ahead and had him run a 6 foot ground rod in the area I'll use it in, but this could be a hassle for some folks.
It's noisey, but no more than any of the smaller gennys my neighbors run. I can live with it.
My only complaint with this genny is that there is no low fuel indicator. That would be a really nice feature in a rain or snow storm when you really don't want to have to stop the machine and open it up to check the fuel level. Why they would leave such a simple feature off of an otherwise great (and fairly expensive) product is beyond me.
Yes, I recommend this product.

Poor performance, the unit would not stay running with the gas cap secure. It appears to be the same problem others have experienced. The unit starves for fuel because the tank is not venting properly. Too bad, this unit has some good specifications for the price and I trusted the RIGID brand. They have very poor customer service and would not recommend this to anyone.
Pros: Lots of Features
Cons: gas cap, poor customer service and support, hard to transport
No, I do not recommend this product.
