I got this unit to transfer material from old VHS tapes. So far, everything I have done with it is a success.
I went with TDK +R discs because they were listed as discs that were tested with the model. I didn't want to take any chances and introduce a variable of uncertainty.
My biggest complaint against this unit is that it is strictly a dubbing machine; meaning, when you put a tape in, it expects to transfer the contents with no interruptions. You cannot pause recording and fast-forward through commercials and resume recording. Once you commit to Rec/Dubbing none of the operations will work except for Stop.
However, if you have external VCRs and DVD players, you can hook them up to this unit using Line 1 and Line 2. An external source permits all editing commands. You can pause recording; you can even fast-forward on your original VCR/DVD player in real-time while you are making your disc copy on this machine. I have my whole TV/Cable/DVD Player/VHS machine configuration represented with one set of RCA cables going to the "IN" of the Magnavox; I then have RCA cables coming from the "OUT" of the Magnavox to my TV. That enables me to record ALL sources, even the combination of these sources to one disc.
This unit enables you to manually create Chapters, edit Titles, name Discs and Titles and other things; however, I would keep that stuff to a minimum because it is pretty tedious.
You can also change recording quality mid-disc to have a variety of qualities to help organize and optimize the material that you are transferring.
With my current setup I am able to do everything that I want with this machine; and, so far, have not experienced any problems.
Pros: Vibrant Color, Powerful, Great Sound Quality, Clear Picture Clarity, Easy to Install
Cons: can't pause recording during the dubbing operation, remote is hard to read/see

Have used it to burn home VHS tapes to DVD. first disk I messed up by not "finalizing" the disk. Great feature that stops recording when no signal for 3 minutes. remote works well.
Pros: Compact, Clear Instructions, Easy Installation

Does everything my old one did. Can Tape to DVD from TV and omit commercials. All I want. Can tape same way to tapes and then dub onto DVD if recorded movies on VHS long time ago. Don't know of any machine can pause during dubbing. Whole purpose of dubbing is to press and walk away while it transfers from tape to DVD. So Far great! Price a little high.
Pros: Lots of Features, Easy to Install
Cons: priced a little high to others i bought

No, I do not recommend this product.
This product is too complicated to get hooked up. The lack of an internal tuner limits what you can do with it. The old VCR/dvd recorders are much better. Easy to connect and use. I have wasted countless hours trying to get it incorporated into my audio/visual system.
Cons: Difficult to Install, lack of an internal tuner
