Customer reviews for 12 lb. 225 ft. Small Gray Permanent Concrete Joint and Crack Filler

12 lb. 225 ft. Small Gray Permanent Concrete Joint and Crack Filler

After a successful launch of our 1/2 in. medium gray version, we are pleased to introduce the 1/4 in. Small Gray Crack Stix Permanent Concrete Joint and Crack Filler. This is the only permanent filler for concrete joints and cracks. This product originated from federally specified highway jobs but the only difference is you do not need a 200 Gal. melter to apply it. Crack-Stix is permanent because it is applied with heat (a simple hand held torch) and it bonds to the sidewalls of the joint. Concrete cracks and joints open up because they expand and contract with freeze or thaw cycles - but Crack-Stix will expand and contract right along with mother nature. Small Crack-Stix is designed for joints and cracks 1/4 in. to 1/2 in. in Dia.

I bought this based on much research. But glad I did after seeing how other neighbors got their driveways "caulked" by professionals only for everything to peel out the following year.
I got the thicker variant as well for larger joints. I cleaned and filled the joints with sand then used my grill propane with an extension hose and self-ignite hand torch to apply it ($20 hose and $15 torch from HD also). On tight joints I hammered down the string to make it fit and dip flush with the surface.
I had to go inch by inch, helping the compound bond to the concrete with a screwdriver as it melted. But it forms a tight self leveling seal that will probably last a long time, unless the freeze/thaw will affect it which remains to be seen after this winter, however it can be reheated or added on to. The $60 torch they try to sell along with this material is useless, you will be on your knees or sitting on a bucket doing this job, each inch needs attention. It's a tradeoff but might save you from doing this every year or two, if indeed it will last that long (they say "permanent" solution). I tried to install it as well as I could heating the concrete and making sure the material boils into the crack and bonds to the concrete. Very large joins required 2 applications.
I also tried their black material which is available at the local HD in small reels, it's much worse on concrete, tends to overflow the joint after it's hot and makes a mess, also much softer when it's hot outside, this grey stuff is decently hard to the touch except when very hot outside - it becomes a little soft. I recommend this over other products and over the black variant (which is better for asphalt driveway). It's quite aesthetic and blends in with the concrete especially if the concrete is new.
Pros: Easy to Use, Performs Well, Seals Well
Cons: Difficult to Install

No, I do not recommend this product.
The idea was good but there are some issue that may cause more problems than fix it. I find out that plastic wrap did not melt with the bottom part, when you burn the top will melt but NOT the bottom because of the plastic wrap. The best way is to remove the plastic before you put it in the crack but there is more work than I thought, also forget the burner use the heat gun much better.
Cons: Inconsistent

Response from Home DepotBy THD Customer ServiceNovember 11, 2013
Dear Customer ,

I apologize for your experience with this product, I did reach out to the MFG for more information on this issue and below is their response to you.

The remedy to the problem experienced by this consumer is to simply apply more heat. The consumer may not apply enough heat to completely melt the crack-stix and melt the plastic. When completed the repair should look without any air bubbles or gaps. Dalton Enterprises requests all consumers to contact us directly for any other questions on this issue at 800-851-5606.

I used this on my porch to fill the space in between the slabs. I heat the Crack Stix with map gas then I toss sand on top. Works for me quite well.

I used this product and was disappointed in that it used a lot and took a long time to melt left a lot of scorched spots. I Also bought the black for the blacktop and that seemed to be thicker and melted much better.
Cons: Difficult to Use, Difficult to Install, shrinks up

No, I do not recommend this product.
I made several attempts to use this product for expansion joints in my sidewalk. I found it difficult to work with and I also found the results to be poor. I ended up returning the product and getting something different.
