Loud, works good but loud

"Unit was simple to install and to operate but I felt as though the unit was too loud. As soon as the compressor clicks on, the whole house started to shake and had to turn up the volume on the TV. Not sure if thats common since I havent had much exp with window ac units but it did seem to be loud. Finding the rattling was also a pain. It seems I wa always having to adjust something to get it to quit rattling. It was quiet on low fan but high was loud.
As far as the air quality, it did blow cold air after it was running a few minutes. Granted, it did its job. I would have liked if it had a a timer on mode, but it only has timer off. The remote, comes in handy. Overall, I felt for the price, maybe it was fair but I think the unit is just too loud if your going to be near it watching tv or such. I would recommend this product to a friend if noise isnt too much of a concern. This is a big unit and may require two people to install it."

1 year later. Still working, but...

"I bought this unit to use in the upstairs of my house. The house has central air, but the upstairs (1 bedroom) always is 10-20 degrees hotter in the summer. WOW! what a difference it makes.
Some people say hard to install, I say NOT TO BAD! If you can change your oil on your car, you can install this no prob.
I have had this unit running 24/7 all summer long last year, and this year so far. No problems until recently. For some reason the unit has been blowing the fuses (circuit breaker) the last few days. I don't know what the problem is, but has never happened before. in addition, it has been making a few funny noises too. I have cleaned the filter every week, and not sure what to do.
It is now out of warranty, but it has served me well. Like I say it has been run 24 hours a day for about 10 months total, so I don't know if that is a "normal" lifespan of an a/c unit like this.
I will run the unit til it dies, hopefully a couple more years, and then buy another one.
Anyway hope this helps people evaluate this product before purchase."

Survived Portland Heat Wave

"Had Parents visiting during heat wave and broke down and bought this AC unit at Home Depot. Glad I didn't buy a "cheaper" or less powerful product. Our house stays naturally cool due to oak trees and a concrete slab floor. However, we got cooling benefits in our entire 2400 sq foot home and was very comfortable in our 24 X20 living room that opens into dining room, kitchen, and front entry. If you haven't had AC before expect a lot of water to spit out front and back until it dries the air out. But it did a great job of dehumidifying the air quickly. Can’t attest to the window installation because I did a custom through the wall installation with a larger wall opening on the outside to allow for ventilation. Took about two hours total."

Set-up is difficult.

"1st off, I am here to say the installing this product is not easy, especially if you have storm windows like I do! The directions are unclear and there are only a few confusing pictures so I would highly reccomend you having somebody who has experience install this product. We ended up having to make a 2nd run to Home Depot to buy better brackets because the ones supplied are VERY cheap and flimsy. We also bought a support bar for it because its too heavy to sit in a windowsill in my opinion.
As for the actual A/C unit, it works great! The cold air is awesome, but its just the fact that the installation was so difficult and the way the instructions were written were so hard to read, I have a hard time recommending it to anybody but a professional. This is not a DIY project.
Good Luck!"

"My husband and I just moved into an upstairs apartment without central air. After we moved in our landlord installed this unit. It is great! It is nice and quiet but it also does a wonderful job of cooling down our apartment. This week has been in the 90's and I don't feel hot until I step outside. I highly recommend this product."

Best A/C I've Ever Had

"I originally purchased a different, more expensive, major brand A/C, installed it in my window and after only 2 weeks the motor started making a racheting noise and spewing water into my living room. I returned it to the place of purchase and headed over to Home Depot.
When I purchased the LG I had never even heard of the brand but the store employee said they made excellent products. Well, they were ABSOLUTELY right. I purchased the 10,000 BTU unit and it's easy to install and operate. It's the quietest A/C I've ever heard and it does a superb job of cooling. I bought it for my living room (which is about 13' x 16") and it cools that beautifully. In addition, there is an open archway from the living room into the dining room and a door into the study and these two rooms are cooled as well. I'm very pleased and would definitely buy other LG products."

I C E C O L D A I R ! ! ! ! !

"Just purchased this unit and had it setup in under 20 minutes. As others have stated below, the instructions do show many pictures but the wording is a little misleading and needs to be checked over for use of grammar (ENGLISH).
Installation is pretty straightforward and rather simple. I did cut a length of 2" dowel rod to make an outside support as it seemed to bow out the upper window a bit (because of its weight). You may want to consider getting the adjustable stand from Home Depot or just cutting a 2x4 or dowel rod as I did. I did it for piece of mind.
The unit fits the window snugly, and I was able to use the attachment screws to tighten up the sliding valances on either side so that they form fitted to the window jam. Again, it’s somewhat self-explanatory once you start assembly.
After installation, make sure to check the slope of the unit with a level. As long as you have a slight drop towards the outside, you wont have to worry about water entry. Tomorrow I plan on running a bead of silicone around the outside of the unit where it fits against the window just to close up any thin slivers of air gap.
Upon powering the unit up, I was greeted with a blast of ICE COLD AIR!!! The controls are easy to use and again, self-explanatory. I have not tried the timer cycle but I will fiddle with it tonight.
The bedroom cooled down VERY QUICKLY!! If I leave the door open, the cool air makes its way to the living room, and I noticed after about 30 minutes the main house A/C's thermostat was showing a several degree drop in temps!!!!! That right there is proof to me that I made the right choice! I didn't want to even try to fiddle with a cheap 1-year warranty 5000btu $99 unit. Even some of the 6500 and 8000btu units looked cheap and felt like they would have a harder time trying to keep up with the Texas heat (106F TODAY!)
I did allot of research and found that this LG had some of the highest ratings on several websites and that it would cool way more than I actually needed so I feel that it will work less so it may very well last much longer than the 5 year warranty period.
PRO: 5 year IN HOME full warranty on parts AND labor.
PRO: 10,000btu's of ICE COLD AIR!
PRO: NO VIBRATION or other noises other than the fan and compressor. It actually puts out a nice subtle hum that my wife and I can easily fall asleep to!! That’s a plus in my book!
CON: Bit on the heavy side (I know I know, they all are). Stick a piece of wood underneath the rear to help support it and rest easy.
CON: The fan is designed to slosh water in the drip pan up against the condenser to help increase cooling efficiency, but it ends up sloshing some of it all over the ground and a little bit hits the back of the left side expanding louver. No leaks inside yet but Ill keep a close watch.
Overall, I am VERY HAPPY with this unit!!! Does the job and looks good doing it!!"

LG A/C Unit Model LWHD1009R

"This unit was VERY easy to install! 10K BTUs is more than enough to cool down most small-midsize areas.I actually mounted this in a Thru-the-wall location in my girlfriends Condominium Unit. Noise level is FAIR,but the cooling is AWESOME.It only cost $259 at home depot. There is a smaller unit (8000BTU) that costa $199,but the 10,000BTU model is more cost effecient in larger rooms.I would highley reccomend this to anyone wanted to save money to cool down their place."

"When i initially began to look for an air conditioning unit the only prerequisite I had was for the product to work and keep the room cool, the LG does just that. Although it does work well and keeps our room as cold as a meat locker, I do have a few initial complaints: perhaps this is due to our own failure to properly secure the unit in the window, but it does make a distracting vibrating noise. We were able to silence it by stuffing pieces of insulating foam around the framing, but it still occasionally vibrates regardless. Also, I had expected the energy saver mode to be self-timed to stay on and turn off in somewhat of a consistent manner, but it doesn't. Sometimes the energy saver mode can stay on for 3 hours without turning off once, or it will turn off a minute after i turn it on and continue switching on and off every few minutes. Initially I thought the energy saver mode may have regulated itself according to the temperature of our room, but after observing its habits, I realize it has no logic or reason to why it chooses to turn itself off or on. Despite the product's occasionally irritating flaws, I still gave it a high star rating because for its relatively affordable price, it gave my family a world of relief from the scorching July heat! I would recommend this product to anyone who cant afford anything too fancy but is merely looking for something to keep the room cold and doesn't mind a few minor imperfections in the product."

Very Good Unit

June 23, 2009

"As others have stated, the installation instructions are not the best, so you need to be patient - but it wasn't that hard to get installed.
I am VERY pleased with this unit! Works like a charm, and cools the room quickly. Has gotten quieter as the fan and compressor have broken in, too. We are in the middle of a week where the heat index is well over 100 degrees, and the AC is having no trouble keeping up.
Oddly, the only real noise issue is some rattling that occurs from the filter door. You have to "not quite" close it all the way. I also had to wedge a small wad of paper under the vent, to keep it from rattling. Once I figured that out, the unit is surprisingly quiet.
If not for the case rattles, and somewhat bad instructions, I'd give this 5 stars. That said, I would GLADLY recommend it to a friend. It does the job, and does it extremely well."

Awesome A/C Unit!

"I did a lot of research online to find the best BTU for the bucks.
This one was a little more than other brands, but it definately was worth the extra $20 bucks!
There were some bad reviews about the noise level, but I don't know they're talking about. It is a very quiet unit if you have it braced in the window correctly.
The temp in the house at 5:30pm was over 90 degrees. Within 1/2 and hour at 70 degrees, I'm am actually a little chilled. This says a lot, because I sweat when I watch other people working out!
It is acually starting to cool down in the kitchen and the bedroom off the living room. So that's around 650 square feet.
It's also way smaller than my 8,000 BTU unit that's about 10 years old, but cranks out the cold air 110% better.
I would recommend this unit to everyone.
Only on CON - it is not Energy Star compliant."

"I just hooked up earlier today, easy setup and instructions. Turned on full blast and what a pleasENT suprise- huge gush of cold air on highest settings- ( i have a 8000btu "hampton bay"-the lowest settings blows away my 8000btu set on highest settings!!!!)
Started blowing cold air from the get go no waiting, as temp drops i use remote to put on energy saver and set the temp i want and im good to go !!!!
Maybe a lil more in price but works as intended, not loud or noisey either, good blower- plenty of cold air-, good name brand = good buy

Great A/C Unit

"We bought all of our AC units from Home Depot three years ago. All three LG units are working great! This one, in particular does a fantastic job in cooling my large downstairs which only has ONE window that opens. My house has a strange layout, and the cool air is powerful enough to flow through my living room (20'X15') and into my kitchen (15' X15') I am impressed with this LG unit. This is the third season that we've used this unit and haven't had a single problem. AND, my husband is currently deployed to Iraq and I was able to throw it into my window and set it up alone this year. It's heavier, but set up is simple. I highly recommend this unit!!!"

"I purchased this LG unit a few days ago, after my other one (Another brand, same size) went out after only one year of service. To my dismay the old one only covered parts not labor.I read the reviews on this unit here before buying and am happy with the performance. It is much colder than the old one, and quieter too. Also it covers parts and labor for 5 years. The only concern has been the front cover where the filter goes vibrates on the top edge and makes a vibrating sound. I think this is why some reviewers said it is noisy. I wedged a small piece of cardboard between the filter cover and the top edge and its perfectly quiet."

Great Product, but one problem

"I received the air conditioner very fast. The first thing I found to be a problem was getting the screws on the pull outs, what a pain! Second, the part of the grill the pulls out forward had a broken piece so it doesn't shut properly, but it looks shut enough. I wasn't about to pay for shipping it back because of that minor problem. The air conditioner itself is quieter than any other one I have purchased. It has not been that hot here in MA, but the unit seems to blow out some very cold air. i would recommend this a/c for purchase."

Sure, it makes a little noise and you may need to turn up the tv a little bit but thats to be expected with a bigger sized a/c, plus its worth it to be able to sit comfortably with out sticking to the leather couch!"

"This is a great air conditioner. It is lightweight, quiet, and provides great, cool air circulation. The remote works perfectly. Assembly and installation is another matter. The directions aren't quite clear on installation of the drain plug and the side curtains. Several parts were quite a mystery; however, managed to figure them out."

Great buy, should have done it sooner

"I live in a mobile home in Albuquerque, NM and had used evaporative cooling (swamp cooler) every year, but the water here is so mineral-filled that the lines needed to be cleaned every month. I decided to try this unit in the living room/kitchen area, about 420 square feet.
All the windows in this area are 46" across, and have storm frames, so I had to build a frame for the unit to sit in (since the air conditioner is made for windows NTE 36" across). I made sure to look at the installation pictures and directions so once the frame was set in the window the air conditioner slid right in. Yes, this was time consuming and a bit involved but I would have had to do it for any air conditioner I bought. If you're lucky enough to have the perfect window frame setuo you could easily install this unit in under half an hour. It should be noted that the installation instructions in the manual on the LG website are no longer current. THe upper frame guide is already attached and there's no need to attach sill supports. The new process really simplifies installation.
Once the air conditioner was in the window it was easy to operate. The control panel is easily understood and the remote is just as simple. When I turned it on I immediately got cold air. According to the manual it takes 30 minutes to cool a room 1 degree but it seemed much quicker than that. I saw on another web site that the EER rating works out to a SEER rating of 10.96, which is excellent for a window unit.
Some reviewers complained about compressor noise but I don't hear the compressor at all. You can hear the fan, of course, but it's no louder than a floor fan. I set it on the middle fan speed and, while it's there in the background, it doesn't interfere at all with the television, phone conversations, or room conversations. On the lowest speed the sound of the fan is almost nonexistent. This unit is very quiet and could easily be used in a bedroom if desired.
My swamp cooler is on the roof and blows into the living room; there's no duct work to send the cooler air to the other rooms. I'm expecting this air conditioner to easily cool the living room, kitchen, and master bedroom. The other rooms will be cooler by association, just like the swamp cooler. Considering the cost of setup every year to get the swamp cooler going versus the cost of this air conditioner (which has a 5 year warranty for parts, compressor, and labor) I'm expecting to pay no more than Iprevious summers and the cooling will be better."
