Hello Hellen and thank you for your question.

I have recently had several customers change out their old windows for new energy efficient vinyl windows. You will need to check several measurements to ensure that the blinds will fit the new windows:

1. Will the window frame dimensions (height and width) be changed when the new windows are installed? Ask the installer how the new windows will be installed and if the framework and any existing window mouldings will be affected.

2. Even more importantly, how will the depth of the window change? You may still be able to install the blinds as an inside mount, however, they may extend outside the framework (no longer a flush-mount installation) or need to be installed as a ceiling mount (through the top of the framework).

Best wishes on your project.

Hey floyd,

Come into your local Home Depot and speak to a blinds/decor specialist. Every store I've ever worked for has a little tool box that has free spare blinds parts.

While some locations may or may not have the valance clips, consult the store's blinds/decor specialist to see if you can get a pair of them.

You can follow the shortening steps included in the Installation & Maintenance Instructions sheet found inside product packaging.

Here is the steps of how to shorten the blind
1. Remove all bottom rail buttons
2. Cut knots from lift cord
3. Remove extra slats. (Carefully slide out
slats to the side until you reach your
desired length)
4. Replace bottom rail onto ladders location nearest
the desired length and cut off excess ladders.
(Leave approximately 2” (5cm) below the bottom rail)
5. Twist ladders end and insert into

If your inside dimensions are 28-1/2 on the window and you want to hang these mini-blinds on the outside window board trim, then you should measure one to two inches on either side for coverage on the width for more privacy. The standard length is 64" inches and adjustable by removing the bottom trim piece and taking out a few slats to the length you're comfortable with. Do leave at least one slat more on the bottom than you intended to take out and replace the bottom trim piece. Do not cut any strings until you have the exact length you desire. It's better to add a few slats if you've taken too many out. If the string is cut too short, you're pretty much stuck with that length.

Hello BlueCrab15 and thank you for your question.

You should purchase the 32 inch wide blinds.

The blinds are shipped with 1/2 inch pre-cut to accommodate for the mounting brackets and hardware (for inside mounts). Since your window is 28-1/2 inches wide + 3 inches added for outside mount, you will need a 31-1/2 inch wide blind. The 32 inch blind is actually 31-1/2 inches wide.

Take care to ensure that the 1-1/2 inches on either side of the window for the outside mount are centered for a symmetrical appearance on the window frame.

The installation instructions will show you how to trim the blind to length if desired.

Best wishes on your project.

Hey Dawn,

No, these blinds cannot be used outdoors for several reasons.

The main reason is due to the nature of the blinds themselves as well as the lift mechanisms.

If you did decide to place them outside, any UV rays and moisture would ruin both slats and the metal lift mechanisms in a short amount of time.

Only purchase blinds that state that are outdoor rated on the packaging to ensure they can be installed outside.

RRpete,
Thank you for your question! When ordering blinds please remember that if you order a 33" blind, the actual measurement of it will be 32.5" to allow for clearance in an inside mount window. Either size may work for you, however if there might be areas in your window that are slightly smaller that the 32.75 measurement, it would be sager to go with the 32.5 blind that would measure 32". Please visit www.HomeDepot.com to place your order for this item today! Thank you for choosing The Home Depot!

Minimum depth at the top header is just a hair over 3" inches with the front header facing added. Without the decorative header slat facing it's exactly at 3" inches. The slats themselves measure in at 2" inches. If hanging from the outside board trim there is no problem with depth, but you will need to consider depth when hanging them from the inside of the window frame.

The width is the finished size. It says on the product page that the blind comes 1/4 in narrower to allow for the top fitting. So measure the exact width of the window gap. There is a PDF on the product page that shows how to measure. The length is not adjustable although some people I believe to take out slats. It doesn't really matter if they are a bit long , IMO.

If you already have blinds and you like the way they fit, then you can bring your old blinds in and they can measure the width and cut the blinds to match this measurement. You might want to take your own measurements as well. Generally you don't need the height measurement because the blinds come with instructions on how to remove slats and tie things off to get the right height, but if your windows are unusually tall, you might want to take this measurement just to make sure. If that were the case, ask about special ordering the blinds. Disclaimer: I have yet to remove slats, as in my case it looks like I only have one or two extra slats, so I may just store them as spares on the blind instead of having to keep the box.
If you don't already have blinds, you should measure the the opening width in three places and use the largest value. They will cut them to fit in this width. HD's recommended gap is 1/8 to 1 inch. I think 1 inch lets in too much light. You need some width to accommodate the mounting brackets. My preference is for the blind width to be 3/8 to 1/2 inch less than the minimum opening width. We have no trouble opening and closing ours with this gap.
