If you already have blinds and you like the way they fit, then you can bring your old blinds in and they can measure the width and cut the blinds to match this measurement. You might want to take your own measurements as well. Generally you don't need the height measurement because the blinds come with instructions on how to remove slats and tie things off to get the right height, but if your windows are unusually tall, you might want to take this measurement just to make sure. If that were the case, ask about special ordering the blinds. Disclaimer: I have yet to remove slats, as in my case it looks like I only have one or two extra slats, so I may just store them as spares on the blind instead of having to keep the box.
If you don't already have blinds, you should measure the the opening width in three places and use the largest value. They will cut them to fit in this width. HD's recommended gap is 1/8 to 1 inch. I think 1 inch lets in too much light. You need some width to accommodate the mounting brackets. My preference is for the blind width to be 3/8 to 1/2 inch less than the minimum opening width. We have no trouble opening and closing ours with this gap.
