Customer questions and answers for NuTone 70 CFM Ceiling Exhaust Fan with Light and 1300 W Heater

Question

Is this simple to install as a replacement fan?

I need to replace my current fan that has a light & exhaust. I don't need the light, but I do need a heater. Do I just disconnect the old one & plug the appropriate wire into the new one?

It's a little more complicated than that, as you probably know by now. The ceiling/drywall has to be cut and then repaired in the process. A good renovator/handyman can do it.

If your planning on buying another fan/light/heater unit and installing in the ceiling it will require 3 switches and 3 wires going into the unit. If you decide not to use the light you could use that wire for heat. Therefore no extra wiring is needed. If this is the case you will need to wire the unit direct to a connection box that exist from your fan.
If your just replacing the fan unit you can remove that like changing a light bulb. By removing the light cover, removing the light bulb using a phillips head screwdriver you remove one screw. Then the plastic cover comes off of the unit. Each fan and light has a plug in on this unit that can be unplugged and replaced from inside the bathroom.
What ive found is the parts to replace seems to be about the same as a complete new unit.
Hope this helps .

Thank you for your e.mail. I certainly wish it could be this simple!! However, unplugging the old one and inserting the Heat/Vent/Light model 665RP will not be possible. The 665RP has that heater attached and requires the appropriate wiring. Your old unit, since it was just the exhaust fan and light, probably used 14 GA wire. The heater on this unit will require 12 GA wire. You will need to investigate the wiring situation. Also, the 665RP is not recommended for inside the tub/shower enclosure. It can only be installed outside of that area. If you require further assistance, or have additional questions, please contact our Technical Support Department at 888-336-6146. Again, thank you for e.mail and have a good day!

Nutone system that has a light/heater/exhaust fan runs on 3 separate switches. You turn on what you need. It is not automatic.

Thank you for your e.mail. If the heater side of your unit is not working, the most likely resolution is to replace the heating element. The heating element comes with the thermal protector, which is the safety part. If the unit is overheating, the themal protector opens, and the heat side will be completely shut off. However, to be sure you order the correct part, you will need to know if you have a 665RP original model, or the more current model. The original model heating element part number is 0969B000. The more current version is part number S98004514. You should contact Customer Service at 888-336-6146 to help determine which part is the correct one. Again, thank you for your request

Hi, Dale. Thanks for your question. I reviewed the description on Home Depot's site. It does mention that the grille is polymeric, but it does NOT mention the lens/light cover. The cover is plastic, too. If you have further questions and would like to speak with a Technical Support person, please dail 888-336-6151. Thanks, again.

Question

Want to replace a heat lamp-vent fan that was installed in our house when built in 1974.

The unit is located over the tub/shower and is separate from the light switch which activates the vent fan. The unit has two heat lamps that have a cooling fan. Would like to have both the room light and heater/vent fan separate as they are now. Would I have to have an electrician install heavier wiring for the unit if I can get someone to replace it for me?

Thank you for your request on our model 665RP. Please note that this unit can NOT be installed inside the tub or shower enclosure. It must be installed several feet away, OUTSIDE the enclosed area. All wiring must comply with local codes and the unit must be properly grounded. The wire to use on this unit is 12 gauge for the heater, and 14 gauge for the fan and light. The unit can be wire several ways to your switch. It would be best to review those choices on the installation instructions. To locate a set of instructions, go to www.nutone.com. In the upper right-hand corner is a model search. Type in 665RP and hit Go. It will take you directly to the page and set of installations instructions will be there. If you have any further questions, let me know.
Thank you.

Thank you for your question about replacement parts. Yes, motors are available. Some are available on HomeDepot.com, and many more are available through our Parts Dept. To be sure that you get the correct part I would recommend that you contact our Customer Service group. Be prepared with your correct model number, and have the ventilation motor information as well. As you can imagine, we have thousands of different parts. We would want to be certain you're getting the correct one, as there is more than one version of the 6665RP. To speak with a Customer Service rep, please dial 888-336-3948. Again, thanks and we look forward to your call.

Question

In an older home, without an exhaust fan, can you add a light/heater/exhaust unit through the current light in the bathroom?

I would like to keep the light above the sink and using a separate 3 way switch install the new 3 in 1 combo kit near the shower.

Hi, Scott. Thanks for your question about this Heat/Vent/Light unit. This unit has an exhaust fan that must be vented to the outside. Therefore, while some of your wiring is at the current light location, you still need duct work that vents to the outside. Keep this unit above the sink would be acceptable as far as the location, however, because it incorporates a heater it must be several feet away from the actual shower enclosure. It would be my suggestion to contact our Technical Support group and discuss this further with them. You can reach them by dialing 888-336-6151. Again, thanks for your interest in this unit, and I'm hopeful that our Tech Group can give you a solution.

HI, Jess. Thanks for your questions on the 665RP. These units are U.L. approved for a particular type of installation. When a heating element of any kind is being used, the way the heat rises is taken into consideration. This unit has fan forced heat, but still it has an element. It can NOT be installed on an angle as that would be a faulty installation. Also, the bulb creates heat, too.
You also ask about clearance. This unit is suitable to be installed near insulation, so are you asking about insulation?? or about the run of duct?? or if you are close to the actual roof?? To be sure that we guide you correctly, I would suggest that you contact our Technical Support group at 888-336-6151 and discuss it with them. Then if any other questions arise, you can ask them at that time. Also, if you click on the More Infor tab while viewing the product on Home Depot's site, you can access an Installation Instructions. Again, thanks for your questions.
