Gardner 5-Gal. Sta-Kool 770 Cool Roof Elastomeric Coating

Sta-Kool 770 Ultra White Elastomeric Roof Coating is a tough, highly flexible, rubberized roof coating. This high-performance, 7-year warranted elastomeric roof coating resists cracking and peeling. The coating also provides a highly protective barrier which reflects the sun’s heat and destructive UV rays. This helps to cool roof surfaces and reduce interior temperatures. This product is an “investment” which can actually pay for itself in savings on cooling costs. Covers approx 50-75 sq. ft. per Gal. depending on porosity of the surface.

The STA-KOOL container states the prep work required, basically 1) clean; 2) patch and 3) protect.
Clean all dust, dirt, oil, loose gravel and peeling paint. Wire brush rusty metal and prime with metal primer/sealer before using this product. Patch any leaks with Elastomeric patching compounds. Finally apply the product on a sunny day.

I applied this product to an RV fiberglass roof with 4 or 5 thinner coats than what they say. But you need to make sure that the roof doesn't pool water or leak.

Like everything, it depends. If you have large flakes of rust, you need to scrape, sand, primer, etc. If the base you apply the paint to is flaking off, the paint will help because of its thickness and viscosity, but it wont get rid of the rust, it will still be there hiding, waiting to cause problems. A little light surface rusting shouldn't be a problem.

Clean the roof, dry it and then run a putty knife over the surface. If you get a bunch of stuff off, you have a lot more work to do.

You can look into paints specifically designed for handling rust as a first coat, then this stuff to protect and seal it for a long period.

Hello AZKG and thank you for your question.

The manufacturer of STA-KOOL (Gardner-Gibson) has instructions for Applying Elastomeric Roof Coatings including on urethane and polystyrene foam surfaces. You will to clear the roof of debris, clean with a pressure washer, patch and repair cracks and then reinforce the repairs with reinforcement fabric. You will then apply the STA-KOOL to a dry roof surface on a clear, warm and sunny day. Instructions can be found here: http://www.gardner-gibson.com/files....

This is not the intended application, but it may help. You have to really clean the area well to get proper adhesion. Then apply product in multiple coat layers. Multiple coats is the only way you will be able to get a heavy build. Obviously we cannot guarantee the results, but you can try at your own risk.

My usage of this product was on a RV roof and is basically painting the roof, like you would paint your ceiling except I did five coats. I doubt there is any sound deadening with such a thin layer. It does cool the inside of the RV a lot compared to before.

I'm not familiar with HD Stichbond but I use this product over a fiberglass repair. I was applying this product to my RV fiberglass roof when I was kneeling on the roof and one knee punched through the roof. I found the about 3/8" thick plywood was rotted it that area. So I cut out the rot between roof rafters and put new wood in about 2 square feet of plywood after first making the roof rafters thicker. I found the rafters were made of about 7/8" plywood, so I widened them in the area by some redwood 2X4 in a frame shape to give me a good base to attach the new plywood sheathing. Then went to a shop specializing it fiberglass products and bought a heavier glass fabric and applied resin from Home Depot. I use the STA KOOL product after using two coats of Zinser water base primer. I also use it over EternaBond (I believe it is called) at the end caps. It's been done for about a month so I don't know the success of the repair. Be sure you do all the sealing around end caps and vents first and wash the roof with TSP. After cleaning and dry I applied 5 thinner coats rather than 2 thick coats as recommended by my local RV repair shop.

Note that for my case since I wood rot because I didn't use this product sooner that I probably have wood rot in many places so I walk very carefully on the roof and step where I believe the roof rafters are. So day I will probably break through again and have to do another patch as explained above.

The problem is high speed wind and water hitting it and ripping part of the plastic like paint away. I am using my leftover paint for a lot of things that don't go 70 mph down the highway a foot off the ground. Things like the doors on the barn, some stucco areas that get a lot of beating from the sun and wind, concrete walls that need some help with the weather, etc.

I took the left over paint and put it in smaller buckets and stored it. This way I don't have to open the big one and let air in it to paint something else.

To see if it will hold up to the conditions, paint a bit of the inside wheel wells and then check it after a few trips.

Like everything else, it depends. This stuff is a paint, not a filler. So, if you get the old mortar out and fill the space with grout or new mortar, then provide a drip lip so the water doesn't run down the side and enter somewhere else, this will seal the mortar very nicely.

The problem I see is that this comes in a five gallon bucket. You'll probably use less than a quart.

This is an exceptionally thick elastomeric paint, not a filler. You have to first get the hole plugged up and then this paint will protect the fill material. It sounds like the contractor took the easy way out and just covered up the hole without fixing it first.

Ask around your area what are good materials to fill the problem area and get the leak taken care of first. This will protect the repair and put an extra layer of leak prevention over the top. I went to a roofing supply shop and talked to the guy at the counter about a problem area. They sold me a gallon bucket of silicon putty which plugged the hole, then after that set up, I painted the top of it with this product (two coats) and haven't had any problem there since.

You can paint over this and it will bond quite well, however the problem is that most paints that one would use as a match won't survive the hot sun day after day; they're just not designed for that. Additionally, this paint will expand and contract with the weather, that may loosen the paint on top such that it flakes off. Go to a paint expert and talk to them about the product and ask them for a color matched solution to minimize this problem over time. It might also be a good idea to give the manufacturer a call to discuss it. The folks are nice and will help you out with some suggestions.

I can not remember actually reading anything about the product saying anything about painting on it. Good question Katy, this may be something I try to do myself like the product on a small piece of material scrap and letting it dry out a day or two, then take some paint and paint over the product and let it sit out in the weather for a while, especially when and after it rains and also temperature changes with heat and cold.

it will be fine in cold winters, just make sure you apply it while not in a cold winter. I would apply it before cold weather starts up say like when around 70 to 80 degrees and then it would be ok. Do not wait until it is too cold then apply because it would not spread good on roof and would not cure out right.

I myself have never tried to spray it on with a paint sprayer, although the thickness of it spreads like paint and with the right nozzle, it might be done. What I wouldnt do though is to try and thin it down with anything in order to make it spray if the consistency lets say was too thick. This product goes on good with a roller of middle nap, and when put on, broom your surface off real good. This stuff sticks real good and is easy to apply this way. I covered a large area in a short amount of time with a roller and it worked real well so I will stick to putting it on in this manner, and when youre done, just throw the used roller away and start with a new roller the next day if need be. Just a note, use a roller handle with an extension on it and you can adjust your length of travel with ease and it will make it even easier.

Yes it is. Actually, the product only thickens as it dries and expands. However, that being said, I strongly suggest rolling it on with a 1" to 1 1/4" pile paint roller. The sprayer won't apply as thick as the roller would. A regular roller will not apply as thick either.
