Question

How long does it take for the freezer chest to get to 0(zero) degrees after initial setup?

Asked by
mizteesa75

December 11, 2011
I've had mine setup and plugged in for about 6 days and my chest is still not frozen! I put frozen food into my freezer chest 48 hours after setup and it seems like my food is defrosting. I've started with level 4 as instructions stated, but after 24 hours it wasn't cold enough, so we moved it level 5 & waited 24 hours, then level 6 after another 24 hours and right now we are to the max level 7! My food is defrosting instead of getting frozen! We made sure that the lid is securely closed with nothing blocking the seal. Please help!

Hello,

This is Donna with GE and I will happy to help you with your question on the GE 7.0 cu. ft. Chest Freezer model # FCM7SUWW.

The freezer should be cool by now. I would recommmend to contact warranty service to have a service technician evaluate and diagnose any issues.

Upon initial installation, or when the settings on the temperature controls are changed, it usually takes 24 hours to reach the proper temperature. If the freezer is less than two-thirds full, or the freezer is opened frequently, it may take longer than 24 hours for the temperature to stabilize.

To ensure that the freezer reaches a stable temperature within 24 hours:
Fill it 2/3 full with food, or anything else that will take up space and absorb cold (such as plastic jugs filled 2/3 with water).
Limit door openings during the 24-hour period.

The maximum amount of food your freezer is designed to freeze at one time is approximately
3 pounds (1.5 kg) per cubic foot of freezer capacity. In normal position, your freezer’s temperature
control will maintain sufficiently low temperatures in the freezer to freeze recommended quantities
of food.

Hello,

This is Donna with GE and I will be happy to help you with your question on the moving the GE chest freezer.

GE would not recommend to use a dolly. Please use the following steps when relocating an upright or chest freezer:

1. Disconnect the power cord from the wall receptacle.
2. Remove the food, defrost and clean the freezer.
3. Use blankets to protect the freezer finish from scratches.
4. Place the freezer on its side for moving only if you have no other choice.
5. When transporting a freezer, keep it in an upright position. If transporting it in an upright position is not possible, lay it down on the compressor side of the unit being careful to secure the door preventing it from opening.
6. When the freezer is installed in new location, and if it has been transported on its side, set it right side up and allow the freezer to sit for the same amount of time that it was on its side. Do not plug the unit into the electrical receptacle without allowing this settling time. The unit can be damaged if it is plugged in prematurely.
7. If the unit was transported in an upright position there is no waiting time required.

Should you have any additonal questions, please let us know.

Yes, but only at the regular price. They don't give you the 10% military discount if there is a sales special going on (like when I bought it during black Friday).

Check with your store first, as some store are requiring you to register first, and then you just put in your number in at checkout to get the discount. Not sure if you can use the discount online (never found an option to enter a discount code when ordering online, so recommend buying at store or via phone).

Hello Stormy,

This is Donna with GE and I will be happy to help you with your question on the GE 7.0 cu. ft. Chest Freezer model # FCM7SUWW.

There are many factors that contribute to the volume of food that your freezer will hold including the physical size and shape of each item. In general, a freezer will hold 30 to 35 pounds per Cubic Foot.

The maximum amount of food that your freezer can freeze at one time is 3 pounds per Cubic Foot. After allowing 24 hours for that to freeze, you can then add another 3 pounds per Cubic Foot.

I hope this helps.

answer 2
Asked by
MisterMatt
December 20, 2011
Short answer? Approx. 375 pounds.
Long answer? It depends. (see below for details)
-----------------------------------------
8 pounds of ground beef will occupy (approx.) 1 gallon of volume***
7 cu-ft = 52 gallons (approx.)
52 x 8 = 416 pounds (packed to the top)

But let us assume that you have packing material taking up some of this space, so let's reduce by 10%.
That comes out to around 375 pounds.

Unprocessed meat, like a whole turkey, will naturally take up more volume (read: weigh less) than something like ground beef. So your results may vary depending on what you're packing into your freezer.

*** I found this number on some website, but cannot verify its accuracy. Although it sounds about right if I were to make an educated guess...

Hello,
This is Alison from GE.

The power cord on model number FCM7SUWW is equipped with a 3-prong (grounding) plug which mates with a standard 3-prong (grounding) wall outlet to minimize the possibility of electric shock hazard from this appliance.
Have the wall outlet and circuit checked by a qualified electrician to make sure the outlet is properly grounded.
If the outlet is a standard 2-prong wall outlet, it is your personal responsibility and obligation to have it replaced with a properly grounded 3-prong wall outlet.
The freezer should always be plugged into its own individual electrical outlet.

I hope this information is helpful.

Please let me know if you have any further questions or concerns.

I just received my freezer and noticed it has a 6 inch square hole in the back where the electrical comes out. Shouldn't this be covered by a plate of some kind? I am concerned about dust getting on the compressor or bugs.

When the compressor kicks in I her a small click, then there is a rhythmic swoosh sound as it cycles. These sounds can only be heard within approximately 10-feet of the unit. If you are next to the unit, and you hear nothing, there may be a problem.

Mine is very quiet, I only hear a "click" when the motor comes on. I set mine to 5, and although it didn't feel that cold when I stuck my hand in, it keeps everything frozen solid.
Try putting some water in a plastic container and see if it freezes, it probably will have a layer of ice on it in an hour or 2.

You will hear a slight hum when the compressor is running. It will take several hours to get cool the first time.

Ours is VERY quiet, and took about 8 hours to actually feel cold. After about 24 hours, it was down to -10 degrees. It works great. Just be patient, it does take a while to feel frozen inside. Definitely recommend buying a thermometer to put inside.

Ours was pretty quiet when we first plugged it in, I thought ours was not working either. The delivery men said it took about 24 hours to get to the correct temp. Hopefully yours is working properly :)

It is best to let a freezer sit unplugged for a few days after being transported to let the refrigerant and the oil settle. Then when you do plug it in, put in a few gallon jugs of water so the thermostat can regulate the temperature properly. Give it another day and a half and you should be fully operational. I'm not a professional, just personal experience.
