No, you do not need the old remote. The instructions have a chart of openers, and you simply click the desired button on this new remote the listed number of times for it to work with you existing opener. No old remote needed.

Hello ag, I’m Newf from the Home Depot’s how-to Community. Thank you for your question.
You do not need the old remote in order to use the Clicker.
The Clicker can be programmed in 2 ways, depending on how old, (or what model), of door opener you have. Either you will set the DIP switches on the clicker to match the settings on the head unit, or you will press a “learn” button found on newer head units to program the Clicker.
Complete instructions are included with the new remote.
