Why does Char-Broil call this a oil-less fryer, when all this does is broil the turkey or other meats?

Because it uses infrared heat to cook the meat causing it to cook much like frying does (without the fat). The moisture is sealed inside the cut of meat unlike many other cooking methods that dry out the meat when trying to cook a large cut all the way through. If you are cooking a turkey or other poultry it comes out much like a deep fried bird. The benefits of not using oil are numerous - cost (most fryers require up to ten gallons) disposal, safety, and health benefits...

I think it is better than roasting in oven because it was cooked all the way around the chicken..It was a home grown fatty chicken which I cooked and it removed about 2 cups of fat but the meat was still moist and I am not a big fan of dry breast meat on chickens and turkeys.

I've fried quite a few turkeys and the turkeyc that come out of this "fryer" is essentially the same as the oil-fried turkeys minus the oil. The meat is juicy just like the oil-fried turkey. There is a difference in taste of course but the difference is slight IMO.

Because the drippings from the meat go into a separate container, away from the meat, to keep the meat from sitting in the drippings, in which you can use for gravy.

It does more than broil. The infrared heat penetrates the meat and fries and sears the outside keeping the interior hot and juicy. Turkey tastes like fried turkey without the oil taste.

It's true that this is more of a broiler than a fryer. However, the high heat cooking gives the skin a crispness that is typical of fryers. I suppose you could more aptly name it by the cooking style, but the name does indicate the taste and texture that this product yields.

I've not tried to cook with stuffing but in general, most professional cooks recommend cooking turkey stuffing separate from the turkey as there is always the danger of under cooking the stuffing and getting food poisoning. I've found that with this fryer, the inside of the turkey does not cook as fast as the outside unless I use the "beer chicken device" inside of the turkey then the turkey will cook evenly.

I think it depends on what you are cooking. Since it's namesake is concerning turkey, I'll assume that is what you are speaking of. If you brine the turkey in an iced down brine, I would plan on a good 10 minutes per pound. If you are starting at a room temp bird, it is closer to 7-8 minutes per pound (according to a friend of mine, since I brine my birds every time).

Foxy Lady,
A general guideline for cook time is 8-10 minutes per pound for turkey or chiken. Roasts and most other larger cuts of meat will take slightly longer. Cook times will vary depending on the outdoor weather conditions. With The Big Easy®, food is done once it reaches proper internal temperature. You will want to measure the internal temperature with the included meat thermometer (for larger cuts) or an instant-read food thermometer (for smaller cuts). You will also want to make sure that your meat selections are fully thawed before cooking.

answer 5
Don't think of it as a fryer, think of it as a roaster or cooker.

No cooking liquid at all. There's an outer shell and an inside metal bucket, which the basket goes in. There is a circular burner undearneath the inside bucket, so the bucket gets heated from the bottom and all the way up the sides. Heat radiates off the metal bucket into the food, which is essentially what infra-red cooking is. Cooks up super juicy and tender, and the skin is deliciously crispy.

Michael,

The Big Easy Oil-less Infrared Turkey Fryer does not use any type of liquid. The secret is infrared heat. The cooking chamber is heated and allows infrared heat to circle the cooker to penetrate your meat evenly from all sides. This seals in juices and results in a bird that is moist inside and crispy outside. All of this with out the risk, hassle, or added calories of oil. No.. there is a hole at bottom of insert for grease to drip through.. but we have a turkey fryer with the propane burner stand and pot and it is excellent for lobsters cause that set up the water boils fast and you can control it.. This would not work.. the flame is contained in the bottom of the outer pot and you put an insert in and the heat goes up the sides and all around the turkey or chicken.. You can probably find a lot of the old oil turkey cookers cheap.. the heat source is great for lobsters.. yummmmmmmmmmmmmm. cooks fast.

jj9,

With model 10101480, a standard 20 lb. tank should last approximately 27.5 hours. The Big Easy Infrared Oil-less Turkey Fryer cooks a turkey, up to 16 lb, in about 8-10 minutes a pound. For a 16 lb. turkey that would be a cook time of around 2- 3 hours. This would allow you to cook around 9 turkeys on one tank. Please remember these are just approximate numbers, and that the actual usage time of your tank and number of items you can prepare will vary and may be less than outlined above. Performance can be affected by a number of factors including outside temperature and weather conditions. To ensure your turkeys are safe to eat please follow the USDA guidelines for internal temperatures.

Don't use foil. Paint it with olive oil and cover with granular seasoning before cooking. Hang the roast in the cooking basket (centered) using steel or wooden skewers that are as long as the diameter of the cooking cylinder. Put the thermometer in the part of the meat where you want it "most done."

Dear Dr. I would not wrap the roast in foil. It would stick and you would have a mess on your hands. Just place the roast in the basket and cook it to the correct temp.

12 pounds is 90 - 120 minutes. 16 pounds is 180 - 240 minutes. Anything about 12 pounds significantly increases the cook time.

It took about 10 to 15 minutes per pound. You need to take into consideration things like wind or cold temperatures. Just like outside grilling, these conditions will tend to cool the internal heat.

A general guideline for cook time is 10 minutes per pound for turkey – which will vary depending on the outdoor weather conditions. With The Big Easy®, food is done once it reaches proper internal temperature. You will want to measure the internal temperature with the included meat thermometer (for larger cuts) or an instant-read food thermometer (for smaller cuts). You will also want to make sure that your meat selections are fully thawed before cooking.

16 pounds is max, but I recommend no more than 12 pounds. It cooks alot faster with a 12 pounder. A 16 pounder took almost as long as an oven would. A 12 pounder was done in 90 minutes.

Char Broil recommends a16 lbs. Some people on line thought a 12 pounds cooked up the best. I cooked a 3 pound chicken. You really need to place it breast up otherwise it will char the wing tips.

Having used both, I prefer the taste of the oil-less. It has a fried bird consistancy and flavor without all of the grease.

I thought the taste was the same. I put a wire thermometer into the breast so I did not have to remove the turkey to take the temp reading. If you do not have a wired thermometer, it is so easy to remove the turkey, check the temp and replace the bird.

Tastes great and healthier too. With its 100% Infrared heat circling the cooker and evenly penetrating your meats The Big Easy seals in the natural juices. This will give you a turkey that is moist on the inside and crispy on the outside without the risk, hassle or added fat and calories of oil. The great part is with the aluminum drip pans you can collect your drippings to make delicious homeade gravy. You also have the option to use dry rubs and seasonings on the outside of the turkey. Neither of which is an option with traditional oil fryers.
