Hello chuck and thank you for your question.

Yes, the Coolaroo Shade Cloth would be a great choice for curtains. The polyethylene-weave knitted fabric blocks 90% of harmful UV rays while allowing air circulation.

The high tech fabric is color fast and will not rot, mildew, or mold. It can maintain flexibility and strength even when exposed to the sun for long periods of time; it will stand up to the heat and will not shrink. The fabric comes with a 10 year warranty against UV degradation and manufacturer's defects.

The manufacturer recommends using one of the accessories for attaching the curtain to your patio for best results (butterfly clips, tie wraps, or lacing word with needle).

Best wishes with your project.

Rather than use fabric and the work to create curtains, why not purchase the roller shade version? In terms of looking good and doing the job, the roller shade version, which comes in various widths, is very professional looking. I have installed both the roller shades and the fabric. The roller shades look much better, important when you want a professional look.

The fabric should work for curtains, but an outdoor patio would be subject to wind, and the curtains would need to be secured in anything more than light breezes. The roller shades come with a bottom bar that has clips for attaching to holding points, helping control the fabric in a moderate breeze.

This shade cloth comes in two styles; rolled fabric in 6' widths (just the fabric, no fastenings), and on a roller with various widths and 6' drop, with a bottom bar. If you purchase the roller version, the ends need to be attached to a frame. If you purchase the fabric in a roll, you need to create a frame and a means of attachment. I used white 3/4" irrigation tubes/pipes for the frame, and purchased the lashing string and needle from the fabric firm. The lashing string and needle worked nicely. The fabric firm also sell grommets, and at least one other method. I recommend the lashing since the fabric reacts best in the wind when it is closely lashed.

The Cooleroo fabric should hold up well in the Arizona sun, probably better than a tarp, because it has lots of air space to move air through, and a lighter color. I have had the Cooleroo roller shades for several years in Sun City West, and they show no wear yet. I have the fabric on a frame over a lattice roof. It works, but wind is a problem. The fabric is light weight so it will need some way for fastening.

Can this fabric be used to screen in a porch? I'd like to staple-gun it to wood battens (1"x2") and then screw the battens to the wooden porch posts. Would this fabric allow enough visibility and would it be "okay" to attach it in this way? (Already visited the Coolaroo DIY website ... no help there.) Home Depot guys? TIA.

This fabric can be used to screen in a porch; but, if you have more than zephyr breezes, the fabric would move with the wind and perhaps come loose from the battens, and just be a distraction. I would suggest purchasing the Cooleroo roller shades that can be rolled up when not in use, or during windy days. I have both products on the sunny side of my home. Wind is a factor. The fabric lets in light and has visibility, but you can't 'take pictures' through it.

Is it possible to cut the coolaroo fabric to size? I need 8 ft widths by at least 6 ft lengths for my porch. Each section will be mounted in between porch pillars, and I will need info on how to mount it securely onto the wooden frame. We would like to be able to roll it up for winter instead or complpetely remove it, if at all possible. We live in NJ. If you would recommend a different coolaroo product, please advise! Thank you!

The shade cloth is an open weave, so the thread or ties just loop through any hole in the weave. By going one row in from the edge for thread, and maybe two rows for ties, there is plenty of 'hold' in the fabric to avoid tearing out. The thread and ties are for fastening to a frame. If one intends to just have corner fastenings with clips, I would advise doubling over the corner for the clip holding. I have only used the fabric with a frame. That works very well.
