Hello 68datroad. I’m Newf from the Home Depot’s How-To Community.
The GE Symphony transfer switch system is somewhat more complex than the Generac home systems.
Both low voltage and line voltage connections are required. The wiring and conduit is not included.
Professional installation is highly recommended.
For more information, please follow these links:

September 10, 2011
The 7 kw unit does come with a battery charger, it is built in and works off the 230 volt circuit run from the transfer panel to the generator, this 230 volt circuit will also supply power for the cold weather kit, which consists of a battery warmer and oil heater that are thermostatically controlled for cold weather running. This kit is purchased separately and should be installed on any unit that will be installed in a cold weather climate. These heaters will extend the life of the B&S Engine and improve the battery performance in cold weather, Unlike an automobile when started idles fast and oil has a chance to lubricate the engine before being run at high speeds.(or high rpm's). When the generator starts it comes up to full speed or (rpm's) right away and the load is instant there for the oil should be warmed in cold weather to provide sufficient lubrication on cold starts, and the battery warmer will provide better cranking power in cold weather if kept warm.

Hi Smiity, I’m BlakeTheDiyGuy from Home Depot’s How –to community. A standby generator is a great step to prepare your home for everything from natural disasters to summer power outages. Which generator you purchase depends on your electrical demands. A 7KW generator like this one will provide a maximum of 29.16 Amps at 240V. This is not enough to power most home A/C units. If you are looking for a unit that can power an A/C and some home appliances, lights, and tools you would be better served in the 20 KW and higher units.

The only way to know your demand for sure is to add up the wattage from all the things you plan to use.

(Estimate for example)

Air Conditioner = 9600 Watts
Oil furnace = 1500 Watts
10 75 Watt lights = 750 Watts
Refrigerator = 1200 Watts
Power tool = 1200 Watts
Kitchen appliance (dishwasher, toaster, microwave) = 1200 Watts

Total demand = 15.4 KW

Once you add up all the things you want to use you can get a very real estimate of your requirements. Electric appliances are the biggest users, if you have an electric water heater, range, or dryer don’t forget to add them in.

I hope this helps you make a decision Smiity.

It depends on the size of the air conditioner. if it is a central air conditioner you would be better off with a 10 kw with load shedding capabilities. check your needs out with a qualified electrical contractor.

Hello Hoppie and thank you for your question.

Even though you are off the electrical grid, you will need to have either a natural gas or liquid propane fuel source for operation of the generator. I spoke with Briggs & Stratton, who make the engine for the GE 7,000-Watt Home Standby Generator. They confirmed that this generator is not intended to be used as a main (primary) power source. In this instance, the generator would not be warranted.

Depending upon usage in the event of a power failure, the unit can be operated for an extended time (for up to a week) but would then need to be shut down. You may want to speak directly to the Customer Support team at 1-888-575-8226 and have your question escalated to a Product Specialist for more information about your unique situation.

Best wishes on your project.

Hey there Harry! I’m Blake from Home Depot’s online community. This is a great question, and one that most people wouldn’t even think of! I was able to confirm that the output current of this unit is digitally regulated and should be very computer friendly. That being said, I would at least plug computer equipment into a decent quality surge protector. If constant power to very sensitive equipment is necessary you may want to consider plugging the computers into a UPS (or uninterruptable power supply) battery backup unit which would be able to cover any momentary gaps in power coverage from your generator switching on.

I hope this helps Harry, thanks for the great question!

The unit comes with a 50 amp transfer switch which has nothing to do with the output of the generator. The 7kw generator produces 29 amps at 240 volts so it has a 30 amp main breaker. You should use the kw rating of the generator when choosing the size generator they need. Hope this helps.
