Hello,
The Seed Starter Mat does not contain seeds. You will need to purchase seeds separately. Once you lay the seeds you can put the mat over them. The Seed Starter Mat will help keep the seeds in place and hold the moisture to help the seeds grow.

Hello,
Seeding in July can be challenging because of the high temperatures the seedling will be exposed too. The best time to seed is the Fall when the soil and air are at their ideal temperatures. A seed mat will help keep the area moist but you may need to water as much as twice a day for the first couple of weeks.

It's primarily for erosion control so the seed does not wash out in rain events. That said, it works no matter what as long as you water it. I scratched the dirt with a rake first and a tiller where needed to loosen the soil, then fertilized, spread a healthy layer of seed and raked it in and then rolled out this mat and wetted it down...the key is to wet it down and do this in the evening as it sticks to the surface and will remain moist longer through the night than at mid day. I then seeded the top of the mat and watered every evening for a week and let Mother Nature take over here in Maryland. In three weeks, it's a lush carpet of Kentucky blue with very little remnant of the mat to be seen.

The white backing should not be removed. The Pennington Netless Grass Seed Starter Mat is biodegradable. Roll the mat out and staple it into position. Keep it well watered and watch the grass grow!

Hi Prof100,

I'm Travis from The Home Depot. Thanks for visiting our site.

The netting on the Seed Starter Mat is necessary to hold the mat together and in place, where you put it.

It should not be removed, as it is designed to break down slowly, over time. The mat could wash away if the netting is removed.

Thank you for asking,

-Travis

Hello,
The Pennington Grass Seed Starter Mat provides several benefits. It is especially useful when seeding sloped areas as the mat keeps the seeds in place. It also keeps moisture where the seeds need it most. The mat itself will work in any combination of sun and shade areas. The specific blend of grass seed you select to use will determine how well the grass will grow. We would recommend a product such as the Pennington Smart Seed Sun and Shade Mix (SKU# 383-089).

Hello,
I would recommend you wait until the grass is 1/3 taller than the recommended mowing height. When you mow for the first time you should avoid cutting more than 1/3 of the total grass blade length to keep the grass thick and healthy.

Stakes are not included with the Seed Starter Mat. Normally the mat will be able to hold itself in place, even on hills or slopes. You could use stakes if you would prefer or if your slope is especially steep.

Hello,
The Seed Starter Mat helps hold seed in place. This is especially helpful when you are seeding a slope. Frequent watering is critical with new seed. Without the mat the seeds could wash away as you water. Normally seeds will germinate within 14 days.

You are in Arizona !!! Does grass grow there ? ;-) The whole basic idea behind this product is to be able to keep the ground moist while holding seed in place. You must water it twice a day for atleast 3 weeks. Don't mow until grass is atleast 3-4 inches. Seed well before putting mat down.
I even over seeded on top of it abit.
You will like it !!

Greetings knicksfan,

My name is Tom, also known as HD116 at Home Depot's How to Community. I am here today answering a few product questions. I saw yours and realized it had gone unanswered for quite some time.

The netless seed mats are designed for use on slopes and difficult terrain to establish seed. They absorb moisture which is critical in germination and establishing new growth. The excess moisture combined with the density of the fabric may actually cause problems with the existing grass in terms of lack of sunlight and danger of fungus forming. The fact that the seed would not be in contact with the soil to allow for the roots to establish due to the existing grass is also a factor.

All things considered, I cannot recommend this product on established grass. Thank you for your question and I hope that helps.

Hello,
We wouldn't recommend using the Pennington Netless Grass Seed Starter Mat over established grass. The seeds in the mat need to be in contact with the ground to help the seeds germinate and establish roots. You can use the Pennington 1Step Complete products to overseed an area that already has established grass.

I cut the mat to the size of a bare spot. I would not use it on established grass because the mat just raises up. It didn't kill the grass, but it did not grow through as new seed did.

Not sure why you would feel the need to use this product on established grass. I would not recommend using it on established grass as the mat will not effectively hold the seed to the surface as it is intended.
