Hello Alex!

Most water-based primer is thick and hard to spray using small-port HVLP equipment.

Some HVLP guns can accommodate thicker products, but most do not.

You can thin water-based primer or paint using one cup of water per gallon of paint.

In my experience, properly thinned primer is still very thick and may splatter, rather than spray.

Hello! It is recommended not to use regular paint and primer in a HVLP gun without first thinning it. Be aware of any warranty nullification that may happen by using a latex primer like KILZ 2 in your gun and use it at your own risk. Hello Ernie, Depending on the condition of your walls after priming, you may also have to "skim coat" walls, or fill in imperfections by hand with a smoother. If your walls are in good condition, you just need to wait until the primer is completely dry...24-36 hours.

Typically, an oil-base primer like KILZ® Original is recommended for priming over wallpaper, preparing (or "sizing") a surface for wallpaper or priming after wallpaper removal. If you prefer working with a water-base primer, we recommend you use our new technology water-base primer KILZ MAX™. Using an oil-base to stop the reaction of the glue (which can cause bubbling/crackling effect) from the wallpaper and the latex paint is the traditional approach. We've had success with MAX™ performing over adhesive residue which is what causes the bubbling/crackling effect some people see. We have good data that shows MAX™ works for this type of project. We recommend trying MAX™ over a small test area.

Hello Ernie!

After removing wallpaper, you will want to use an oil based primer. The reason for this is because, inevitably, there will be some glue that remains on the wall, even if you can't feel it. Latex based primer will reactivate the glue, causing your paint to bubble and peel. Oil based primer will seal the glue. No worries though, you can paint latex based paint on top of the oil based primer. :)

Hello, Primers should not be used as a top coat. We recommend that you apply a topcoat after you use a primer. The purpose of a primer is to give a good base for the top coat. If a primer is left on the surface without a topcoat it can yellow and chalk over time. Also, if a primer is not re-coated after a few weeks, you might experience issues such as poor adhesion and peeling when you decide to repaint. If you are looking for a ceiling primer + paint with stainblocking properties, we have a product specifically formulated for ceiling applications. KILZ® CEILING PAINT is a low odor, zero VOC primer and topcoat that has stainblocking technology. It blocks out most common ceiling stains and rolls on easily with minimal spattering. It is available in store at your local Home Depot store. Question

Will this cover grafitti that appears to have been done with a black felt marker, and then bled through a layer of paint?

I live in a rental property, and previous tenants had done some graffiti on the wall. The landlord claims to have "tried everything" but it really just looks like one layer of paint over it, and it's come though. As this is my daughter's nursery, I really would like to cover it up.

For graffiti, we recommend you use our KILZ® Premium or KILZ® Complete primer. Before priming, we recommend you remove loose paint on the surface with a scraper, sand the surface so it is even and clean surface with TSP or a household cleaner. If you have additional questions, please contact us directly at ask@kilz.com. Thanks!
