All the lubricants for your machine can be purchased at your local Ariens servicing dealer. To find a list of local dealers, click here.
In many cases, the lubricants are the equivalent of lubricants used in automobile applications and are available through other retail outlets that sell automotive products.
Four-Cycle Engine Oil
Ariens recommends the use of a high-quality automotive 5W30 motor oil in the four-cycle engine of your Ariens Sno-Thro or Sno-Tek machine. Refer to the engine manufacturer's manual for oil fill capacity; the capacity will almost always be less than one quart. (To get more information about the engine on your snow thrower, click here for links to the engine manufacturer's websites.)
Ariens part number 00067600 - Ariens 5W30 Engine Oil, 32-oz. (1 Quart) Container - is an excellent choice for all Sno-Thro and Sno-Tek engines.
Two-Cycle Engine Oil
Some Ariens single stage snow throwers have a Tecumseh two-cycle engine that requires mixing oil with the gas. The model numbers of these machines are 938001-938019, 938117, 938300-938307, and 938400. Ariens recommends using a high quality, 2-cycle oil mixed with fuel at a ratio of 50:1. (2 1/2 oz. of oil for 1 gallon of gasoline.) For more information on Tecumseh engines, click here to go to Tecumseh's website.
Auger Gear Case Lubricant
Over the years, Ariens has used several lubricants in auger gear cases including grease and gear oil. Modern auger gear cases on Sno-Thro and Sno-Tek models use synthetic gear oil. It is always best to check the owner's manual for a specific model to make sure the correct lubricant is being used. Here are some rules of thumb:
If your walk-behind snow thrower was built after 2008, Ariens recommends using Ariens part number 00068800 L3 Lube. This is a synthetic gear oil and is available from any Ariens servicing dealer.
If your walk-behind snow thrower was built before 2008 and has gear oil (not grease) in the auger gear case, then Ariens also recommends the new synthetic gear oil part number 00068800 L3 Lube as the best choice. L2 Lube (Ariens part number 00008000) is also acceptable for these gearcases. A non-synthetic gear oil (often used in automotive gearcases) in NOT acceptable for these gear cases.
Older auger gear cases that have grease, or a product called Liquid Grease, must be refilled with grease rather than oil. For grease filled gear cases (mostly from the 1960's and 1970's), use Ariens part number 00006000. For auger gear cases that use Liquid Grease (some Sno-Thro's built in the 1980's and early 1990's) use Ariens part number 00007200.
Your local Ariens servicing dealer can advise which lubricant to use. For a list of local dealers, click here.
Generally speaking, the lubricant in an auger gear case does not need to be changed or serviced unless the gear case is being rebuilt or there is evidence that the gear case is leaking. A tiny amount of lubricant may be be pushed out of the gear case seals from expansion during hot summer months. This is normal and does not indicate a leak that needs to be repaired.
IMPORTANT: See your owners manual for detailed instructions on checking the level and adding gear case lubricant to your machine.
