Hello Page,

This is Donna with GE and I will be happy to help you h your question on the GE 30 in. Self-Cleaning Freestanding Electric Range model # JB640SRSS.

This is a beautiful range.

Cast Iron cookware is not recommended by GE. If the cookware has a burr or rough spot, it will scratch the glass surface. Additionally, it is slow to absorb heat. Once this type of cookware heats up, especially on high heat, it holds an intense amount of heat which is transferred to the cooktop. This can cause the element to shut down as a response to the temperature limiters which indicate surface temperature is too high for cooktop components to handle.

If you choose to use cast iron, please use caution.

Should you have additional questions, please let us know.

Hello Grammy,

Thank you for contacting us and for your interest in GE electric ranges. I am happy to help.

The only odor I can think of other than spills that burn would be the "new" smell from the binder.

Odors and a small amount of smoke emitting from a new oven is normal. Often the odor will be described as a "burning" or "oily" smell that is more intense when the oven is turned on. This condition is more likely to be noticed when using a new range that has the Self Clean feature as opposed to a model that has a standard oven. A blanket of fiberglass insulation is used around the oven cavity of GE ranges. An acrylic binder is used to hold the fiberglass insulation blanket together while it is handled during assembly of the range. This binder will decompose at elevated temperatures, resulting in the emission of odor and fumes the first few times the oven is used. If you can ventilate the room by opening windows or have a high performance range hood, we recommend running the self-clean cycle for a minimum of 3 hours. The 3 hour self-clean help dissipate the odor and smoke.

Please let us know if you have any further questions.

Regards,
Nikki from GE

Hello Lucky,

This is Donna with GE and I will be happy to help you with your question on the GE 30 in. Self-Cleaning Freestanding Electric Range model # JB640DRWW.

Yes, this model does have a Hidden Bake element. Preheat time varies according to oven type. If the oven is installed at its proper voltage (120 volts for gas and 240 volts for electric):
Electric Ovens with Hidden Bake Elements and Gas Ovens can take 15-20 minutes to preheat

Factors that will affect the preheat time are:
* Selected temperature
* Starting temperature of the oven
* Room temperature
* 208 volt installation will increase pre-heat time by 25%

I hope this helps.

Hello Carol,

This is Donna with GE and I will be hhappy to help you with your quetions on the GE 30 in. Self-Cleaning Freestanding Electric Range in Stainless Steel Model # JB640SR.

When broiling food items (including chicken) in an electric conventional oven or range, the normal practice is to leave the door slightly ajar. This allows the air temperature in the kitchen to force the broil element to stay on, rather than cycling off and on.

The doors on the ovens and ranges have an automatic catch/stop, which allows the door to stand slightly ajar when broiling.

Some wall ovens now offer optional closed door broiling.

I hope this is helpful. Should you have any further questions, please contat us again.

Hi, Petaluma. This is Cindy from GE and I'll be happy to help you. Cast Iron cookware is not recommended.

Porcelain Coated Cast Iron cookware is okay as long as the cookware is covered completely with porcelain enamel. Additionally, if used at high heat for a long period it will hold heat as described for plain cast iron and could shut down in response to the temperature limiters.

So basically, if you want to use cast iron, then use porcelain-coated cast iron and don't use a high heat setting. Personally, I use porcelain-coated cast iron and never raise the temperature above medium-high (more often I use medium or medium-low). Thanks for your question!

Hello,

This is Donna from GE and I will ebe happy to help you with your question on the GE Freestanding electric range model JB640SRSS.

Yes, the bake element is concealed under a porcelain-enameled (false) oven floor. This oven floor is easy to clean- no bake element to clean around. Bake element is not front serviceable. To service the bake unit on freestanding models with hidden bake unit will require service. Because nothing can spill over on the element, it helps exztend the life.

GE radiant free standing ranges have a recessed glass top with a silicone seal around the edge which provides spill-proof capability of up to 2.5 quarts. The corners are rounded for easy clean up of spills. Hard to clean cracks and crevices are eliminated.

The radiant top is easy to clean because the burners are underneath. Because the pan does not make contact to the burners this will increases the life.

I hoppe this helps. Thank you for considering GE!

Hello Cheeto,
This is Sheree from GE and I will be glad to answer your questions on the model JB640MRBS. The clean steel and clean steel appearance are one in the same. New in 2003, CleanSteelTM is a laminate vinyl with the look of stainless, but without the fingerprints. Magnets stick to CleanSteel.
To clean, wipe with a clean cloth lightly dampened with kitchen appliance wax or mild liquid dish detergent. Dry and polish with a clean, soft cloth.

CleanSteel blends beautifully with other full stainless appliances in the kitchen setting.
CleanSteelTM is coated several times therefore, light scratches will not cause rusting.

Thanks for your interest in GE.

Yes, model JB640SRSS has a hidden bake element feature. The bake element is under the oven cavity floor - there is no false oven floor. This makes it easy to clean-no bake element to clean around. The life of the element is normally extended since spill overs and food will not get on the element. The element repair will require service to gain access to this area.

* A 30" Freestanding range has finsihed sides and they can be exposed if installed in an open area.
* A Slide-in range is more custom looking as it can be installed without a backsplash. The sides are not finished and the range needs to be installed in a cabinet.
* A Drop-In range is 30" also but does not go all the way to the floor. There is a base cabinet below.
