I didn't actually measure, but we modified the mower to handle any opening.
I drilled a couple horizontal holes in the vertical lip of the deflector, parallel to the ground. Then when I'm not mowing, a simple shock cord holds the grass deflector in the vertical position, and you don't have to worry about catching it on any doorway.
And obviously, the shock cord stays attached to the mower, not the deflector. I assume that you already know not to mow with the deflector up -- kind of hazardous to your body!
