Hi Kathy,

Thank you for your question.

I did reach out to the manufacturer on this question and here is what they had to say:
"
The multicrystalline silicon solar panel will harvest even on cloudy days, the lithium ion battery and programmed capacitive discharge system will allow enough of the harvested solar to be discharged as needed for even lighting during the 6 hrs the set is on."

Hope this helps.

Full sunlight will give you the fullest charge. Our home faces East. Our lights were displayed on the East side of the house, and they worked very well/ Cloudy days did affect the run time, but not the brightness. Southern exposure would have worked better, but we do like the product for the conveinence and power savings. Most of our neighbors don't run their decorations all night, so the 4-7 hours of normal run time works perfect.

I haven't tried my lights in the shade, but I recharge them for about 5 hrs in full sun then take them back inside for the wreath on my fireplace where I don't have an electrical outlet, it last about 3 days without re-charging and by the 4th day, I'm re-charging them again by the south window.
If they don't work for you on your shaded area, just take them back to Home Depot.
