It sounds like you might have old fuel in your mower. It is recommended that at the end of every season you empty out the old gas and start the next season with fresh gas. Gas deteriorates over time and performs best when used within 30 days. This would also be a good time to change your oil and check your spark plug and air filter. If performing these activities does not resolve your problem, please contact your local servicing retailer.

Blowing Smoke

Asked by

about 22 in. High Wheel Variable Speed Self-Propelled Gas Lawn Mower on
May 15, 2012
I just purchased this mower 11 days ago. The third time I used it blue smoke started blowing out and the mower started to stall. I had forgotten that it was front propelled and had been using it like my old push mower. I stopped the mower and checked the oil, it was good, I engaged the front wheel drive and the blue smoke stopped and ran normally. Does the front wheel drive have to be engaged to prevent this in the future or do I have a defective mower that I should return before the 30 days is up?

You do not need to use the self-propel unless you want to. It would be difficult to diagnose the smoke issue without looking at the mower. If the problem returns we would recommend seeing an authorized servicing retailer. You can locate your nearest servicing retailer at https://homeownersolutions.toro.com/portal/server.pt/community/dealer_locator/226.

If you prefer the blade stop feature, we would suggest that you look at the Toro 22” Personal Pace with Blade Stop System Self-Propelled Mower. The Blade Stop System conveniently stops the blade, but not the engine, so you can step away to pick up an item in the way or empty the grass bag. Comes standard with Personal Pace® self-propel, Bag on Demand, washout port for easy cleaning, 3 year Guaranteed-to-Start warranty and 2 year Full Coverage Warranty.

In 3 months it has never taken more than one wimpy pull to start it. Yeah, it stops when you let go of the handle. Yeah, it is one of those laws that's a pain. I don't like laws that keep me from being stupid. I like to try to do that myself.

You simply have to pull up the handle bar (sits over the base on the box) and hand screw two very easy nuts onto the appropriate bolts in place. It comes with oil to fill into the yellow OIL fill spot, add gas and an easy pull on the handle and whammo you're off and cutting

There really is no assembly required. All you do is attach the handle, and no tools are required, then put in the oil and gas. The whole process takes all of about 2 minutes. Took me longer to get it out of the box, than get it set and ready to go. If they try to charge you for assembly at the store, pass on that. A friend or neighbor would be able to help you for free, I hope. But honestly, if you cannot do this yourself, you probably shouldn't be using the mower at all.

I would contact Home Depot and advise them of the problem. My experience with HD has been that they are very good about this kind of thing and usually go out of their way to make it right. My guess is that they will tell you to re-pack it and then they will arrange for UPS to pick it up from your house.

You can get a repacement drive belt from a number of lawnmower parts places online. The cost is about 12$US. Alternatively, you may not need a new belt. If the the self-propelled drive seems weak or sluggish you may just need to adjust the tension on the drive cable.
