Question

SHOULD these fit any 48" fixture?

Asked by
Bob60506
Aurora, IL
about 4 ft. T12 60-Watt Cool White (4100K) High Output Linear Fluorescent Light Bulb (15-Pack) on
January 10, 2014
The product specifications state:

Approximate Lightbulb Length 48
Assembled Depth (in.) 46.81 in

I had to return a box of these bulbs because they were only 45" long -- about 45 1/2" including the pins. They were well short of making contact at the ends of my 48" fixtures.

The case I received had obviously been returned by someone else; the ends of the box were sloppily taped closed and one of the bulbs was missing its pin protectors. It was not apparent how to make these 45" bulbs fit a 48" fixture, there were no instructions in the box to explain it, and no one at the Customer Service desk could explain it, either. Unfortunately, I had to ask for a refund.

If you can explain how to make these bulbs work in a 48" fixture -- or let me know what fixture I need to get, I'm still interested in getting them. I'd really like these bulbs for their high light output.

Hello and thank you for your question. This lamp is not a typical 4' lamp as it is a HO lamp and is intended for use in a high output fixture. The nominal length is 4', based on ANSI. The actual length is 45.72"-46.91", as specified by ANSI. If you have a fixture that was designed around the HO lamp, then it should fit without an issue. If the fixture was originally intended for a standard 4' lamp and modified by changing the sockets, there could problems with fitting it properly.

I have 6 dual-tube fixtures in the basement of the house we recently moved into - all now with 4' 40w T12 bulbs. Can I use these 60w bulbs in place of the existing 40w bulbs? The existing ballasts will handle the
increased wattage?

Hi Mike, unfortunately each bulb must be used in a ballast that is compatible with its wattage, as ballasts are not meant to use bulbs with higher wattage.

Thank you for asking. To determine pricing and availability you will need to localize the item online by using a zip code. Unfortunately, if you are unable to see the store inventory, then it’s most likely not a stocked item in your area. However, you can still order it online to ship to your home or business. For any other questions, please call us at HomeDepot.com Customer Service 800-430-3376.
1. Localize Homedepot.com using your zip code (My Store Location: Change)
