Crabgrass is a grassy weed commonly found throughout most of the United States. The two most common species are Hairy Crabgrass and Smooth Crabgrass. Both species sprawl crab-like across desirable lawn grasses forming flat clumps. As the weed grows, it branches out at the base and can root wherever the nodes touch the soil. Crabgrass is considered a weed because of its short period of greenness, its coarse appearance and the unsightly texture patterns it gives to lawns. The pale green blades are 2 - 5 inches long and 1/3-inch wide.
Crabgrass is an annual grass. The seeds will germinate in the spring and grow vigorously in hot weather. With the fall frost the crabgrass will turn purplish, then brown and die. The most effective way to control crabgrass is to create a dense, healthy turf. Feed to create as dense a lawn as possible. A healthy turf will compete well with crabgrass and prevent it from establishing. Mow at 1" to 2".
There are two types of herbicides used in the control of Crabgrass - a pre-emergent (applied in the spring) that will prevent the seeds from germinating and must be applied before the plant emerges, or a post-emergent that will kill the existing crabgrass plants once they have appeared in the lawn.

I'm having trouble coming to the conclusion when to use this product. I live in Cincinnati, Ohio. It says apply in Fall/Winter...I assume that this product should be used right before winter sets in. So, am I right to assume that the weed control will become relevant after the winter is over and spring comes around?

No, this product is not labeled for control of crabgrass. The good news is in cooler areas where this product is typically used during the fall, crabgrass will be killed by frost. The best way to control crabgrass is using by using a pre-emergent in early spring before crabgrass seeds become to germinate.

Scotts Turf Builder Winterguard Fall Weed & Feed does not kill crabgrass. Crabgrass starts growing from seed in early spring and then "explodes" with growth in warm weather, becoming very noticeable in early summer. Crabgrass will die off after the first frost in the fall. Here are some tips that will help to keep crabgrass out of your lawn: Regular feedings, 2-4 times per year, provide the nutrients your lawn needs to grow thick and strong and help crowd out weeds. Mowing at a height best for your lawn allows the grass to grow thicker and develop a deep root system. Grass clippings recycle plant nutrients back into the soil. Finally, take advantage of nature's sprinkler and rely on the rain to water your lawn. If using sprinklers, water lawns deeply and infrequently (one inch of water per week is all that your lawn needs).

No this product will help control broadleaf weeds and does not control grassy weeds. For control of crabgrass in most lawns, we suggest using a pre-emergent crabgrass control like Scotts Halts Crabgrass and Grassy Weed Preventer, in early spring before crabgrass seeds germinate.

No, we do not recommend using Scotts Turf Builder Winteguard with Plus 2 Weed Control on newly seeded lawns. If you apply the product first, do not seed for 4 weeks. If you seed first, do not apply the product until the new grass has been mowed at least 4 times. You can use Scotts Turf Builder Winterguard or a better option is Scotts Turf Builder Starter Food For New Grass.

Question

What is the chemical content of the Scotts Winter Guard Plus 2 at Home Depot?

Asked by
Russ1

September 16, 2013
I was disappointed to see the Scotts Winter Guard Plus 2 at one of your major competitors is now 28-0-3. In the past, I thought the Winter Guard Plus 2 products were 26-2-12 and in my opinion that is a better product for stimulating root growth for fall and winter feeding.

In addition, the product I use in the spring - Scotts Turf Builder Plus 2 at your major competitor (28-0-4 )is about $10.00 less a bag than the inferior their inferior Winter Guard Plus 2. In other words, a consumer would be silly to purchase their Winter Guard Plus 2 product...because they could save some money and buy Turf Builder Plus 2 instead. Hopefully, Home Depot still has the superior Scotts Winter Guard Plus 2 with the more ideal chemical content of something close to the old 26-2-12.

Please let me know if Home Depot still has the better 26-2-12 Scotts Winter Guard Plus 2 or something close to it in your stores...

.if for policy purposes, can't answer this on your website...please just send me an email with the answer.

NPK ratios and the amount of the active ingredients in a fertilizer change from season to season as research and manufacturing indicates is necessary.

We offer different products to different retailers to meet all of consumer's needs. Though Turf Builder Plus 2 can be used in the early fall, Turf Builder WinterGuard with Plus 2 Weed Control is more ideal because of the higher amount of potassium this provides, which is recommended for fall feeding. No matter which product you decide to use, you will get the same great results that you expect from a Scotts fertilizer.
